KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHI WHITE SOX: HITTING: The departure of Juan Pierre opens things up for SS ALEXEI RAMIREZ to hit leadoff. 2B GORDON BECKHAM will get a fresh start, but his leash is shortening. 1B PAUL KONERKO faded last year. He's potential trade bait for the rebuilding Sox. Did DH ADAM DUNN need a year to adjust to A.L. pitching and DHing? With his contract, the Sox will have to find out. OF ALEJANDRO DE AZA's late-season surge probably wasn't for real, but it was enough to get him the inside track on a starting job with Carlos Quentin having been dealt to the Padres on New Year's Eve. OF ALEX RIOS has bounced back before, but at his age the odds are longer now. The organization believes in OF DAYAN VICIEDO. His improving approach and power fit well in U.S. Cellular, but he could platoon with KOSUKE FUKUDOME in left field. C A.J. PIERZYNSKI has motivation for one more solid season as free agency looms. 3B BRENT MOREL is good glove, but has a limited stick. OF/1B BRENT LILLIBRIDGE has an improving bat and can play just about anywhere.
STARTING PITCHING: JOHN DANKS doesn't look like a true No. 1 starter, but he keeps consistently throwing strikes and has some swing-and-miss stuff. Maybe it's because he's fallen short of his once-elite prospect status, but GAVIN FLOYD seems to get no respect as a quality middle-of-the-rotation arm. He was especially good after adding a cutter/slider-type pitch last year. JAKE PEAVY isn't going to win another Cy Young, but unlike last year, his shoulder should be close to 100 percent. The big question will again be whether, as a flyball pitcher, he can keep the ball in the park at cozy U.S. Cellular. PHILIP HUMBER was a nice surprise in 2011, but don't be fooled. It wasn't a former top prospect finally figuring it out. It was a back-of-the-rotation arm getting some good breaks. CHRIS SALE will make the move to the rotation. He'll likely be on some pitch counts, but this is an exciting development. With his stuff (he already has a solid changeup to go with his fastball/slider combo) he has monster upside.
RELIEF PITCHING: With closer Sergio Santos shipped off to Toronto, youngster ADDISON REED figures to be the top candidate to close games. Any young closer is a risk, but Reed's fastball/slider combo has been dominant over two pro seasons. Lefty MATT THORNTON might have blown his chance to claim the closer role last year. He had regained his form as a top set-up man late in the year, but if Reed falters he might be no more than a committee guy. JESSE CRAIN chased strikeouts more aggressively last year, but he also issued more walks. He may miss the first couple weeks of the season with an oblique injury.
WASHINGTON: HITTING: The Nats were among the eight worst teams in the majors in runs (3.88 per game), BA (.242), OBP (.309) and OPS (.691). Much of that had to do with the first two spots in the batting order hitting .285 OBP and .283 OBP respectively. OF ROGER BERNADINA (.301 OBP) and SS IAN DESMOND (.298 OBP) were the regular 1-2 hitters in the order. $126 million OF JAYSON WERTH was also to blame, batting .232 with a meager 58 RBI in 561 at-bats. 3B RYAN ZIMMERMAN also missed two months with an abdominal problem and had a down year with 12 HR and 49 RBI in 101 games. But OF MIKE MORSE had a breakout season, leading the Nats in batting (.303), HR (31) and RBI (95). 1B ADAM LaROCHE suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in June, but should be fully healed. Washington is counting on a pair of talented 24-year-olds to contribute a little more in 2B DANNY ESPINOSA (.236 BA, 21 HR) and C WILSON RAMOS (15 HR in 389 AB).
STARTING PITCHING: STEPHEN STRASBURG is back fully healed from Tommy John surgery, but will reportedly be limited to 160 innings in 2012. That's still enough time to strike out 150 batters and win a dozen games though. In sending four quality prospects to Oakland, the Nats paid a huge price for GIO GONZALEZ. They hope he can overcome his control issues and become an elite No. 2. Well-traveled EDWIN JACKSON was also brought in to help bolster the rotation. He joins his sixth different club since 2008, but Jackson is just 28 years old and was serviceable after being traded to St. Louis last year (5-2, 3.58 ERA). JORDAN ZIMMERMANN was in the same boat as Strasburg last year, coming off elbow surgery and limited to 161.1 innings. But in that time, he had a team-best 3.18 ERA and 4.0 K-to-BB ratio (124 K, 31 BB). JOHN LANNAN remains the top lefty in the Nats rotation with a team-high 10 wins in 2011. He dominated left-handed hitters last year (.211 BA, 55 K in 185 AB), but still needs to improve his weak 1.4 K-to-BB ratio (106 K, 76 BB).
RELIEF PITCHING: DREW STOREN had a phenomenal first year as a full-time closer, saving 43-of-48 games with a 2.75 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 74 K in 75.1 innings. His role will remain the same in 2012 once he returns from the 15-day DL (elbow) to start the season. Newcomer BRAD LIDGE was limited to 25 innings because of shoulder problems last year, but he appears to be the closer until Storen returns. The Nats have arguably the best set-up man in the game in TYLER CLIPPARD, who led the majors with 38 holds and posted a 1.83 ERA and 0.84 WHIP for the season. He held opponents to a .162 average and fanned 104 batters in 88.1 innings of work. Lefty SEAN BURNETT saw a huge decline in his numbers, as his ERA rose from 2.14 to 3.81 and his WHIP jumped from 1.14 to 1.32. This was mostly due to a diminishing strikeout rate (8.9 to 5.2 last year).

