Hawks host Grizzlies after record-setting performance

The Atlanta Hawks are a hot team in search of their 14th victory in 18 games under interim coach Nate McMillan and will host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night.

The streak includes wins in the past four games and an NBA record-setting performance in which Atlanta was hotter than lava while making all 11 of its 3-point attempts in the third quarter of Tuesday's 123-107 triumph over the visiting New Orleans Pelicans.

McMillan didn't even realize what was occurring when the long-range shots kept slithering through the net. He was so disappointed in the team's first-half defensive effort that he had no idea that there were zero single 3-point attempts missed during the Hawks' 46-point third quarter.

"I didn't know we hit 11 3s and set a record until after the game," McMillan said. "My focus was on just getting more aggressive around the ball defensively.

"We have shooters who can knock down some shots. It was pretty obvious in the third quarter. We got open looks and we moved the ball and those are shots the guys practice every day. We preach ball movement."

Bogdan Bogdanovic, Kevin Huerter and Trae Young knocked down three apiece in the record-breaking stanza. Solomon Hill and Lou Williams each made one.

Young was impressed by the barrage that turned a tie game at the half into a 17-point Atlanta lead.

"That's coming out just playing hard, getting shots from all around, especially on the first night of a back-to-back," Young said. "Hopefully we can continue to do it. ... I am glad we got some 3s down."

Young paced the Hawks with 30 points and 12 assists while Bogdanovic scored 21 points to top 20 for the fourth time in the past five games.

Atlanta was 20 of 31 overall from behind the arc. Young made 6 of 7 attempts and Bogandovic made 5 of 8.

The Hawks were just 13 of 36 from 3-point range when they beat host Memphis 122-112 on Dec. 26. Young recorded 36 points and nine assists, while Ja Morant had 28 points and seven assists for the Grizzlies.

Memphis has won its past three games after registering a solid 124-112 road win over the Miami Heat on Tuesday.

The Grizzlies didn't set any records in their third quarter but Dillon Brooks came close while exploding for 23 of his 28 points in the stanza.

Brooks' output is the second-highest for a quarter in franchise history behind the 26 Jaren Jackson Jr. scored in the third quarter of a 127-114 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Dec. 13, 2019.

"I just get to my zone and I take on the challenge," Brooks said. "And I'm amped to play anybody in this league. Thanks to my teammates for sharing me the ball and giving me confidence."

Brooks was 8 of 11 from the field, including 4 of 5 from behind the arc, during his quarter-long splurge.

"Hell of a quarter by D.B. That was fun to watch," Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins said. "I thought his teammates got him in the right spots. He had a great aggressive mentality. Got going early in the quarter from the 3-point line and finished the quarter getting downhill with some big-time finishes."

Jonas Valanciunas added 20 points and 10 rebounds and Kyle Anderson contributed 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Morant tweaked his back during the contest and had an off-night with 10 points and four assists. He also committed seven turnovers.

Brandon Clarke (calf) and De'Anthony Melton (leg) sat out Tuesday for the Grizzlies. Atlanta's John Collins (ankle) will miss his fifth straight game while De'Andre Hunter (knee soreness) underwent a nonsurgical procedure on Monday and won't return until next week at the earliest.
