| |  | DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON has emerged as the closest thing to a No. 1 option on this team, and despite his size, he's proven capable of playing full-time minutes. He'll continue to post big numbers in an up-tempo system that suits him perfectly . . . ANDRE MILLER will both back up Lawson and share the court with him at times (though Andre Iguodala figures to play a lot of two this season). The steady veteran is one of the league's most underrated sixth men . . . It's a bit surprising that EVAN FOURNIER is making the jump to the NBA this year. His size and skill combo will be nice on the wing one day, but he's unlikely to contribute this year . . . JULYAN STONE will be out until January after offseason hip surgery, but he should be Lawson's main backup upon his return. FORWARDS: DANILO GALLINARI is their most complete offensive player. If healthy, he's capable of being a 20-PPG scorer . . . ANDRE IGUODALA should enjoy the much faster pace Denver plays at. He'll see full-time minutes between both wing spots . . . KENNETH FARIED isn't a skilled big, but he's a high-energy guy who can get his own points off offensive rebounds . . . WILSON CHANDLER could end up leading their second unit in minutes and points . . . COREY BREWER is a front office favorite. He'll stay in the rotation as a defensive presence/glue guy . . . JORDAN HAMILTON could break into the rotation. He's one-dimensional, but has the offensive skills . . . Denver will try to solve the ANTHONY RANDOLPH riddle. Don't expect it to happen this year. CENTERS: Denver is all-in on internet punchline JaVALE McGEE. They'll give the athletic 7-footer every chance to become the star they think he can be. Whether the flaky McGee can capitalize is questionable . . . TIMOFEY MOZGOV is one of the NBA's best screeners, but his touches will be limited . . . KOSTA KOUFOS has quietly developed into a usable rotation player, but he might be squeezed out of minutes. | | BROOKLYN: GUARDS: DERON WILLIAMS is healthy and got a much-improved supporting cast to work with. He could re-enter the NBA's best point guard discussion . . . JOE JOHNSON won't have the ballin his hands as much as he used to in Atlanta. It might give him a chance to concentrate on regaining his stroke as one of the NBA's best shooters . . . MARSHON BROOKS will look to settle in as a high-scoring sixth man. He'll be trade bait for most of the season . . . After a disastrous year in Chicago, C.J. WATSON will be asked to spell Williams for a few minutes a night . . . KEITH BOGANS is still kicking around as a second unit glue guy . . . TYSHAWN TAYLOR is an at-times out-of-control combo guard, but the rookie could threaten Watson's role at some point. FORWARDS: KRIS HUMPHRIES' contract was structured to make him easier to trade. He'll rebound and get his put-backs, and the Nets will likely showcase him a bit . . . GERALD WALLACE is slowing down, and now that he's signed his last big NBA contract he might not have much incentive to live up to his 'Crash' nickname. Brooklyn has no choice but to give him heavy minutes considering their investment . . . MIRZA TELETOVIC is a veteran stretch four. Consider him a penniless man's Channing Frye . . . TORNIKE SHENGELIA played himself into a roster spot this summer. He's a mediocre athlete, but a cagey scorer with a high basketball IQ . . . JOSH CHILDRESS and JERRY STACKHOUSE were added in September for depth . . . REGGIE EVANS will flop unconvincingly, punch opponents in the jewels and bring other 'tough guy' intangibles. CENTERS: BROOK LOPEZ had been remarkably durable before last year's foot injury, and he should be fully healed by the start of training camp. He's gifted offensively, but will continue to grab relatively few rebounds and generally get fried defensively. He's also a candidate to be traded midseason if another franchise can stomach his max contract . . . As insurance, former Wizards big man ANDRAY BLATCHE was brought in. He could be the team's best interior defender, able to play either the four or five spot. |

The Brooklyn Nets used a team effort and some production from an unexpected source to survive their first of at least two games without Deron Williams.
They've had a difficult time with the Denver Nuggets in recent years no matter who is in uniform.
Brooklyn looks to avoid a ninth loss in the last 11 meetings Wednesday night when it hosts Denver, which hopes some key contributors will return from injury.
Williams sat out Monday's 89-84 overtime win at Indiana with inflammation in his ankles, and he'll also miss at least this contest while using the upcoming All-Star break to recover.
If his teammates play like they did Monday, the Nets (30-22) could be heading into the break on a positive note.
Brook Lopez scored 25 points, Reggie Evans grabbed 22 rebounds and rookie Tyshawn Taylor scored a season-high 12 points off the bench.
"It was great. It was a complete team game from top to bottom," Lopez said.
Joe Johnson added 17 points for Brooklyn, which had dropped three of its previous four and is averaging only 86.1 points and shooting 41.4 percent over its last seven.
"We wanted to come out tonight and make a statement," Johnson said. "We were just being very resilient. Guys were coming up big and making plays."
Taylor, whose scoreline has often read "DNP-Coach's Decision," made his case to get more playing time after playing the entire fourth quarter and overtime coming off the bench behind C.J. Watson. He played over 34 minutes after not playing more than 20 in any previous game.
"I'm happy for him," Johnson said. "A guy who comes in and works hard and gets an opportunity to play, and not only play, but play in a clutch and crucial situation, he was big for us tonight."
Taylor, a second-round draft pick who was acquired from Portland on draft night, also has spent time in the Developmental League.
"I'm confident in my game, so when coach puts me out there I just want to be aggressive," Taylor said, "It started getting down to crunch time and coach kept me in there, it just boosted my confidence."
The Nuggets will be looking to regain theirs after falling 109-108 at Toronto on Tuesday - their second straight loss after nine consecutive wins. They played, though, without Danilo Gallinari (sinus infection), Andre Iguodala (strained neck) and reserve Wilson Chandler (groin).
JaVale McGee also didn't play in the second half because of a sore left leg.
It's unclear if any of the four will be in uniform Wednesday.
Ty Lawson scored a game-high 29 points while Corey Brewer and rookie Evan Fournier combined for 15 replacing Gallinari and Iguodala, who are averaging 17.2 and 13.4 points, respectively.
"That's tough," Lawson said. "We didn't know until (earlier Tuesday) so we couldn't really plan for it."
Rudy Gay hit a jumper with less than five seconds remaining to hand another tough loss to Denver, which fell 118-114 in triple overtime Sunday.
"This one is even harder for me than Boston," coach George Karl said.
Denver, which will be concluding a four-game road trip, is averaging 113.4 points over its last 12. The Nuggets have averaged 112.2 points while winning five of the last six meetings with the Nets.
