KEY GAME INFORMATION
TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
TORONTO: TORONTO (AP) - All winter long, the Blue Jays' primary concern was upgrading the starting pitching. The biggest story in Toronto this spring, though, is the one about the free agent arm that got away.
After months of inaction, the Blue Jays thought they'd landed right-hander Ervin Santana on a one-year deal in early March. But when injury concerns flared up in Atlanta, Santana signed a similar deal with the Braves instead.
''I think it's pretty obvious we were involved, it didn't work out. I'm trying to take the high road here,'' general manager Alex Anthopoulos said after Santana turned him down, saying he'd rather pitch in a spacious National League park than face AL East foes in Toronto's hitter-friendly dome.
Anthopoulos, who'd previously come ''extremely close'' to acquiring a starter through trade, must now start the season with almost the same staff he took north last year. Right-handed knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, the 2012 NL Cy Young winner, will be the opening-day starter again, while left-hander Mark Buehrle gets the third slot.
But none of the other three leading contenders, right-handers Brandon Morrow and Drew Hutchison, and left-hander J.A. Happ, have ever pitched 200 innings, and all three are coming off injuries. Morrow was limited to 10 starts last year by a nerve problem in his forearm, Hutchison hasn't pitched in the majors since elbow surgery in 2012, and Happ missed most of 2013 after being hit in the head by a line drive. Happ dimmed his own chances with an awful spring.
Santana, who has topped the 200-inning mark five times, would have given the Blue Jays valuable depth. Without him, there's more chance they'll need starts from touted but untested youngsters like Kyle Drabek, Sean Nolin, and Marcus Stroman.
Still, a confident Dickey insisted Santana would have been more ''bonus'' than ''necessity'' to Toronto. ''I feel like we have what we need,'' he said.

*Rangers-Blue Jays Preview* ===========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Texas (38-57) at Toronto (49-47), 7:07 p.m. EDT

Once owners of a sizable lead in the AL East, the Toronto Blue Jays now must make up a significant deficit and likely won't have slugger Edwin Encarnacion for the rest of this month.

Things are even worse for the Texas Rangers, who try to avoid their longest skid in 11 seasons in Friday night's series opener in Toronto.

The Blue Jays were 38-24 and six games ahead in their division June 6, but are now four games behind Baltimore after losing 23 of 34. A rash of injuries near the end of the first half could hinder Toronto's chances of closing that gap with Encarnacion's strained right quad among the most significant.

Encarnacion remains third in the majors with 26 homers despite going on the disabled list July 7. Adam Lind is expected to miss at least another five weeks with a fractured right foot, and Nolan Reimold (calf), Brett Lawrie (finger) and Maicer Izturis (knee) are among the other hitters on the shelf for Toronto (49-47).

"Everybody wants to pick up the slack, especially when you lose Lawrie, Lind and Encarnacion, all big cogs in the engine of our offense," said R.A. Dickey, Friday's scheduled starter. "Hopefully when the second half rolls around, we'll be able to take a deep breath and whatever it is we have to offer individually, we'll bring that."

Dickey (7-9, 3.82 ERA) experienced some of the effects of that injury-plagued lineup Sunday. He gave up two runs in six innings in Tampa Bay but took a 3-0 defeat. The Blue Jays have plated two runs or fewer in six of their final 10 games before the All-Star break after being held to two or less in one of their previous 10.

The right-hander has a 1.71 ERA in three starts this month but is 1-2 while receiving a combined five runs of support.

Dickey is 2-1 with a 2.75 ERA in three lifetime starts against Texas, the team he pitched for in his first five seasons. He gave up four runs, three hits and three walks in 6 1-3 innings in his lone matchup this season, a 6-2 road loss May 18 that snapped Toronto's six-game win streak in the series.

Texas enters the second half of the season having lost 22 of 25 and eight in a row. The Rangers (38-57), losers in 11 of 12 on the road, have an 8.37 ERA during their skid and haven't dropped nine straight since May 30-June 8, 2003.

"It has been tough," manager Ron Washington told MLB's official website. "Through it all, they have handled it very well. In reality, we'd liked to have handled it better and get more wins. It didn't happen, but I didn't see any letdown."

Having staff ace Yu Darvish (8-5, 2.97) on the mound Friday would appear to help, but he's 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA in his last five starts. The right-hander gave up six runs and a season-high 10 hits in six innings in an 8-4 loss to Houston on July 9.

Darvish is 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA in six career starts against Toronto and has 49 strikeouts in 41 innings. He hasn't earned a win versus the Blue Jays since May 27, 2012, largely because he's received a combined four runs of support in his last four matchups.

Darvish gave up two runs in eight innings and fanned 11 in his only meeting this season, a 2-0 defeat May 16.

Toronto All-Star Jose Bautista is 1 for 15 with seven strikeouts against Darvish while Colby Rasmus, who is mired in a 2-for-23 slump, is 5 for 12.
