KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''
WASHINGTON: WASHINGTON (AP) - Thanks in part to No. 1 overall draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, the 2012 Washington Nationals were considered an up-and-coming team, perhaps a year or two away from contending.
So what did they do? Went out and led the majors with 98 wins.
Thanks to that quick rise, the 2013 Nationals became a popular pick to go to the World Series. So what did they do? Stumbled at the start and missed out on the playoffs.
Now here come the 2014 Nationals, featuring largely the same roster - including Strasburg on the mound, and Harper in left field, both feeling good after offseason surgery - and with rookie manager Matt Williams replacing Davey Johnson, he of the ''World Series or bust'' proclamation.
One key difference: The club knows what it's like to experience a truly disappointing, worse-than-they-were-supposed-to-be season for the first time since moving from Montreal in 2005.
''We got ahead of ourselves a little bit. My take on it was always: Last year in spring training, we had expectations on ourselves, really, for the first time, and we thought we were better, maybe, than we were,'' reliever Tyler Clippard said. ''We came into the season expecting to win, which is a good thing. But at the same time, we might not have went out there and earned it, like we should have.''
Yes, the team that got Strasburg and Harper thanks to consecutive 100-loss seasons is trying to deal with lofty goals.
''To see the organization from basically, literally, the ground up, improve is something I kind of take pride in, because when I signed, people would be like, `Oh, you play for the Expos and the Nationals,' and they'd be like, `Uh, OK, I don't know them,''' said shortstop Ian Desmond, drafted by Montreal in 2004. ''And now, it's like there's some pride behind playing for the Washington Nationals.''

*Diamondbacks-Nationals Preview* ================================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Arizona (53-72) at Washington (70-53), 7:05 p.m. EDT

The Washington Nationals have thrived in one-run contests during their season-best win streak after struggling at times in those games for much of the rest of this season.

The Nationals didn't need to sweat one out in Stephen Strasburg's latest start and he'll try to build on that dominant effort while leading his team to an eighth consecutive victory Tuesday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Washington (70-53) has earned five wins by one run during its seven-game streak, including each of its last four, after going 13-18 in those contests prior to that run.

Tyler Clippard allowed his first home run in 51 games Monday to David Peralta in the ninth inning, but Adam LaRoche gave his club a 5-4 victory with a two-out solo shot in the 11th, the Nationals' third walk-off win in as many games.

Washington, which remained six games ahead of Atlanta in the NL East, hasn't won eight in a row since Aug. 4-11, 2012, and will seek its first seven-game home win streak since May 31-June 18, 2011.

Strasburg (9-10, 3.53 ERA) will attempt to lead the way following Thursday's 4-1 road win over the New York Mets. He gave up one unearned run, three hits and two walks while striking out eight in seven innings.

Strasburg has 27 strikeouts in 19 innings in three games this month, but allowed seven runs and a career-high four homers over five innings in a 7-6 loss in Atlanta on Aug. 8. The difference in Thursday's game, the right-hander told MLB's official website, was his willingness to pitch inside more often and a focus on better command of his fastball.

"We look at Stras as our horse," pitcher Gio Gonzalez said. "He will always be our ace. He has such talent and is willing to learn more."

While he's 2-8 with a 4.77 ERA in 13 road starts, Strasburg is 7-1 with a 2.20 ERA in his last 12 at home. He's also 2-1 with a 2.53 ERA in five career starts against Arizona but took a 3-1 road loss in his lone matchup this season May 13, giving up three runs and eight hits in seven innings.

The Diamondbacks (53-72) have lost 11 of 16 this month and 15 of 23 on the road. Ender Inciarte, though, has shined lately with an 18-game hit streak, tied for the fourth longest in the majors this season.

The rookie outfielder, batting .316 during his run, will next try to help give Chase Anderson enough support for a third consecutive winning decision.

Anderson (7-4, 3.16) had allowed two runs or fewer in five straight games before giving up three in six innings Thursday in Miami. He was in line for the win until Brad Ziegler gave up a run in the eighth in a 5-4 loss in 10 innings.

Anderson will make his first start against Washington, and Asdrubal Cabrera is the only Nationals hitter to have faced him, going 0 for 2 with a sacrifice fly. Inciarte has never faced Strasburg and neither has Mark Trumbo, who has reached base in 17 consecutive games and hit safely in 15 of those.
