KEY GAME INFORMATION
HOUSTON: LAST SEASON: 53-29, lost 4-2 to Golden State in Western Conference semifinals.
COACH: Mike D'Antoni (fourth season with Rockets, 173-73; 16th season overall, 628-499).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Russell Westbrook (22.9 ppg with Oklahoma City), G James Harden (36.1), F Eric Gordon (16.2), F P.J. Tucker (7.3), C Clint Capela (12.0).
KEY LOSSES: G Chris Paul, G Iman Shumpert, C Kenneth Faried
KEY ADDITIONS: Westbrook, C Tyson Chandler, F Thabo Sefolosha, F Ryan Anderson, F Ben McLemore.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: All eyes will be on Westbrook and Harden as the Rockets try to prove that these two ball-dominant guards can coexist after Houston sent Paul to Oklahoma City in exchange for Westbrook. Harden and Westbrook are longtime friends and played together in Oklahoma City at the beginning of Harden's career when he was the sixth man for the Thunder and insist that things will work out because they want them to. But things have changed a lot since their Oklahoma City days and it will be interesting to see how Westbrook will adjust to playing a supporting role to Harden after being the face of the Thunder for years.
OUTLOOK: The addition of Westbrook to this team starring Harden gives the Rockets two of the league's most dynamic scorers and playmakers a year after Houston lost to Golden State in the Western Conference semifinals. If the pairing of is successful it could help the Rockets become an offensive juggernaut in the stacked Western Conference. While Harden and Westbrook will drive Houston's success, players like Eric Gordon and center Clint Capela will have to continue to improve if the Rockets hope to finally get over the hump and compete for their first title since winning back-to-back championships in 1994-95.
BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 49-33
COACH: Brad Stevens (seventh season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Kemba Walker (25.6 ppg), G Gordon Hayward (11.5), F Jaylen Brown. (13.0), F Jayson Tatum (15.7), C Enes Kanter (13.7)
KEY LOSSES: G Kyrie Irving, F/C Al Horford, F Marcus Morris, G Terry Rozier.
KEY ADDITIONS: Walker, Kanter, G Romeo Langford, F Grant Williams, G Carsen Edwards.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: It starts with Walker, who jumped at the chance in free agency to join a perennial playoff team. Following Kyrie Irving's departure to Brooklyn, it will also give Walker the opportunity to do what Irving couldn't: lead the Celtics to an NBA Finals. He'll need help, though. And that will again put the spotlight on youngsters Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Both took small steps backward last season as infighting and chemistry issues plagued the team. Now, both will have key roles, much like they did two seasons ago when Irving missed the playoffs and they helped get the team to the Eastern Conference finals. It's an especially big year for Brown. The Celtics have until Oct. 21 to decide whether to extend his contract for another season or let him become a restricted free agent next summer.
OUTLOOK: The Celtics are going to have to tweak their style of play a little without Irving or Horford. Irving was their chief scorer and Horford played a huge role facilitating offense in the half court as well as on defense. Kanter is a big man that can run, which should fit in nicely with the up-tempo style this athletic roster is built for. Whether this team is ultimately able to be a threat to win the East will depend on how well Walker leads and if the starting unit gets enough support from its youthful group of reserves.
PREVIEW
Hot Rockets to test Celtics' home prowess

The Boston Celtics face a tall task in trying to extend their home winning streak to eight games as they host the red-hot Houston Rockets on Saturday night.

The Celtics return from a 3-1 road trip that ended Wednesday with a 114-103 victory over the Utah Jazz. Boston is 23-5 at home this season, its last loss at TD Garden coming Jan. 18.

The Rockets, meanwhile, have won five straight and scored north of 120 points in each of their last four. Houston is 17-12 on the road this season.

The teams met in Houston on Feb. 11 with the Rockets pulling away in the third quarter on their way to a 116-105 victory. James Harden had 42 points, and Russell Westbrook scored 36 with 10 rebounds. Gordon Hayward paced the Celtics with 20.

Jayson Tatum had just 15 points in that game, his only outing where he scored less than 20 in his last 15 games. Tatum has taken his offensive game to the next level of late, highlighted by three straight games shooting over 60 percent with more than 30 points to finish Boston's West Coast swing.

"We're in a good spot," Tatum said after putting up 33 points and 11 rebounds in the win over the Jazz. "We're just trying to continue to get better every game."

Tatum's surge has come at a good time for the Celtics, who have been without fellow All-Star Kemba Walker (knee injury) since Feb. 13. The team is targeting Tuesday against the Brooklyn Nets for the guard's return.

"I think the plan of attack is for him to go harder in the morning, maybe even ramp it up Sunday and then go from there," coach Brad Stevens told reporters Friday. "So hopefully back by Tuesday, but out for tomorrow is what I've heard last."

Stevens added that big man Robert Williams III, out since early December with a hip injury, could be cleared to play Saturday.

Similar to Tatum, Westbrook has been surging for the Rockets, with 30 or more points in nine of his last 11 contests. After missing a win over the New York Knicks on Monday with a thumb injury, Westbrook returned to action with team highs of 33 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in a 140-112 blowout of the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

"The excitement that he brings to the game, I just don't know another player in the league who brings that kind of intensity and is actually skilled," said Harden, who added 30 points in just 28 minutes of Memphis.

Harden has been just as dangerous of late, surpassing 30 points in eight of his last 11 contests. His 35.2 points per game leads the league by a wide margin.

"Those guys are two of the best in the world," Stevens said after the last meeting in Houston.

The Rockets have won four straight in their season series with the Celtics.
