KEY GAME INFORMATION
BROOKLYN: GUARDS: Even after Paul Pierce came to Brooklyn, JOE JOHNSON remained the clear-cut No. 1 option in Brooklyn. Their offense figures to feature Johnson backing down defenders frequently again this year . . . DERON WILLIAMS seems to be deteriorating rapidly, struggling to stay healthy and losing confidence . . . JARRETT JACK figures to take Shaun Livingston's old role, playing alongside Williams often to take ball-handling duties off his plate . . . ALAN ANDERSON will see time at both wing spots as a defensive specialist who shoots some corner threes . . . SERGEY KARASEV has some long-term upside, but will do little this year . . . MARQUIS TEAGUE figures to have the edge on MARKEL BROWN for the No. 3 PG job. FORWARDS: With Paul Pierce gone, MIRZA TELETOVIC has a chance to take on a bigger role. He held his own defensively last year and provides another deep threat to space the floor . . . There's no telling what, if anything, they'll get out of ANDREI KIRILENKO this season. He seems to be at a point in his career when he's just not going to be able to stay healthy . . . BOJAN BOGDANOVIC should give Brooklyn some additional offensive firepower off the bench. He'll likely be a regular in the rotation by midseason . . . KEVIN GARNETT figures to play a bit more at the 4 alongside Brook Lopez, but there's pretty much no gas left in the tank for this 38-year-old player . . . Second-round pick CORY JEFFERSON is likely ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: The Nets desperately need a healthy BROOK LOPEZ if they're going to win the Atlantic Division, but they'll have to monitor his minutes closely after another season lost to injury . . . With Lopez healthy, MASON PLUMLEE will resume his natural role as an energy guy off the bench.
ATLANTA: GUARDS: Considering he was almost gone a year ago, the Hawks are thankful JEFF TEAGUE is still in town. He may never be a great shooter, but he gets wherever he wants on the floor . . . KYLE KORVER is still the NBA's premier shooter, and he's shown no signs of relinquishing that title . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA gives the Hawks a defensive option to complement Korver. He looked worn down last season though, eventually falling out of OKC's rotation . . . KENT BAZEMORE gives Atlanta some more offensive firepower off the bench . . . DENNIS SCHRODER showed flashes of that Rajon Rondo Lite promise last year. Don't be surprised to see him paired with Teague in some lineups . . . There's no guarantee JOHN JENKINS will ever be the same after back surgery. FORWARDS: PAUL MILLSAP has developed into a capable co-alpha, along with Jeff Teague. In addition to his low-post work, he's developed a three-point shot and the ability to work off the dribble . . . DeMARRE CARROLL is trying to add a three-point shot to his repertoire. It would give him a big boost in offensive value to go along with his defense and all-around hustle . . . ADREIAN PAYNE will provide some much-needed depth at the 4 and 5 spots. He's NBA-ready, especially with his ability to pull opposing big men away from the basket with his shooting . . . MIKE MUSCALA gives them another big man who can shoot it, but he's not athletic enough to hold his own in the NBA. CENTERS: Will AL HORFORD ever stay healthy? He's an All-Star when he is. His recent injuries have been a bit fluky, but it's going to be tough to trust him . . . PERO ANTIC proved to be a capable stretch-5 last year, but the arrival of Payne will likely push him out of the rotation.

*Nets-Hawks Preview* ====================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Brooklyn (18-26) at Atlanta (37-8), 8:00 p.m. EDT

With Al Horford and Paul Millsap producing so efficiently in the frontcourt, the Atlanta Hawks are on the cusp of the league's longest winning streak this season.

It doesn't appear the stumbling Brooklyn Nets should stand in their way despite a couple of extra days off before visiting Atlanta, which looks to extend a franchise record with its 17th straight victory Wednesday night.

The Hawks (37-8) broke the team record with a 103-93 win over Oklahoma City on Friday, then tied Golden State for the league's top win streak of the season with Sunday's 112-100 victory over Minnesota. They can match their win total from all of last season Wednesday.

"They're the best combination offensive and defensive team we've played," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said of the Eastern Conference leaders.

Millsap led the way with 20 points while going 8 for 12 from the field, and Horford added 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting in the team's 30th win in 32 games. Millsap has scored 18.5 per game and shot 56.9 percent through four games of Atlanta's seven-game homestand, while Horford has averaged 18.0 on 73.6 percent shooting over his last seven.

"I have a good rhythm right now and I'm taking open shots," Horford said. "My teammates are setting me up. It's easy."

Horford also has done a nice job setting up teammates with 5.4 assists per game in his last seven, more than double his career average. He and Millsap have helped the Hawks average 55.0 points in the paint in the last two games, well above their season mark of 41.6.

They might be able to continue that trend as they try to become the first team to win 17 straight since San Antonio's 19-game run late last season. The Nets (18-26) have been outscored 98-78 in the paint while losing their last two games by 74 points.

Brook Lopez has totaled 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting in that span, and the 2013 All-Star remains a subject of trade rumors.

Lopez had 20 points against Atlanta on Dec. 5 in this season's only meeting, though no teammate scored more than 12 as the Nets shot 37.5 percent from the field and 3 of 18 from 3-point range in a 98-75 home defeat.

DeMarre Carroll led the Hawks with 18 points, and Millsap scored 17 as Atlanta overcame Horford shooting 3 of 10 for seven points.

Carroll has made eight of 15 3-point attempts in the last three games, Kyle Korver is shooting an NBA-best 53.1 from beyond the arc and they could find a lot more open looks Wednesday. The Nets allowed a combined 24 of 54 from 3-point range in blowout losses to the Clippers and Utah in their last two games.

Brooklyn has averaged just 89.8 points and made 25.6 percent from 3-point range while dropping 10 of 12.

"It's not really a strategic thing anymore, we just need to give more," forward Mason Plumlee said.

The Nets haven't played since Saturday because their scheduled home game with Portland on Monday was postponed due to the heavy snowstorm that was expected to hit the area.

Former Atlanta swingman Joe Johnson, leading Brooklyn with 15.5 points per game, has totaled 15 in the last two games and is 3 for 14 from beyond the arc over his past five. Deron Williams might return after missing the past nine games with a rib injury.

The Nets have won the past two meetings in Atlanta by a combined 30 points after losing the previous eight.
