KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game.
BOSTON: GUARDS: RAJON RONDO's name is etched on the trading block. Regardless of where he lands, his injured knee should be 100 percent healthy . . . With an improved three-point shot, AVERY BRADLEY has become a complete player. His defense guarantees minutes regardless . . . MARCUS SMART seems to be waiting in the wings for a Rondo trade. In the meantime, he'll back up both guard spots. Just like in college, he'll be brilliant at times, but inconsistent . . . Local product PHIL PRESSEY will stick around as a No. 3 point guard . . . EVAN TURNER was a disaster in Indy. He'll have a tough time making this rotation . . . MARCUS THORNTON was acquired as a trade throw-in. The Celtics don't have big plans for the remorseless gunner. FORWARDS: He's isn't a legitimate No. 1 option, but JEFF GREEN will be the go-to guy again. He hasn't been able to handle the extra defensive attention, becoming increasingly inefficient . . . He has plenty of limitations on both ends of the court, but JARED SULLINGER is a crafty scorer. He'll get close to starter minutes as the Celtics search for offense . . . BRANDON BASS will see time at the 4 and the 5. He's made a pledge to improve offensively, but more likely he'll be a defensive presence and a screen-setter . . . JAMES YOUNG missed most of the summer healing a neck injury. He's going to do some damage running the floor, but he doesn't have the skills for the half-court game in the NBA . . . GERALD WALLACE is playing out the string. CENTERS: KELLY OLYNYK has the most upside in this frontcourt. His rare mobility and skill set for a 7-footer made a difference last year. It's just a question of whether he can hold up defensively down low . . . TYLER ZELLER gives them another solid 7-footer who opposing defenses have to account for. He'll fit well in head coach Brad Stevens' system . . . JOEL ANTHONY isn't going to get off the bench.

*Hornets-Celtics Preview* =========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Charlotte (23-32) at Boston (22-33), 7:30 p.m. EDT

Coach Brad Stevens is still learning how to use the array of new players on the Boston Celtics.

Mo Williams is fitting in just fine with the Charlotte Hornets.

The Celtics look to extend their longest home winning streak of the season Friday night against Williams and the Hornets.

Boston (22-33) has undergone an overhaul over the past three months and is starting to see some results with six wins in nine games. The Celtics turned in one of their best performance over that span Wednesday, routing New York 115-94 for their fourth straight home win.

Their top three scorers were all recent acquisitions, with Isaiah Thomas scoring 19 and Jonas Jerebko getting 20 in their first home games with Boston. Jae Crowder - acquired from Dallas in the Rajon Rondo deal on Dec. 18 - finished with 18 points.

"We're just throwing darts," Stevens said. "Like (Wednesday) - we found a lineup that nobody would ever thought would play together right in an NBA game.

"We've got a long way to go still but the vibe is good. The desire to share the ball is very good and the aggressiveness has been unquestioned for me for a few weeks now."

Thomas has provided a big spark in three games off the bench for Stevens' team, averaging 20.3 points on 56.4 percent shooting and 5.7 assists.

"We've got a lot of talented guys," Thomas said. "Coach's offensive system is freedom for everybody and he wants everybody to have confidence and attack."

Thomas has scored 18.5 per game over his last four against Charlotte, including 23 in a win for Phoenix on Dec. 17.

The Celtics' improved play has them tied with Detroit and Indiana, one game behind Charlotte (23-32) and Brooklyn in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Wiliams has quickly made an impact for the Hornets, averaging 21.0 points in three games since being acquired in a trade with Minnesota earlier this month.

The veteran guard was one of five Hornets in double digits Wednesday, scoring 17 points in a 98-86 win at Chicago to end their five-game slide.

"We've got a good group of guys," Williams said. "The coaching staff has been great, and my teammates have been great. I enjoy playing with these guys, and they enjoy playing with me. I can tell winning is a priority, and that makes things more significant and fun."

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had a team-high 18 points and 12 rebounds against the Bulls. He's averaging 17.7 on 56.4 percent shooting and 7.3 boards in three games after missing two with a hamstring injury.

Charlotte is 3-13 without Kidd-Gilchrist this season and 20-19 when he plays.

The Hornets will attempt to win three straight against the Celtics in a single season for the first time since 2000-01.

Al Jefferson had 23 points and 14 rebounds in a 97-86 victory at home on Dec. 10, and Kemba Walker, now injured, scored 33 in a 104-95 win at Boston on Jan. 5.
