| |  | ATLANTA: GUARDS: GM Danny Ferry has really talked up JEFF TEAGUE, who will be more of a traditional point guard with Joe Johnson gone . . . DEVIN HARRIS is going to play plenty of minutes, both alongside Teague and off the bench . . . LOU WILLIAMS is a sixth man. He lacks the mentality to run the point and the size to guard opposing twos. His role will be similar to what it was in Philly . . . KYLE KORVER and ANTHONY MORROW are pure shooters who do little else. They can play the three in a pinch, and the hot hand will get the minutes . . . Coach Larry Drew could call on DeSHAWN STEVENSON for the occasional defense-heavy lineup. More likely, he'll rack up the DNP-CDs . . . JOHN JENKINS might be the best shooter in the rookie class, but he'll be buried on the depth chart. FORWARDS: JOSH SMITH rescinded his trade demand, perhaps because he'll now be the focal point of the offense. He was more aggressive on both ends of the floor last year. As long as he resists the urge to float on the perimeter, he should emerge as an All-Star . . . Considering the makeup of this roster, Atlanta will utilize a lot of three-guard lineups. Korver and Morrow can stretch a defense from that third guard/small forward spot, with Stevenson stepping in as an agitator . . . After scoring double-figures six times in April, IVAN JOHNSON was re-signed to once again provide some muscle inside . . . Rookie MIKE SCOTT is polished after five years at Virginia, but doesn't have the athleticism to be an impact player . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER is a defensive specialist with very little offense to contribute. CENTERS: AL HORFORD will get his wish to play more power forward this season, though he'll remain their primary option at center. He's healthy again and is one of the most consistent bigs in the NBA . . . ZAZA PACHULIA filled in admirably for Horford last year. But it's back to bench duty for the bruising big . . . JOHAN PETRO is French for "12th man." | | BOSTON: GUARDS: This offense now belongs to RAJON RONDO, and that should be especially true during the regular season . . . Even if he comes off the bench, JASON TERRY figures to see the bulk of the minutes at shooting guard. He provides some much-needed outside shooting after Ray Allen left and should challenge Paul Pierce for the team lead in shot attempts . . . Adding COURTNEY LEE was more of a move for the future. He's a fine young second-unit player for now and should be an heir apparent on one of the wings . . . AVERY BRADLEY could be out until December after shoulder surgery. As Boston's best perimeter defensive player, he could reclaim his starting job in the season's second half . . . The addition of LEANDRO BARBOSA gives Boston another veteran who can create his own offense in the second unit, something that was sorely missing in last year's playoff run. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE quietly had a great regular season last year. Though with some improved depth behind him, Rivers might have his 35-year-old All-Star wing rest more often . . . BRANDON BASS gives them another scoring option, even if he does struggle on the defensive end. He'll get full-time minutes only in certain matchups as long as the frontcourt is healthy . . . JEFF GREEN's heart condition is no longer a concern, but the tweener's role in Boston after a year off is cause for worry . . . There are already question marks surrounding rookie JARED SULLINGER's back. He's very similar to Bass: He can score out to mid-range but doesn't play much defense. Expect him to be strictly a second-unit player in his first NBA season . . . CHRIS WILCOX will provide fouls off the bench when healthy. CENTERS: The Celtics are prepared to go with KEVIN GARNETT in the middle, which was the case when they were at their best last season. His role on offense is still knocking down mid-range jumpers, and he's still an elite defensive player . . . Professional flopper JASON COLLINS will fill in nicely for the departed Greg Stiemsma . . . FAB MELO is years away from being ready to contribute (if he actually is ever ready to contribute) and DARKO MILICIC was also added via free agency for more frontcourt depth. |

Atlanta (34-26) at Boston (33-27), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The last time the Boston Celtics faced the Atlanta Hawks, they lost All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo for the remainder of the season and were on their longest skid in nearly six years.
Many began to question whether the Celtics should just pack it in the rest of the way and deal Paul Pierce or Kevin Garnett before the trade deadline, but they decided to stay the course - and the results have been almost hard to believe.
Coming off a remarkable comeback against one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference, Boston looks to improve to 14-4 since Rondo went down and win nine in a row at home for the first time since the end of the 2008-09 season when it meets the Hawks on Friday night.
Rondo tore his ACL in a 123-111 double-overtime loss in Atlanta on Jan. 25, Boston's sixth straight defeat as it blew a 27-point lead. The Celtics didn't know the severity of the injury until two days later during a home game against Miami, which they won 100-98 in double OT.
Following that victory, coach Doc Rivers said the team was down but would not give up.
"You can write the obituary," Rivers told reporters. "I'm not. You can go ahead, but I'm not. We won and so the way I look at it is we're going to stay in there."
Boston (33-27) has done more than just hang around. It led Philadelphia by 2 1/2 games for the eighth and final playoff berth in the East after beating the Heat, and it enters this matchup in seventh place with a 2 1/2-game advantage over eighth-place Milwaukee.
The Celtics were five games behind Brooklyn for fourth place but have pulled within 1 1/2 of the Nets for that spot. They trail the fifth-place Hawks (34-26) by one game.
Boston rallied from nine points down in the final 4:36 of Wednesday night's visit to Indiana, scoring the game's last 11 points to come away with an 83-81 win after Garnett found Jeff Green under the basket for a layup with 0.5 seconds remaining.
"We have found ways to win. The trust is there now," Green said after the Celtics' fourth straight victory. "Guys are giving what Doc wants. We are finding a way."
Boston found a way to win all three games at home in eliminating Atlanta in six games in the first round of last season's playoffs. Including the postseason, the Celtics have won 14 of 16 on their own court against the Hawks.
Road-weary Atlanta avoided a season high-tying fourth straight defeat Wednesday night with a 107-96 home win over the 76ers. The Hawks returned to Atlanta after splitting a six-game trip, and they're in the midst of playing 10 of 14 on the road.
Jeff Teague led the way against Philadelphia with 27 points and 11 assists, Al Horford added 21 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, and journeyman forward Anthony Tolliver came off the bench to score a season-high 21 points.
Tolliver went 7 of 10 from the field and hit 5 of 7 3-point attempts while also grabbing a season-best eight rebounds and blocking two shots.
"The starters played a lot of minutes on the road," said Tolliver, who came in averaging 3.4 points. "We knew that coming off the bench, we had to bring a lot of energy and help these starters get the win."
Boston won 89-81 in Atlanta in the first meeting this season Jan. 5. Rondo had a triple-double and Pierce chipped in with 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
