| |  | PHOENIX: GUARDS: With Steve Nash gone, GORAN DRAGIC takes over at the point. He was a monster as a starter in Houston late last year, and he's familiar with Phoenix's system from his time there as Nash's backup . . . SHANNON BROWN is one of the league's better sixth men and could end up seeing close to starter minutes this year. Once just a raw athlete, he's made major strides as a shooter and ball-handler . . . KENDALL MARSHALL was a bit of a product of an absurdly talented supporting cast in college at UNC. He's got work to do to become an NBA-caliber starter, but he'll be capable enough as a backup point guard as a rookie . . . SEBASTIAN TELFAIR still can't hit an open jump shot, but will factor into the backcourt rotation. FORWARDS: LUIS SCOLA steps in as the starting four. While he's in his 30's and an underwhelming athlete, he's crafty and relentless . . . JARED DUDLEY will continue to be their main catch-and-shoot threat on the wing. It might take a while to develop an on-court chemistry with Dragic . . . MICHAEL BEASLEY has a chance to grab a starting spot. He rarely has his head on straight, but he can score . . . CHANNING FRYE, the sharp-shooting 7-footer, will likely miss the 2012-13 season due to an enlarged heart, but this condition is expected to completely heal . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gets a fresh start. He needs to start knocking down shots to land a rotation spot . . . MARKIEFF MORRIS showed flashes as a rookie, but has to make better decisions on the offensive end. He'll be a key on the second unit . . . Well-traveled P.J. TUCKER earned himself a roster spot with an impressive Summer League. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT had a great year-and-a-half alongside Steve Nash, and he'll have to prove he can create in the low post a little more. But he's a skilled big man who should pair nicely with Luis Scola as a scorer and passer in the post . . . Injury-riddled JERMAINE O'NEAL is still a strong low-post defender and shot-blocker. | | ATLANTA: GUARDS: GM Danny Ferry has really talked up JEFF TEAGUE, who will be more of a traditional point guard with Joe Johnson gone . . . DEVIN HARRIS is going to play plenty of minutes, both alongside Teague and off the bench . . . LOU WILLIAMS is a sixth man. He lacks the mentality to run the point and the size to guard opposing twos. His role will be similar to what it was in Philly . . . KYLE KORVER and ANTHONY MORROW are pure shooters who do little else. They can play the three in a pinch, and the hot hand will get the minutes . . . Coach Larry Drew could call on DeSHAWN STEVENSON for the occasional defense-heavy lineup. More likely, he'll rack up the DNP-CDs . . . JOHN JENKINS might be the best shooter in the rookie class, but he'll be buried on the depth chart. FORWARDS: JOSH SMITH rescinded his trade demand, perhaps because he'll now be the focal point of the offense. He was more aggressive on both ends of the floor last year. As long as he resists the urge to float on the perimeter, he should emerge as an All-Star . . . Considering the makeup of this roster, Atlanta will utilize a lot of three-guard lineups. Korver and Morrow can stretch a defense from that third guard/small forward spot, with Stevenson stepping in as an agitator . . . After scoring double-figures six times in April, IVAN JOHNSON was re-signed to once again provide some muscle inside . . . Rookie MIKE SCOTT is polished after five years at Virginia, but doesn't have the athleticism to be an impact player . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER is a defensive specialist with very little offense to contribute. CENTERS: AL HORFORD will get his wish to play more power forward this season, though he'll remain their primary option at center. He's healthy again and is one of the most consistent bigs in the NBA . . . ZAZA PACHULIA filled in admirably for Horford last year. But it's back to bench duty for the bruising big . . . JOHAN PETRO is French for "12th man." |

Injuries might complicate the Atlanta Hawks' late-season run as they compete for playoff seeding. If their last game was any indication, however, they might be able to cope better than expected.
Friday night's home game against the Phoenix Suns appears to be a good chance for Atlanta to pick up a second straight win and further distance itself from a rough stretch.
The Hawks (35-29) had lost six of seven and their struggles figured to continue with starters Josh Smith and Jeff Teague both sidelined for Wednesday's game against the surging Los Angeles Lakers. Smith (sprained left knee) and Teague (sprained ankle) were both injured in Tuesday's 17-point loss at Miami.
Atlanta, which is tied with Chicago and Boston for the Eastern Conference's fifth-best record, was also without Zaza Pachulia for a sixth straight game (sore Achilles).
Those absences left coach Larry Drew with little choice but to send out his 23rd different starting lineup of the season, but the squad found a way to a 96-92 win. The Hawks got double-digit scoring from six players, and could need a variety of contributions again Friday as Teague and Smith's statuses are uncertain.
"That's the way we have to play," Kyle Korver said. "When we're missing guys, we can't just say, 'You're the next-best guy on the team, you take all the shots.' That's a recipe for disaster."
Neither Smith nor Teague had much luck in a 92-87 loss at Phoenix on March 1. Smith was 2 of 11 for five points and Teague scored six on 3-of-10 shooting.
Korver, who had 17 points in Arizona two weeks ago, scored 15 Wednesday to extend his franchise record for consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer to 57 - also the longest streak in the NBA since Peja Stojakovic hit one in 62 straight contests from Jan. 16-Dec. 10, 2008.
The Suns' season-long struggles haven't lessened any recently, as they've lost four of five and are tied with New Orleans for the Western Conference's worst record.
Phoenix (22-43) showed little sign of life in a 111-81 loss at Houston on Wednesday, scoring only 36 in the second half. It left coach Lindsey Hunter yet again frustrated with a group that figures to have little left to play for besides auditioning for roles on next year's squad.
"That's probably the first time I felt we didn't compete as a unit and that is just unacceptable," Hunter. "It's embarrassing. These are the situations you get put in when you really find out who's going to be with you and who isn't. Nothing is promised for none of us here so our guys have to compete like every day is our last and I didn't see that tonight."
The Suns did see a positive with the return of Jermaine O'Neal, who had missed the previous four games to be with his daughter as she had successful heart surgery earlier in the week. But O'Neal, who was averaging 11.4 points on 57.0 percent shooting with 8.3 rebounds in his previous 12 games before leaving the team, had only six points and three rebounds in 23 minutes.
"I felt a little winded because I only had one practice to get in and I was trying to readjust my mind to coming back to basketball," O'Neal said.
Goran Dragic, who has totaled 19 points in his last two games, scored 19 in the first meeting with the Hawks. He was the only Phoenix starter with more than six points as the reserves scored 58.
