KEY GAME INFORMATION
ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - Last October, the St. Louis Cardinals were sufficiently flush with arms that they carried rookie Shelby Miller and deposed closer Edward Mujica in ceremonial roles and made it to Game 6 of the World Series against Boston.
After leading major league rookies with 15 wins, Miller was limited to one postseason inning due to concerns about a heavy workload. Mujica was used only in mop-up duty after mid-September.
The National League champions are perhaps even deeper, across the board, entering opening day March 31 at Cincinnati. The team that tied for the major league high with 97 wins has a surplus of viable candidates.
''I think we have the potential to be great,'' said ace Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in NL Cy Young balloting. ''We just have to go out there, not listen to the hype, and perform.''
The 32-year-old Wainwright qualifies as the grizzled leader of a rotation that could include three members coming off big rookie debuts. Michael Wacha was a postseason sensation and the NLCS MVP, Miller went wire-to-wire as the fifth starter and Carlos Martinez, who's had an impressive spring, moved into the setup role when fellow rookie Trevor Rosenthal took over as closer.
Wacha and Martinez are 22, Miller and Rosenthal just 23.
There's also 15-game winner Lance Lynn, who struck out 10 in four innings of his last spring training start, and lefty Jaime Garcia could fit into the mix sometime in April coming off shoulder surgery. And don't forget Joe Kelly, another rookie who won 10 games and was the rotation's strongest starter much of the second half.
And one of the National League's best lineups, too.
Much is expected from a loyal fan base that extends several states, and that's OK.
''Our expectations,'' Lynn said, ''are higher than theirs.''
WASHINGTON: WASHINGTON (AP) - Thanks in part to No. 1 overall draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, the 2012 Washington Nationals were considered an up-and-coming team, perhaps a year or two away from contending.
So what did they do? Went out and led the majors with 98 wins.
Thanks to that quick rise, the 2013 Nationals became a popular pick to go to the World Series. So what did they do? Stumbled at the start and missed out on the playoffs.
Now here come the 2014 Nationals, featuring largely the same roster - including Strasburg on the mound, and Harper in left field, both feeling good after offseason surgery - and with rookie manager Matt Williams replacing Davey Johnson, he of the ''World Series or bust'' proclamation.
One key difference: The club knows what it's like to experience a truly disappointing, worse-than-they-were-supposed-to-be season for the first time since moving from Montreal in 2005.
''We got ahead of ourselves a little bit. My take on it was always: Last year in spring training, we had expectations on ourselves, really, for the first time, and we thought we were better, maybe, than we were,'' reliever Tyler Clippard said. ''We came into the season expecting to win, which is a good thing. But at the same time, we might not have went out there and earned it, like we should have.''
Yes, the team that got Strasburg and Harper thanks to consecutive 100-loss seasons is trying to deal with lofty goals.
''To see the organization from basically, literally, the ground up, improve is something I kind of take pride in, because when I signed, people would be like, `Oh, you play for the Expos and the Nationals,' and they'd be like, `Uh, OK, I don't know them,''' said shortstop Ian Desmond, drafted by Montreal in 2004. ''And now, it's like there's some pride behind playing for the Washington Nationals.''

*Cardinals-Nationals Preview* =============================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

St. Louis (9-6) at Washington (9-6), 7:05 p.m. EDT

Consistent rain hasn't dampened Michael Wacha's impressive start to 2014.

As the St. Louis Cardinals seek a ninth straight win over the Washington Nationals, Wacha will take the mound with a dry forecast for the first time Friday night.

Wacha (2-0, 1.89 ERA) has been solid despite having to overcome rain delays in each of his three outings during his first full season in the majors.

"He's strong and he knows what to do out there," manager Mike Matheny said. "He keeps a good focus."

Wacha needed to stay locked in again Sunday in a 6-4 win over the Chicago Cubs. He waited out a 46-minute delay in the third inning before leaving with one out in the seventh, allowing three runs with eight strikeouts for St. Louis (10-6).

"I'm used to it," said Wacha, last year's NL championship series MVP. "You just have to accept it and you've got to stay focused. I tried to stay loose and just keep my mind in what I needed to do."

Wacha was outstanding in his only previous meeting with Washington (9-7) on Sept. 24, taking a no-hit bid into the ninth inning before allowing a single to Ryan Zimmerman with two outs during a 2-0 victory. He won't have to deal with Zimmerman this time after the Nationals third baseman was sidelined by a broken thumb.

St. Louis has won 11 of 13 against Washington, including the five games of the 2012 NL division series. Adam Wainwright continued that mastery Thursday, tossing a two-hitter in an 8-0 win in the opener of this four-game set in the nation's capital.

Matt Holliday doubled for one of his two hits and added two RBIs, while Matt Adams had a single and drove in three runs.

Holliday is 8 for 22 (.364) in six games after batting .216 over the first 10, and the left fielder owns a .361 average over his last 20 regular-season games against the Nats.

Adams has been superb so far with a .355 average, and he's 6 for 15 (.400) while plating four runs in as many games against Washington.

While the Cardinals have won five of six, the Nationals have dropped five of seven.

Washington's chances at turning the tide may not bode well since its batting .153 with 12 runs over the last eight regular-season meetings with St. Louis. The Nats also lead the majors with 20 errors after committing a season-high four Thursday.

"It's not lack of effort. It's not lack of preparation," manager Matt Williams said. "It's not lack of anything."

Bryce Harper is 4 for 24 (.167) in seven games against St. Louis, going 0 for 3 with a strikeout versus Wacha. The 21-year-old left fielder went 0 for 4 on Thursday, ending an eight-game hitting streak during which he batted .483.

Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 3.50) is slated to get the ball for Washington. He allowed two runs in seven innings opposite Wacha on Sept. 24. The left-hander tossed a five-hitter in a 10-0 win in his only regular-season home meeting versus St. Louis on Aug. 31, 2012.

Gonzalez enters this matchup looking to rebound from Sunday's 10-2 loss at Atlanta. He was tagged for six runs and nine hits - including two homers - with four walks while hitting a batter in six innings.

That came after he won his first two starts while yielding one run over 12 innings.
