|
| | | LA CLIPPERS: GUARDS: Head coach Doc Rivers pretty much hands the offense over to CHRIS PAUL, who is very much in his prime. He has a chance to lead the NBA in assists and steals again . . . He was banged up during the regular season, but J.J. REDICK fit nicely next to Paul when healthy . . . JAMAL CRAWFORD will reprise his sixth-man role. He can still fill it up, though he'll lose a bit of playing time if Redick stays healthy . . . JORDAN FARMAR is still hanging around L.A., this time to back up Paul. He'll run point for the second unit . . . C.J. WILCOX is arguably the best shooter in the rookie class, but he's not guaranteed to grab a rotation spot. FORWARDS: He still has flaws in his game, but BLAKE GRIFFIN continues to evolve into a more complete player. His improved shooting, both mid-range and at the line, is a testament to that . . . The Clippers failed to land an upgrade at small forward, so MATT BARNES might be the starter by default again. He's a good glue guy, though his streaky shooting is a frustration . . . The Clippers retained GLEN DAVIS in free agency. "Big Baby" can do some damage against opposing second units during the regular season. CENTERS: Rivers made DeANDRE JORDAN into a full-time player last season. He's a rim protector and rebounder who has made some strides defending in space, but there's a reason the Clippers spent on another big man . . . SPENCER HAWES gives them a different look at the 5-spot, and he can play alongside Jordan as a floor-spacer as well. | | ATLANTA: GUARDS: Considering he was almost gone a year ago, the Hawks are thankful JEFF TEAGUE is still in town. He may never be a great shooter, but he gets wherever he wants on the floor . . . KYLE KORVER is still the NBA's premier shooter, and he's shown no signs of relinquishing that title . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA gives the Hawks a defensive option to complement Korver. He looked worn down last season though, eventually falling out of OKC's rotation . . . KENT BAZEMORE gives Atlanta some more offensive firepower off the bench . . . DENNIS SCHRODER showed flashes of that Rajon Rondo Lite promise last year. Don't be surprised to see him paired with Teague in some lineups . . . There's no guarantee JOHN JENKINS will ever be the same after back surgery. FORWARDS: PAUL MILLSAP has developed into a capable co-alpha, along with Jeff Teague. In addition to his low-post work, he's developed a three-point shot and the ability to work off the dribble . . . DeMARRE CARROLL is trying to add a three-point shot to his repertoire. It would give him a big boost in offensive value to go along with his defense and all-around hustle . . . ADREIAN PAYNE will provide some much-needed depth at the 4 and 5 spots. He's NBA-ready, especially with his ability to pull opposing big men away from the basket with his shooting . . . MIKE MUSCALA gives them another big man who can shoot it, but he's not athletic enough to hold his own in the NBA. CENTERS: Will AL HORFORD ever stay healthy? He's an All-Star when he is. His recent injuries have been a bit fluky, but it's going to be tough to trust him . . . PERO ANTIC proved to be a capable stretch-5 last year, but the arrival of Payne will likely push him out of the rotation. |

*Clippers-Hawks Preview* ========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Los Angeles (19-8) at Atlanta (19-7), 7:30 p.m. EDT
A tougher schedule and the absence of leading scorer Jeff Teague haven't posed much of a problem for the Atlanta Hawks.
Dennis Schroder is one reason why.
With Teague's status uncertain, the Hawks may turn to Schroder to run the point again as they try to sweep a five-game stretch against teams with winning records Tuesday night versus the Los Angeles Clippers.
Atlanta (20-7) is unexpectedly atop the Southeast Division after winning 13 of 14 games by an average of 12.2 points. That stretch started with a nine-game winning streak with eight coming against teams with losing records before falling 100-99 at Orlando on Dec. 13.
The Hawks followed that with impressive wins over Chicago, Cleveland, Houston and Dallas - all clubs above .500. They completed a sweep of a three-game trip with a 105-102 victory Monday over the Mavericks, leading by as many as 24 points in the third quarter.
Teague has missed the last three games with a left hamstring strain and it's unclear when he'll return. The guard's 16.8 points per game and 7.0 assists are team highs, but Schroder has chipped in with 13.3 and 7.3, respectively, in his absence.
Schroder, the 17th overall pick out of Germany in 2013, had a career-high 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting with six assists against Dallas.
"I thought Dennis was aggressive on both ends," coach Mike Budenholzer said. "He was good defensively. He made a couple big shots and found ways to get to the basket."
A return home doesn't figure to slow the Hawks, winners of seven straight there for their longest run since taking 10 in a row from Nov. 25, 2010-Jan. 8, 2011.
Atlanta has also won its last five home meetings against the Clippers (19-9), including a 107-97 victory on Dec. 4, 2013, behind Paul Millsap's 25 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three blocks.
Los Angeles has dropped four of seven games - allowing an average of 106.0 points - since wining a season-best nine straight. The Clippers are coming off their worst defensive performance of the season in Monday's 125-118 loss at San Antonio.
They not only surrendered a season high in scoring, but they gave up 63.6 percent from the floor, including 13 of 23 from 3-point range.
"They shot the lights out (of) the ball," guard Chris Paul said. "At the same time, you've got to try to impose your will on defense. (At) some point, you can't hope they miss, you have to make them miss."
Paul had a team-high 25 points in the loss, and has totaled 52 and 18 assists in the past two games. He's 7 for 12 from long distance in those contests.
He's averaging 24.0 points in his past three games in Atlanta, while Blake Griffin has scored 27.3 on 36 of 57 from the field over that stretch.
The forward has hit that same average in his last four games overall, adding 10.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists.
J.J. Redick has produced his best two-game stretch of the season, totaling 44 points on 15-of-28 shooting, including 10 of 16 from beyond the arc. However, he's averaged only 8.8 points in 25 career meetings with the Hawks. He's yet to face them as a member of the Clippers, missing both matchups last season due to injuries.
