| |  | BALTIMORE: HITTING: The leadoff spot is 2B BRIAN ROBERTS' if he can stay on the field. His recent injury history is very troubling, though his talent makes him a risk worth taking. 2B ROBERT ANDINO and 2B RYAN ADAMS would compete for time if Roberts is out. The O's best hitter last year was arguably SS J.J. HARDY. He was healthy for the first time in years and flexed his legit 30-HR power. If Roberts and Hardy stay healthy, OF NICK MARKAKIS will likely hit third and see an increase in RBI chances. OF ADAM JONES seems to have the highest ceiling of any Baltimore hitter. 3B MARK REYNOLDS will probably end up at 1B. His horrendous average cancels out some of his 40-HR potential. OF NOLAN REIMOLD revived his MLB career with an impressive end of the season. He's got a shot to start in left. 1B CHRIS DAVIS is a candidate to start at first, third or DH as sort of a Junior Mark Reynolds. C MATT WIETERS is already one of the best two-way backstops in baseball at age 25.
STARTING PITCHING: WEI-YIN CHEN pitched well enough in Japan (2.48 ERA, 1.06 WHIP in past four seasons) to become the de-facto ace of this horrible pitching staff. JAKE ARRIETA is a mediocre talent, but is good enough to secure a spot as a Baltimore starter. JASON HAMMEL hopes the switch from Coors Field will help lower his career ERA of 4.99. The highest-risk, highest-potential O's pitcher may be BRIAN MATUSZ. His 2011 line is frightening (10.69 ERA, 2.11 WHIP), but he has the raw skills and pitch repertoire to turn it around. TOMMY HUNTER came over from Texas midseason and should round out the rotation.
RELIEF PITCHING: There was talk of JIM JOHNSON being converted into a starter, but he'll open the season as the team's closer. Johnson established himself as the O's best option to close after going 7-for-7 in that role last September. KEVIN GREGG would step in as the ninth-inning man if Johnson falters. He was unstable in that role last year. Gregg is a trade candidate this midseason, in which case he'd probably end up a set-up man elsewhere. Flame-throwing MATT LINDSTROM is a darkhorse for saves. He saved 23 games for Houston in 2010 before being used as a set-up man in Colorado last year. TSUYOSHI WADA brings his finesse game from Japan. He's a heady hurler who hides the ball well, but he's in for a rude awakening in the A.L. East. BRAD BERGESEN and CHRIS JAKUBAUSKAS are long relievers who may get bumped into the rotation if the young Baltimore SPs struggle again. | | WASHINGTON: HITTING: The Nats were among the eight worst teams in the majors in runs (3.88 per game), BA (.242), OBP (.309) and OPS (.691). Much of that had to do with the first two spots in the batting order hitting .285 OBP and .283 OBP respectively. OF ROGER BERNADINA (.301 OBP) and SS IAN DESMOND (.298 OBP) were the regular 1-2 hitters in the order. $126 million OF JAYSON WERTH was also to blame, batting .232 with a meager 58 RBI in 561 at-bats. 3B RYAN ZIMMERMAN also missed two months with an abdominal problem and had a down year with 12 HR and 49 RBI in 101 games. But OF MIKE MORSE had a breakout season, leading the Nats in batting (.303), HR (31) and RBI (95). 1B ADAM LaROCHE suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in June, but should be fully healed. Washington is counting on a pair of talented 24-year-olds to contribute a little more in 2B DANNY ESPINOSA (.236 BA, 21 HR) and C WILSON RAMOS (15 HR in 389 AB).
STARTING PITCHING: STEPHEN STRASBURG is back fully healed from Tommy John surgery, but will reportedly be limited to 160 innings in 2012. That's still enough time to strike out 150 batters and win a dozen games though. In sending four quality prospects to Oakland, the Nats paid a huge price for GIO GONZALEZ. They hope he can overcome his control issues and become an elite No. 2. Well-traveled EDWIN JACKSON was also brought in to help bolster the rotation. He joins his sixth different club since 2008, but Jackson is just 28 years old and was serviceable after being traded to St. Louis last year (5-2, 3.58 ERA). JORDAN ZIMMERMANN was in the same boat as Strasburg last year, coming off elbow surgery and limited to 161.1 innings. But in that time, he had a team-best 3.18 ERA and 4.0 K-to-BB ratio (124 K, 31 BB). JOHN LANNAN remains the top lefty in the Nats rotation with a team-high 10 wins in 2011. He dominated left-handed hitters last year (.211 BA, 55 K in 185 AB), but still needs to improve his weak 1.4 K-to-BB ratio (106 K, 76 BB).
