| |  | SEATTLE: HITTING: C/DH JESUS MONTERO was brought over from the Yankees to hit in the heart of the order. At age 22, his offensive potential is scary. OF ICHIRO SUZUKI is entering the twilight of his career, but he might still have another .300 season left. 2B DUSTIN ACKLEY is the kind of line-drive hitter who fits well in Safeco, but he needs to catch up to MLB pitching. 1B JUSTIN SMOAK has disappointed, but he's making strides and has 30-HR upside. OF CASPER WELLS could play everyday. He won't hit for average, but has the power Seattle needs. MIKE CARP figures to at least grab early at-bats against righties. He'll strike out, but has lots of power. OF FRANKLIN GUTIERREZ is out for at least a month with a pectoral injury, but will reclaim his starting gig based on his defense. Seattle would love to see OF MICHAEL SAUNDERS step up to replace Gutierrez, but he's shown no signs of being able to handle MLB pitching. C MIGUEL OLIVO still has solid power, but he's an all-or-nothing hitter. 3B CHONE FIGGINS isn't quite done, but he's close. He'll have to battle line-drive hitting KYLE SEAGER for a job. SS BRENDAN RYAN will stick around for defense, but his bat is barely good enough for a regular gig.
STARTING PITCHING: FELIX HERNANDEZ had a touch of bad luck last year, but he's one of the few pitchers in baseball who's a lock for 200 strikeouts. JASON VARGAS just keeps throwing strikes and letting his defense make plays. He'll get by fine again in spacious Safeco. BLAKE BEAVAN doesn't have a strikeout pitch, but he'll make few mistakes and get some outs thanks to a strong defense. HECTOR NOESI, who also came over from New York with Montero, isn't a big strikeout pitcher, but has good control and is savvy enough to get his shot in Seattle's rotation this year. 37-year-old journeyman KEVIN MILLWOOD will fill out the fifth spot in the rotation after a solid spring. Top prospect DANNY HULTZEN could break into the bigs in 2012. The lefty has the polish of a big leaguer right now, though his ceiling is more good-not-great.
RELIEF PITCHING: Like many rebuilding teams, the Mariners will continue to shop their closer. BRANDON LEAGUE will pick up saves in Seattle, but he's more of a groundball pitcher than a strikeout artist. He'd likely be ticketed for a set-up role elsewhere. If League is traded, the closer role is wide open. SHAWN KELLEY came back from Tommy John surgery late last year and looked as good as ever. If he picks up where he left off last year, he'd be an obvious choice for ninth inning duties. CHANCE RUFFIN, part of the Doug Fister trade, has a strong minor-league track record. He could carve out a big role in this bullpen if he can improve his command. | | TORONTO: HITTING: SS YUNEL ESCOBAR brings a little pop and could score runs in bunches atop a solid lineup. OF JOSE BAUTISTA has simply been the best hitter in baseball the past two seasons. 1B ADAM LIND will have plenty of RBI chances, but his average stinks and he faded late last year. 3B BRETT LAWRIE will be a 30-30 candidate in his prime and he's a solid slugger already. Expect big power numbers but a painful average in C J.P. ARENCIBIA's sophomore season. OF COLBY RASMUS should have his head right this year and could see an uptick in power numbers. 2B KELLY JOHNSON improved his dreadful average after being traded to Toronto. He has great potential as a 20-20 candidate. DH EDWIN ENCARNACION raked at home last season and has the position flexibility to stay in the lineup every day. OF ERIC THAMES will start in left field. Thames has 15-15 potential. OF RAJAI DAVIS' speed makes him worthy of staying in the fourth outfielder role.
