KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''
WASHINGTON: WASHINGTON (AP) - Thanks in part to No. 1 overall draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, the 2012 Washington Nationals were considered an up-and-coming team, perhaps a year or two away from contending.
So what did they do? Went out and led the majors with 98 wins.
Thanks to that quick rise, the 2013 Nationals became a popular pick to go to the World Series. So what did they do? Stumbled at the start and missed out on the playoffs.
Now here come the 2014 Nationals, featuring largely the same roster - including Strasburg on the mound, and Harper in left field, both feeling good after offseason surgery - and with rookie manager Matt Williams replacing Davey Johnson, he of the ''World Series or bust'' proclamation.
One key difference: The club knows what it's like to experience a truly disappointing, worse-than-they-were-supposed-to-be season for the first time since moving from Montreal in 2005.
''We got ahead of ourselves a little bit. My take on it was always: Last year in spring training, we had expectations on ourselves, really, for the first time, and we thought we were better, maybe, than we were,'' reliever Tyler Clippard said. ''We came into the season expecting to win, which is a good thing. But at the same time, we might not have went out there and earned it, like we should have.''
Yes, the team that got Strasburg and Harper thanks to consecutive 100-loss seasons is trying to deal with lofty goals.
''To see the organization from basically, literally, the ground up, improve is something I kind of take pride in, because when I signed, people would be like, `Oh, you play for the Expos and the Nationals,' and they'd be like, `Uh, OK, I don't know them,''' said shortstop Ian Desmond, drafted by Montreal in 2004. ''And now, it's like there's some pride behind playing for the Washington Nationals.''

*Diamondbacks-Nationals Preview* ================================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

Arizona (53-73) at Washington (71-53), 4:05 p.m. EDT

Coming off yet another thrilling victory, the surging Washington Nationals are running away with the NL East.

They figure to become all the more dangerous if Gio Gonzalez can find his form.

Gonzalez takes the hill as the Nationals go for a team record-tying 10th consecutive victory in Thursday's series finale against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks.

Washington (72-53) stayed hot with Wednesday's 3-2 win thanks to Anthony Rendon's pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was the fourth walkoff victory in five games for the Nationals, who are enjoying their longest winning streak since matching a franchise record with 10 straight in June 2005.

"It's absolutely epic. That's the best word I can put out there," left fielder Bryce Harper said. "It's been incredible. This team has a lot of fight, a lot of heart. We never die."

Harper had a season high-tying three hits and scored the winning run as Washington increased its division lead to seven games after Atlanta lost at Pittsburgh.

"It's gratifying for (the players), it's exciting for them," manager Matt Williams said. "It's not a whole of fun in the dugout for the staff, but that's OK."

The Nationals now turn to Gonzalez (6-9, 4.06 ERA), who is 0-5 with a 5.20 ERA in his last seven starts. He managed to avoid losing a career-worst sixth consecutive decision after Washington stormed back in Saturday's 4-3 walkoff win over Pittsburgh. The left-hander allowed three runs, seven hits and two walks before exiting after five innings.

"I made pitches that I wanted to make, just tough breaks," he told MLB's official website. "I got ground balls that I wanted, they just found the hole. I got broken bats, and they found hits. So that's just baseball. That's how it's going for me this year. You've got to keep grinding, keep grinding."

Gonzalez has won both his starts against the Diamondbacks behind a 2.03 ERA. Mark Trumbo is 3 for 12 with six strikeouts against him and Aaron Hill is 2 for 10.

Hill is mired in a 3-for-29 slump after going 0 for 4 on Wednesday. All-Star catcher Miguel Montero has also struggled of late with six hits in his last 31 at-bats.

The Diamondbacks, hitting .192 in this series, have dropped five in a row by a combined 28-11 score and lost two of the three games in Washington after pulling even late.

"Of course it's disappointing," manager Kirk Gibson said. "They've got it rolling and they overtook us again."

Wade Miley (7-9, 4.46) takes the mound for Arizona looking to snap a three-start winless funk. The left-hander pitched well Saturday but took the loss in a 2-1 defeat at Miami, yielding both runs - one earned - and striking out nine over seven innings.

"That's when you've got to focus more," Miley said after committing one of Arizona's season-high four errors. "We're all human and make mistakes. It's my job to pick them up. That's really what you try to do."

Miley is 1-2 in four starts against the Nationals despite a 2.59 ERA. He's had a rough time against Rendon, who is 5 for 6 in their matchups.