RELIEF PITCHING: DREW STOREN had a phenomenal first year as a full-time closer, saving 43-of-48 games with a 2.75 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 74 K in 75.1 innings. His role will remain the same in 2012 once he returns from the 15-day DL (elbow) to start the season. Newcomer BRAD LIDGE was limited to 25 innings because of shoulder problems last year, but he appears to be the closer until Storen returns. The Nats have arguably the best set-up man in the game in TYLER CLIPPARD, who led the majors with 38 holds and posted a 1.83 ERA and 0.84 WHIP for the season. He held opponents to a .162 average and fanned 104 batters in 88.1 innings of work. Lefty SEAN BURNETT saw a huge decline in his numbers, as his ERA rose from 2.14 to 3.81 and his WHIP jumped from 1.14 to 1.32. This was mostly due to a diminishing strikeout rate (8.9 to 5.2 last year). |

Having followed up a losing streak with a successful four-game stretch, the Washington Nationals enter the Beltway Series with momentum on their side.
The Baltimore Orioles are looking to put a crushing loss behind them.
The Nationals try to keep rolling when they open a four-game set against the visiting Orioles on Monday.
Washington (26-24) had dropped a season high-tying four straight before winning three of four, defeating Philadelphia 6-1 on Sunday. Stephen Strasburg threw eight innings and Steve Lombardozzi doubled home a pair of runs for the Nationals, who have collected at least 10 hits in three straight contests.
"Things are starting to unfold," shortstop Ian Desmond said. "We're starting to play the game better."
While the Nationals appear to be back on track, the Orioles (27-23) saw things fall apart in a 6-5 walkoff loss at Toronto on Sunday. Baltimore had won four of five and appeared headed for another victory before closer Jim Johnson allowed four runs in the ninth inning.
It's been a rough couple of weeks for Johnson, who's blown four of his last five save chances while surrendering 12 runs in his last six appearances spanning five innings.
"We should be getting on the plane with three wins here, but I can't hang my head too long," he said. "It's going to hurt for a little bit, and it should."
The Orioles now turn their attention to the Nationals, from whom they've taken 10 of 15. These clubs play again Tuesday in Washington before the series shifts to Baltimore.
"It's a place we have played before, it's not as much adjustment as there usually is," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Nationals Park. "The game is the game - it's 90 feet (between bases). But the biggest thing is trying to familiarize yourselves with the players."
Baltimore may not be looking forward to facing Gio Gonzalez (3-2, 3.66 ERA), who's gone 1-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four starts this month. The left-hander allowed one run and four hits over 7 1-3 innings Wednesday, retiring 15 of 16 at one point in a 2-1, 10-inning win at San Francisco.
Gonzalez posted a 4.85 ERA in losing his last two outings versus Baltimore while with Oakland in 2011. Matt Wieters is 7 for 13 with a home run against him while Adam Jones is 3 for 16.
Jones went 3 for 5 on Sunday and has homered in a career-high four straight games. He's batting .383 with seven homers and 21 RBIs in 30 career games versus Washington.
The Orioles lead the majors with 69 home runs and a .460 slugging percentage.
"Just trying to pound the strike zone, especially knowing that Baltimore's a very aggressive hitting team," Gonzalez said. "So my job is to make sure to keep myself in the game and try to compete at the highest level to give my team a chance to win."
The Orioles' Jason Hammel (6-2, 5.37) gave up two runs in a season high-tying 6 2-3 innings Wednesday, recording his first quality start in five tries in a 6-3 win over the New York Yankees.
The right-hander has won four consecutive starts versus Washington and is 5-0 with a 3.30 ERA in seven career matchups. He allowed one unearned run and struck out a career high-tying 10 over eight innings to beat the Nationals 2-1 on June 22.
Bryce Harper and Denard Span are a combined 0 for 13 against him and Adam LaRoche is 1 for 11, though the hit was a home run.
Harper aggravated his sore left knee Sunday and was removed for a pinch runner in the seventh inning. While manager Davey Johnson said Harper will "probably be down a few days", Harper said he doesn't expect to miss any time.