STARTING PITCHING: He's not really an ace, but RICKY ROMERO is a solid innings-eater at the front of the Jays' staff. He's a low-risk, low-reward starting pitcher. BRANDON MORROW's talent is intriguing. His mid-90s heat and deceptive slider lead to huge strikeout tallies, but also leads to a lot of gopher balls. Questionable conditioning was an issue for BRETT CECIL last year, as he gave up a whopping 37 HR between the majors and Triple-A. He seemed to straighten things out over the second half of last season. HENDERSON ALVAREZ's performance as a 21-year-old gives him an inside track for a rotation spot. He has intriguing upside. DUSTIN McGOWAN returned in September from a 38-month layoff to put himself in the mix for the rotation. His mid-90s gas is still there, giving him 175-K potential. KYLE DRABEK has great potential, but he was a disaster in 2011. He could not command his promising arsenal of pitches, and broke down mentally at times.
RELIEF PITCHING: SERGIO SANTOS has unhittable stuff, but will have to battle newcomer FRANCISCO CORDERO as Toronto's closer. Cordero's strikeout rate dropped down to a putrid 5.4 K/9 last year, but he showed great command with a stellar 1.02 WHIP. CASEY JANSSEN was Toronto's most improved pitcher in 2011. He has a sinking fastball, a pretty good K rate and performed quite well against the AL East last season. Prospect JOEL CARRENO, a starter in the minors, is a closer-in-waiting. He was impressive out of the pen after a late-August call-up, and averaged better than a strikeout per inning, albeit with shaky control, in the minors. |

Some back and neck pain won't keep R.A. Dickey from making his next start.
The knuckleballer looks to avoid a third straight defeat while trying to help keep the Toronto Blue Jays from a fourth consecutive loss Saturday against the surging Seattle Mariners.
Dickey (2-4, 4.50 ERA) underwent an MRI on Wednesday that revealed mild inflammation in his neck and back. Manager John Gibbons opted to give the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner an extra day of rest.
"The doctors indicated that it's just a matter of time before it goes away," Gibbons told the Blue Jays' official website. "But you keep irritating it when you throw it, but we need him out there and he wants to be out there. Plus, they looked at it and there's nothing serious at all."
The right-hander has allowed seven runs and walked six over 13 innings to lose two straight after he yielded a run and three walks in 12 1-3 innings to win the previous two. Dickey, who gave up three runs on two homers and two other hits in seven innings of a 3-2 loss at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, understands he must work through his health issues.
"If I have to battle it for a while, I'll battle it for a while until it goes away," he said. "It gets marginally better between starts. It's just that when I have to start it breaks down again."
Dickey, who went 5-8 with a 5.21 ERA in 32 games for Seattle in 2008, is 3-1 with a 4.43 ERA in nine appearances against the Mariners. His only start came in 2005 with Texas when he gave up six runs in 5 2-3 innings of an 8-6 victory.
He will try to help the Blue Jays (10-20) find a way to regroup after being outscored 17-2 in three games since Tuesday's 9-7 win over Boston. Toronto managed five hits against Seattle ace Felix Hernandez and closer Tom Wilhelmsen while losing for the seventh time in eight games, 4-0 on Friday.
The Blue Jays have dropped six of seven against the Mariners (14-17) and could have a hard time against Hisashi Iwakuma (2-1, 1.67), who is 0-1 in his last three starts despite allowing two earned runs and striking out 21 in 17 innings.
His teammates have scored one run during that span with the right-hander on the mound.
Iwakuma yielded an unearned run, three hits and fanned eight in six innings of a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. He said a blister that he's had on his middle finger all season was not much of a problem.
"It's a lot better than the last start," Iwakuma told the Mariners' official website. "So hopefully we're making progress from here on."
Iwakuma faced Toronto twice in 2012, including one start when he gave up a leadoff homer to Rajai Davis and three other hits while striking out 13 in eight innings of a 4-1 home win July 30.
Kyle Seager hit a three-run homer for one of his three hits Friday as the Mariners won for the fifth time in six games.
Seager is batting .370 with four home runs and 14 RBIs while hitting safely in 20 of 21 games. He's batted .514 (18 for 35) during a nine-game hitting streak against the Blue Jays.
Teammate Dustin Ackley is batting .395 in his last 12 contests.