*White Sox-Nationals Preview* =============================

Chicago (4-3) at Washington (5-2), 7:05 p.m. EDT

Many believed the Washington Nationals' star-studded rotation would become all the more formidable with Dan Haren on board.

The former three-time All-Star, though, wasn't sharp in his first start.

Haren looks to bounce back from a forgettable season debut as the Nationals, enjoying their best home start in more than three decades, go for a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.

Signed to a one-year deal this offseason after 2 1/2 years with the Angels, Haren (0-1, 13.50 ERA) didn't make a very good first impression in Friday's 15-0 loss at Cincinnati. The veteran right-hander, who gave up a career worst-tying four homers, was tagged for six runs and nine hits over four innings.

"I've had my share of bad games along with good games," he said. "They're tough to deal with, but the sooner you forget about it, the better. It's such a long season. I've probably got 30-plus starts left. This start isn't going to define how the year goes."

Manager Davey Johnson didn't appear too concerned, either.

"It's just one game," Johnson told MLB's official website. "He is a quality pitcher. He knows how to pitch. When you think of spring training, you are getting your arm in shape. He is working on a few things. Just move on."

Haren could get a boost from the Nationals' bats, which have started to heat up. After hitting four homers in Tuesday's 8-7 win, Washington (6-2) went 4 for 10 with runners in scoring position during a 5-2 victory Wednesday.

Bryce Harper went 2 for 4 with his team-leading fourth home run as the Nationals improved to 5-0 at home for the first time since opening a franchise-best 9-0 in 1981, when the club was based in Montreal.

Ian Desmond and Danny Espinosa also contributed, going a combined 5 for 8 with three runs scored. Espinosa added his first two RBIs of the season.

"There were a lot of guys that had really good (at-bats) and really came up big for us," said Harper, who has recorded two hits in six of eight games.

Chicago (4-4), which has dropped four of six, is looking to avoid opening 0-3 on the road for the first time since 2003.

The White Sox will try to bounce back behind Dylan Axelrod (0-0, 0.00), who allowed one unearned run and three hits over 5 2-3 innings in Saturday's 4-3 win over Seattle.

"You couldn't tell what he's thinking by what's going on out there," manager Robin Ventura said. "It doesn't matter the situation. He's under control. He's very confident. Very composed for a young pitcher, but also he knows what he's doing. He's confident."

Axelrod, who has never faced Washington, went 1-1 with a 2.13 ERA over four road starts last season.

Haren, meanwhile, has gone 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in three outings against the White Sox over the last two years.

Alex Rios is 4 for 9 against him in that span and is off to a hot start, posting a .419 average while hitting safely in all eight games. Rios went 2 for 4 with an RBI on Wednesday but saw his four-game homer streak come to an end.

Adam Dunn has gone 1 for his last 12 versus Haren with six strikeouts, but Jeff Keppinger is 8 for 16 lifetime against him.

Keppinger, batting just .133, started at second base Wednesday in place of Gordon Beckham, who sat out with an injured left wrist. Beckham is unlikely to be available in this game.
