KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO: GUARDS: The best guess on DERRICK ROSE is a February return. But an ACL injury usually isn't 100 percent until the second full year back . . . With Rose out, KIRK HINRICH figures to play heavy minutes early. He's a defensive specialist who will pass and watch on offense . . . NATE ROBINSON could push Hinrich for minutes. He's the offensive half of that platoon, but Thibodeau almost always leans defense . . . RICHARD HAMILTON will carry a bigger offensive load while Rose is recovering. He's a shadow of his former self . . . MARCO BELINELLI is a nice addition. He's solid defensively, and he brings the long-range shooting Chicago lacks. Don't be surprised if he pushes Hamilton . . . Rookie MARQUIS TEAGUE will mostly sit and watch this year. FORWARDS: After avoiding wrist surgery, LUOL DENG should be Chicago's top scorer while Rose is out. He's the only one on this team who even has a chance to generate his own offense . . . CARLOS BOOZER continues to be a major disappointment. In the past it's been his atrocious defense, but now he's taken a step back offensively as well. He may score more with Rose out, but he'll continue to sit late in close games . . . TAJ GIBSON should be in for a bigger role. With Omer Asik gone, he's one of only two defensively capable bigs on this roster . . . VLADIMIR RADMANOVIC will try to replace some of the three-point shooting they lost when Kyle Korver left . . . JIMMY BUTLER has a puncher's chance at a rotation spot after a good summer. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH was still working his way back from that badly sprained ankle this summer. His durability is questionable, but the Bulls will have to lean on Noah for more minutes now that Omer Asik is gone . . . NAZR MOHAMMED steps into Asik's role as Noah's backup. But while Asik was an active defender, Mohammed is more of just a big body with six fouls to give.
BOSTON: GUARDS: This offense now belongs to RAJON RONDO, and that should be especially true during the regular season . . . Even if he comes off the bench, JASON TERRY figures to see the bulk of the minutes at shooting guard. He provides some much-needed outside shooting after Ray Allen left and should challenge Paul Pierce for the team lead in shot attempts . . . Adding COURTNEY LEE was more of a move for the future. He's a fine young second-unit player for now and should be an heir apparent on one of the wings . . . AVERY BRADLEY could be out until December after shoulder surgery. As Boston's best perimeter defensive player, he could reclaim his starting job in the season's second half . . . The addition of LEANDRO BARBOSA gives Boston another veteran who can create his own offense in the second unit, something that was sorely missing in last year's playoff run. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE quietly had a great regular season last year. Though with some improved depth behind him, Rivers might have his 35-year-old All-Star wing rest more often . . . BRANDON BASS gives them another scoring option, even if he does struggle on the defensive end. He'll get full-time minutes only in certain matchups as long as the frontcourt is healthy . . . JEFF GREEN's heart condition is no longer a concern, but the tweener's role in Boston after a year off is cause for worry . . . There are already question marks surrounding rookie JARED SULLINGER's back. He's very similar to Bass: He can score out to mid-range but doesn't play much defense. Expect him to be strictly a second-unit player in his first NBA season . . . CHRIS WILCOX will provide fouls off the bench when healthy. CENTERS: The Celtics are prepared to go with KEVIN GARNETT in the middle, which was the case when they were at their best last season. His role on offense is still knocking down mid-range jumpers, and he's still an elite defensive player . . . Professional flopper JASON COLLINS will fill in nicely for the departed Greg Stiemsma . . . FAB MELO is years away from being ready to contribute (if he actually is ever ready to contribute) and DARKO MILICIC was also added via free agency for more frontcourt depth.

*Bulls-Celtics Preview* =======================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Chicago (30-21) at Boston (27-24), 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Boston Celtics were performing surprisingly well without All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo - their last game notwithstanding - but have now lost another member of their backcourt.

The Chicago Bulls are having their own problems staying healthy.

After losing a third player to a season-ending injury in less than a month, the Celtics will try to bounce back from their first defeat in more than two weeks Wednesday night against a Bulls team seeking its eighth victory in the last 10 games in the series.

Boston (27-24) had won seven in a row - its longest streak in two seasons - after losing Rondo to a torn right ACL on Jan. 27. That run ended Monday with a 94-91 road loss Charlotte, owner of the league's worst record.

Even worse, the Celtics lost Leandro Barbosa to a torn left ACL. The team announced Tuesday the backup guard, who has seen increased playing time since Rondo's injury, was done for the season.

Earlier this month, Boston lost first-round draft pick and reserve forward Jared Sullinger for the rest of 2012-13 because of lumbar disk surgery.

"We're falling like flies right now," Kevin Garnett said Monday. "Obviously, it's tough. It's tough all the way around."

If any team can relate to Boston's injury woes, it's Chicago. The Bulls (30-21) have had every starter except Richard Hamilton out of action at various times over the past 3 1/2 weeks - and Hamilton missed 12 December games with a foot sprain.

That list doesn't even include 2011 MVP Derrick Rose, who is still trying to come back from his own torn ACL. The Bulls were hopeful their point guard could be back after the All-Star break but while he didn't rule that out, Rose told USA Today in an interview posted Tuesday that he thought his return was "far away."

Making it worse on Chicago is that his replacement, Kirk Hinrich, has an ailing right elbow and has missed the past six contests. The Bulls have gone 2-4 in those games, which also includes games missed by Joakim Noah, Carlos Boozer and key reserve Marco Belinelli.

The Bulls are coming off Monday's 103-89 loss to visiting San Antonio, and they didn't help themselves by giving up 29 points off 19 turnovers. The miscues were their most since they had 21 in a 100-99 overtime win at Boston on Jan. 18, the most recent matchup between the teams.

"We didn't play smart, turned the ball over way too much," said Noah, who had 15 rebounds and seven points in his third game back from plantar fasciitis. "We're not playing good basketball right now. We're on top of each other offensively and we're not trusting each other defensively. We know we're more than capable of playing better."

Another absence from Hinrich, who isn't traveling to Boston, could make it difficult for Chicago to add to its 7-2 mark in its last nine games against the Celtics. The Bulls earned their latest win in the series when Belinelli made an off-balance fadeaway jumper with 3.1 seconds left.

Hamilton had a team-best 20 points in that one and Boozer totaled 19 points and a season-high 20 rebounds, the fourth double-double in his last five games against Boston.

While the Bulls could be short-handed again, the loss of Rondo might hurt even more for Boston as he was averaging 25.3 points in this season's three matchups, nearly twice as many as any other teammate.

The Celtics and Bulls have split their last six games at the TD Garden, but Boston has won a season-best six straight there since a loss to New York on Jan. 24.
