KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON: GUARDS: JOHN WALL has improved tremendously over the past two seasons. His physical skills are off the chart, and now he's significantly cut back on head-scratching mistakes . . . It appears that BRADLEY BEAL is becoming the perfect running mate for Wall in the short and the long term. He continues to develop off-the-dribble skills to go along with his shooting. His broken wrist is expected to fully heal by late November . . . ANDRE MILLER is in more of a mentor role in Washington. He's 38 and averaged less than 17 minutes per night last season . . . GLEN RICE JR. tore up Summer League, but it's unlikely the gunner will become an efficient scorer . . . GARRETT TEMPLE gives them a defense-first option off the bench, but his playing time will be minimal again. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE takes Trevor Ariza's spot at the 3. He'll have much more space to work in, not that he's ever needed it . . . The Wizards will likely play it safe with NENE HILARIO's minutes during the regular season again. They'll need him fresh for the playoffs, and they have enough frontcourt depth to do it . . . Back surgery is going to keep MARTELL WEBSTER out for a huge chunk of the season. He's a question mark even after he returns . . . After a lost rookie season, OTTO PORTER should be able to break into this rotation, especially with Webster out . . . KRIS HUMPHRIES will provide some rebounding and energy behind Nen' . . . It's incredible that DREW GOODEN is still employed. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT made beautiful pick-and-roll music with Wall last year. There's no reason that shouldn't continue. Gortat is a fringe All-Star . . . DeJUAN BLAIR can mix it up for 20 minutes per night, especially against smaller 5's.
ATLANTA: GUARDS: Considering he was almost gone a year ago, the Hawks are thankful JEFF TEAGUE is still in town. He may never be a great shooter, but he gets wherever he wants on the floor . . . KYLE KORVER is still the NBA's premier shooter, and he's shown no signs of relinquishing that title . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA gives the Hawks a defensive option to complement Korver. He looked worn down last season though, eventually falling out of OKC's rotation . . . KENT BAZEMORE gives Atlanta some more offensive firepower off the bench . . . DENNIS SCHRODER showed flashes of that Rajon Rondo Lite promise last year. Don't be surprised to see him paired with Teague in some lineups . . . There's no guarantee JOHN JENKINS will ever be the same after back surgery. FORWARDS: PAUL MILLSAP has developed into a capable co-alpha, along with Jeff Teague. In addition to his low-post work, he's developed a three-point shot and the ability to work off the dribble . . . DeMARRE CARROLL is trying to add a three-point shot to his repertoire. It would give him a big boost in offensive value to go along with his defense and all-around hustle . . . ADREIAN PAYNE will provide some much-needed depth at the 4 and 5 spots. He's NBA-ready, especially with his ability to pull opposing big men away from the basket with his shooting . . . MIKE MUSCALA gives them another big man who can shoot it, but he's not athletic enough to hold his own in the NBA. CENTERS: Will AL HORFORD ever stay healthy? He's an All-Star when he is. His recent injuries have been a bit fluky, but it's going to be tough to trust him . . . PERO ANTIC proved to be a capable stretch-5 last year, but the arrival of Payne will likely push him out of the rotation.

*Wizards-Hawks Preview* =======================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer

Washington At Atlanta, Game One, 8:00 p.m. EDT

For the second straight year, the Washington Wizards hold a 1-0 series lead over the Eastern Conference's top seed in the second round of the playoffs.

Inexperience prevented them from advancing further in 2014, but that may not be a problem this postseason.

The Wizards continue looking forward after stealing Game 1 from the Atlanta Hawks and seek their eighth road victory in nine postseason games Tuesday night.

Washington eliminated Chicago in five in last year's opening round and beat Indiana in the first game of the conference semifinals, but it dropped the next three contests before bowing out in six.

The Wizards remained unbeaten in these playoffs with Sunday's 104-98 win at Atlanta as Bradley Beal tied a playoff career high with 28 points and John Wall added 18 points and 13 assists.

"Last year we were just happy to be in the playoffs, just happy we moved on. We didn't have many goals after the first round," Beal said. "This year, we expect more from ourselves. We're really focused on what we need to continue to do to move forward."

Beal sprained his ankle but played through it, just as Wall overcame an injury to his left hand. Both said Monday that they'll play in this contest, when they're expecting the Hawks to play more like the team that set a franchise record with 60 victories.

Atlanta lost for the first time when leading heading into the fourth quarter after winning all 29 such games in the regular season and three in the playoffs. It scored more points in the first quarter (37) Sunday than it did in the entire second half (35).

The Hawks had a roughly 36-hour turnaround after beating Brooklyn in Game 6, while the Wizards were off for a week after sweeping Toronto. Atlanta shot just 37.8 percent from the floor after hitting 14 of 22 - including 5 of 8 from 3-point range - to take an 11-point lead after the first 12 minutes.

"We know that they're going to come out aggressive and give us a punch right away," Wall said. "We can trust anybody leading us in scoring. When we play team defense, we're a pretty good team."

Washington's defense was solid, but more disturbing for Atlanta was its 15-for-49 performance on uncontested shots. DeMarre Carroll scored 24 points, but Jeff Teague went 4 of 14 from the field and Kyle Korver finished 3 of 11 from 3-point range.

The Hawks alluded to the fact that they may have been worn down by the lack of rest, which only fueled Washington's up-tempo style led by Beal and Wall. Beal is averaging 22.2 points in the playoffs with Wall scoring 17.4 and adding 12.6 assists.

"Maybe we have to turn the heat up a little bit more, get a little more physical, get more aggressive on John Wall and Bradley Beal," said Carroll, who became the first Hawks player since Dominique Wilkins in 1989 to score at least 20 points in five straight postseason contests. "I think we kind of sat back and let them dictate their offense."

Al Horford had an efficient game for Atlanta, finishing with 17 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists. He and Paul Millsap helped limit Marcin Gortat to 12 points while also holding Nene scoreless.

Millsap finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists, but he also had four of the Hawks' 11 turnovers. Atlanta only forced six on the other end.

"Mistakes everywhere," Millsap said. "Against a team like this in the second round of the playoffs, you've got to be at it for 48 minutes."
