Projected lineup: 3B Yunel Escobar (.304, 5 HR, 39 RBI), RF Kole Calhoun (.271, 18, 75), CF Mike Trout (.315, 29, 100, 30 SB), DH Albert Pujols (.268, 31, 119), 1B C.J. Cron (.278, 16, 69) or Luis Valbuena (.260, 13, 40 in 90 games with Astros), LF Cameron Maybin (.315, 4, 43, 15 SB with Tigers), 2B Danny Espinosa (.209, 24, 72 with Nationals), SS Andrelton Simmons (.281, 4, 44, 10 in 124 games), C Martin Maldonado (.202, 8, 21 with Brewers) or Carlos Perez (.209, 5, 31)
Rotation: RH Garrett Richards (1-3, 2.34 in six starts), RH Matt Shoemaker (9-13, 3.88), LH Tyler Skaggs (3-4, 4.17), RH Ricky Nolasco (8-14, 4.42 with Twins and Angels), RH Jesse Chavez (2-2, 4.43 with Blue Jays and Dodgers) or RH Bud Norris (6-10, 5.10 for Braves and Dodgers)
Key relievers: RH Huston Street (3-2, 6.45, 9/12 SV), RH Cam Bedrosian (2-0, 1.12), RH Andrew Bailey (3-1, 5.36 6/7 SV for Phillies and Angels), RH J.C. Ramirez (2-1, 2.91), LH Jose Alvarez (1-3, 3.45), RH Austin Adams (0-0, 9.82 with Indians), RH Yusmeiro Petit (3-5, 4.30 with Nationals), RH Mike Morin (2-2, 4.37)
Hot spots: First base and fifth starter. Pujols started 23 games at first base last year, and will likely play fewer this year after offseason plantar fascia surgery. For now, Pujols is the primary DH, Cron is the first baseman, and Valbuena will begin the season on the DL with a strained hamstring. One problem: neither Cron (.698 OPS) nor Valbuena (.666) could hit lefties last year. The top candidates for fifth starter are similarly flawed. Chavez and Norris finished last season as relievers. Alex Meyer has six major league starts to his name. The Angels might need all of them at points in 2017.
Outlook: It's hard to be too optimistic about a team that's made one playoff appearance in seven years. Yet it's hard to be too pessimistic considering the hard-luck injuries that decimated the Angels in 2016, particularly on the pitching side. Still, 2017 figures to be a transition year. The back of the rotation is a patch job until Tommy John patients Andrew Heaney and Nick Tropeano return from rehab. The Angels will gain some financial freedom after the season, when Josh Hamilton finally comes off the books. Any positive momentum in the meantime would make Anaheim a more attractive destination for free agents. Getting back above .500 would be a realistic step in that direction; anything beyond that is a bonus
TORONTO: 2016: 89-73, second place
Manager: John Gibbons (10th season)
Who's new? 1B/DH Kendrys Morales, C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, IF/OF Steve Pearce, IF Lourdes Gurriel, LHP J.P. Howell, RHP Joe Smith
Who's gone? 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion, OF Michael Saunders, C Josh Thole, C Dioner Navarro, OF Junior Lake, RHP R.A. Dickey, LHP Brett Cecil, RHP Joaquin Benoit
Projected lineup: 2B Devon Travis (.300, 11 HR, 50 RBI), 3B Josh Donaldson (.284, 37, 99), RF Jose Bautista (.234, 22, 69), DH Kendrys Morales (.263, 30, 93 with Royals), SS Troy Tulowitzki (.254, 24, 79), C Russell Martin (.231, 20, 74), 1B Justin Smoak (.217, 14, 34), CF Kevin Pillar (.266, 7, 53, 14 SB), LF Ezequiel Carrera (.248, 6, 23)
Rotation: RH Marco Estrada (9-9, 3.48 ERA), LH J.A. Happ (20-4, 3.18), RH Marcus Stroman (9-10, 4.37), RH Aaron Sanchez (15-2, 3.00), LH Francisco Liriano (8-13, 4.69 with Pirates and Blue Jays)
Key relievers: RH Roberto Osuna (4-3, 2.68, 36/42 SV), RH Jason Grilli (6-4, 3.64), RH Joe Biagini (4-3, 3.06), LH J.P. Howell (1-1, 4.09 with Dodgers), RH Joe Smith (1-4, 3.82 with Angels), LH Aaron Loup (0-0, 5.02)
Hot spots: bullpen. The Blue Jays signed only a couple high-profile free agents (retaining Bautista, adding Morales) and brought in many lower-profile veterans mostly to compete for bullpen jobs. Howell and Smith, signed to low-risk deals, are all but guaranteed jobs. But what of Dominic Leone, Mat Latos, Mike Bolsinger, Lucas Harrell and Leonel Campos? Toronto seems to be crowd-sourcing its middle innings with low-risk, right-handed options. Up to a half-dozen pitchers could be competing for one or two jobs.
Outlook: The Blue Jays' roster is enviably balanced, albeit among the older ones in the league. Toronto led the AL in ERA last year. Their entire starting rotation returns, and their veteran bullpen is set up well to support second-year closer Osuna. Ironically, the youngest player in the Jays' starting lineup, 26-year-old Travis, has the biggest health concern of the bunch. He didn't appear in a spring training game until recently because of offseason knee surgery. Encarnacion, who was good for .270/30/100 every year, will be missed. The question now is whether Morales (33), Bautista (36), Tulowitzki (32) and Martin (34) are still close enough to their primes to power another playoff run.
PREVIEW
Streaking Blue Jays look to keep Angels down

TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels will meet at Rogers Centre on Friday night after being on opposite sides of series sweeps.

Friday's game is the opener of a three-game set with Toronto's J.A. Happ (3-7, 4.13 ERA) facing Los Angeles' Parker Bridwell (4-1, 3.09).

The Blue Jays are coming off a four-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics, with the final two victories coming as the result of game-ending home runs. It was the first time in franchise history they had won back-to-back games in such fashion.

They completed the sweep Thursday on a grand slam by Steve Pearce with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning.

The Angels, meanwhile, were swept by the Cleveland Indians in a three-game series that was completed Thursday with Cleveland's 2-1 victory at Progressive Field.

The Angels, who were swept for the first time since April 14-16 against the Kansas City Royals, dropped to five games below .500 for the first time this season.

"We just had a tough series," Angels designated hitter Albert Pujols said. "The road trip is not over. We need to go to Toronto and try to win tomorrow and hopefully win the series. I think that's the way that I look at this team. Everybody just goes out there and gives everything that they have. We're not throwing in the towel. We have a lot of games left."

"Every single game, we were there with them," said Angels outfielder Ben Revere, who was with the Blue Jays for part of the 2015 season. "We just can't get a break."

The Angels (49-54) are 7-12 in July. The Blue Jays (48-54), who have won four in a row after a 3-7 road trip, are 11-12 for the month.

The Blue Jays have had only one winning month this season when they went 18-10 in May. They are hoping they can make a surge that can revive their faint postseason hopes. The Angels also have similar hopes, which makes the series so important since they would be competing for wild-card spots.

Los Angeles is 5 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot while Toronto is six back.

"Hopefully we just keep the ball rolling," Pearce said. "We're getting down to the end of the season, so we've got to step it up. And this was a great series (against Oakland) to get it started."

Happ will be looking for his first win since July 4 at Yankee Stadium.

The left-hander is 0-2 with a 6.60 ERA in three starts since his last win and the Blue Jays are 0-3 in those starts. He allowed four runs in the first inning Sunday in an 8-1 loss to Cleveland at Progressive Field. He allowed nine hits and seven runs.

He has not had much success against the Angels, going 1-5 with a 6.52 ERA in six career starts.

Bridwell will be making his ninth appearance (eighth start) of the season and fourth on the road in his first career appearance against the Blue Jays.

He earned the win against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday after tossing a career-high seven innings, allowing two runs and five hits with one walk. He had three strikeouts. He lost his no-hitter with two outs in fifth inning on a single by Sandy Leon.

In three starts on the road this season, is 2-0 with a 2.04 ERA. The Angels are 7-1 in the games he has pitched, and he has allowed two runs or fewer in five of his past six starts. He is 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA in his past three outings.
