| | | CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''
| | TORONTO: TORONTO (AP) - All winter long, the Blue Jays' primary concern was upgrading the starting pitching. The biggest story in Toronto this spring, though, is the one about the free agent arm that got away.
After months of inaction, the Blue Jays thought they'd landed right-hander Ervin Santana on a one-year deal in early March. But when injury concerns flared up in Atlanta, Santana signed a similar deal with the Braves instead.
''I think it's pretty obvious we were involved, it didn't work out. I'm trying to take the high road here,'' general manager Alex Anthopoulos said after Santana turned him down, saying he'd rather pitch in a spacious National League park than face AL East foes in Toronto's hitter-friendly dome.
Anthopoulos, who'd previously come ''extremely close'' to acquiring a starter through trade, must now start the season with almost the same staff he took north last year. Right-handed knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, the 2012 NL Cy Young winner, will be the opening-day starter again, while left-hander Mark Buehrle gets the third slot.
But none of the other three leading contenders, right-handers Brandon Morrow and Drew Hutchison, and left-hander J.A. Happ, have ever pitched 200 innings, and all three are coming off injuries. Morrow was limited to 10 starts last year by a nerve problem in his forearm, Hutchison hasn't pitched in the majors since elbow surgery in 2012, and Happ missed most of 2013 after being hit in the head by a line drive. Happ dimmed his own chances with an awful spring.
Santana, who has topped the 200-inning mark five times, would have given the Blue Jays valuable depth. Without him, there's more chance they'll need starts from touted but untested youngsters like Kyle Drabek, Sean Nolin, and Marcus Stroman.
Still, a confident Dickey insisted Santana would have been more ''bonus'' than ''necessity'' to Toronto. ''I feel like we have what we need,'' he said.

*Indians-Blue Jays Preview* ===========================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Cleveland (18-21) at Toronto (20-20), 7:07 p.m. EDT
Solid production at the plate has helped fuel the Cleveland Indians' current run of success.
Coming off their highest-scoring game of the season, the Indians can record a winning road trip Thursday night against the Toronto Blue Jays.
David Murphy and Lonnie Chisenhall each had five hits and Murphy drove in five runs as Cleveland (19-21) pounded out a season-high 22 hits during its 15-4 rout of Toronto. The last five hitters in the Indians order were a combined 17 of 29 with eight runs scored and 11 RBIs as the visitors rebounded from a 5-4 defeat in Tuesday's series opener.
"That makes you feel good when you're getting contributions all up and down," manager Terry Francona said. "That's the kind of team we have to be."
Cleveland has averaged 6.1 runs and batted .303 while winning six of eight overall. After losing all six to San Francisco and the Los Angeles Angels on their previous trip, the Indians are 3-2 on this six-game trek.
Murphy, 5 for 30 in eight games prior to Wednesday, is batting .440 (11 for 25) with eight RBIs in his last seven against the Blue Jays (20-21).
Chisenhall was 4 for 23 in his previous eight contests.
Though the Indians had plenty to be pleased about Wednesday, they lost outfielders Michael Brantley (back) and his replacement Nyjer Morgan (knee) to injuries. It's uncertain if either will be available Thursday.
Morgan, who wore a brace to immobilize his leg after the game, appeared to suffer the worst of the two injuries.
"We need to see how he shows up in the morning," Francona said.
Cleveland starter Danny Salazar (1-3, 5.65 ERA) allowed one run and two hits while striking out seven in six innings of a 4-2 home victory over Toronto during his initial major league season of 2013.
The right-hander, however, is 0-5 with a 4.26 ERA in nine career road starts.
His most recent outing came at home last Wednesday when he gave up three runs and fanned seven in 6 1-3 innings while not factoring in a 4-3 win over Minnesota.
Adam Lind is 0 for 2 with a strikeout versus Salazar. However, he's 6 for 13 with three doubles in the last four games for the Blue Jays, who are 4-4 on their nine-game homestand.
After allowing three hits and overcoming four walks in five innings of a 3-0 victory at Philadelphia on May 5 in his first 2014 start, Toronto starter J.A. Happ (1-1, 4.63) yielded four runs and seven hits - two homers - over 2 1-3 frames of a 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.
"You try to pitch and you try to execute, and it was certainly frustrating (Saturday)," said Happ, who made his first three appearances in relief after beginning the season on the disabled list with a sore back.
The left-hander allowed one run and four hits in seven innings of a 7-1 victory during his only previous start versus Cleveland in 2012 with Houston.
Cleveland's Asdrubal Cabrera is 0 for 3 versus Happ, but has batted .467 with five RBIs in the last seven games.
