|
| | | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: JRUE HOLIDAY is perfect for head coach Monty Williams. He defends and can create in the half-court set . . . ERIC GORDON didn't want New Orleans to match his deal two offseasons ago, and he spent last year letting everyone know it. If healthy and motivated (two big 'ifs') he's a 20-point scorer . . . TYREKE EVANS will get some starts at the three and come off the bench at times. Either way, he is the kind of aggressive (if sometimes out-of- control) offensive threat this lineup needs . . . Even after an injury-filled season, ANTHONY MORROW's shooting could earn him a rotation spot . . . AUSTIN RIVERS was overmatched last season, to the point where he didn't seem to belong in the NBA. It's tough to see the win-now Pels relying on him often. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS was overwhelmed by Williams' complex defensive schemes, and opponents consistently took him out of plays with screen-and-rolls at him. Williams will surely use some of his new talent to allow Davis to roam more on defense . . . RYAN ANDERSON's defensive shortcomings could lead to a drop in playing time, but his shooting and the spacing it creates is too valuable to this offense . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU will likely split time with Tyreke Evans at the three. He's more valuable defensively, and is starting to show some signs of improvement on offense . . . DARIUS MILLER has a shot to break into the rotation if his defense improves . . . LANCE THOMAS is a long athlete who is capable of playing some good defensive minutes . . . ARINZE ONUAKU most likely won't see the floor for more than a minute at a time. CENTERS: JASON SMITH might be their most complete defensive big man, and that should be enough to earn him solid minutes . . . GREG STIEMSMA is more off a warm body, but he at least gives them another rim-protecting option . . . JEFF WITHEY will spend most of the season on the bench learning Williams' complex schemes. | | BOSTON: GUARDS: RAJON RONDO is the last man standing in Boston. Coming off a torn ACL and with a weakened supporting cast, it's going to be a long year . . . AVERY BRADLEY is the favorite to start alongside Rondo. He's still lost on offense, but his defense will be much needed . . . COURTNEY LEE continues to tease with flashes of talent, but hasn't shown consistency and is no longer 'young' . . . JORDAN CRAWFORD will hoist a lot of shots . . . MARSHON BROOKS fell out of favor in Brooklyn and is just hanging on to an NBA roster spot . . . KEITH BOGANS is in Boston because a new deal made the numbers work on the Nets trade . . . Local product PHIL PRESSEY, an undersized point guard, will try to stick as a back-up. FORWARDS: Suddenly, JEFF GREEN is Boston's first option on offense. He showed an ability to score with 20.1 PPG over 17 starts last season, but he'll be in for a whole new world of attention as the only legitimate scorer on this team . . . BRANDON BASS should continue to hold down the power forward spot, and he'll get to take more shots with the team rebuilding . . . Durability is a major issue for JARED SULLINGER, but he has a chance to play big minutes for a team in need of his offensive skill set . . . A washed-up vet with arguably the worst contract in the NBA, GERALD WALLACE is of little use to the Celtics (or any other team) . . . KRIS HUMPHRIES is also dead weight, but is a more enticing trade chip due to an expiring contract. CENTERS: Rookie KELLY OLYNYK is going to get pushed around, but he has some rare shooting and ball-handling skills for a 7-footer. Boston has little to lose by letting him learn on the job . . . VITOR FAVERANI is a tough-nosed Euro import who gives them insurance behind Olynyk. |

*Pelicans-Celtics Preview* ==========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
New Orleans (14-16) at Boston (13-19), 7:30 p.m. EDT
The New Orleans Pelicans are struggling to carry their home success onto the road.
The venue hasn't made much of a difference to the Boston Celtics' latest problems.
The Pelicans go for just their second road win in eight tries Friday night, when they attempt to get another victory over the sputtering Celtics.
New Orleans (14-16) has won eight of 11 at home, including four in a row. However, the Pelicans have lost six of seven on the road and fell 124-112 at Minnesota to open this four-game trip Wednesday.
"At home, we do a great job of talking, doing everything that we're supposed to do," forward Anthony Davis said. "We gotta bring that same energy, that same effort on the road. Make sure that we talk.
"The biggest thing is communication."
Facing Boston (13-19) could also help.
New Orleans has won five of its past six meetings with the Celtics, including back-to-back visits to TD Garden.
Davis had 10 points and 10 rebounds in a 90-78 win in the most recent matchup there Jan. 16. He had nine points and six boards at home March 20, but came up big with the decisive basket on a tip-in with 0.3 seconds left in an 87-86 victory.
He's looking to bounce back from his own rough performance from Wednesday after being held to 13 points and six rebounds. Davis had been averaging 21.3 points and 11.2 boards over the previous six games after sitting out seven with a broken hand.
Tyreke Evans has averaged 18.7 points in three career games against the Celtics, but missed four others through injuries. He enters this match averaging 19.5 points and 7.3 assists in six games.
While the Pelicans are trying to improve on the road, the Celtics have lost five of six overall while shooting 29.4 percent from beyond the arc.
They were far worse than that Thursday, missing 10 of 12 attempts from long range while making just 16 of 23 free throws in a 94-82 loss at Chicago.
Still, first-year coach Brad Stevens found a bright side.
"I am very encouraged and the reason why is we played very physical," he said. "We missed some chippies, but those things don't really weigh on me.
"I think this is the best we have played in the last seven games."
The Celtics, though, will have another obstacle to overcome Friday in addition to the Pelicans. They're traveling the day of the game due to the weather conditions in Chicago.
"We just have to be ready to play," forward Jeff Green said. "That's the way it is with a back to back. We just have to make sure we get our rest."
Jordan Crawford was a rare offensive bright spot against the Bulls, scoring 22 points while adding seven assists. That was a major improvement after the guard had eight points while going 3 for 15 from the field - 1 for 7 from 3-point range - in a 92-91 home loss to Atlanta two days earlier.
Crawford was limited to four points at New Orleans on March 20.
