KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA: 2016: 59-103, fifth place.
Manager: Paul Molitor (third season). He's Here: C Jason Castro, RHP Matt Belisle, SS Ehire Adrianza, LHP Craig Breslow. He's Outta Here: 3B Trevor Plouffe, C Kurt Suzuki, LHP Tommy Milone, RHP Pat Light.
Projected lineup: 2B Brian Dozier (.268, 42, 99, 18/20 SBs), RF Max Kepler (.235, 17, 63), CF Byron Buxton (.225, 10 HRs, 38 RBIs, 118 Ks in 298 ABs), 1B Joe Mauer (.261, 11, 49), 3B Miguel Sano (.236, 25, 66, 178 Ks in 437 ABs), DH Kennys Vargas (.230, 10, 20 in 152 ABs), LF Eddie Rosario (.269, 10, 32), C Jason Castro (.210, 11, 32 with Houston), SS Jorge Polanco (.282, 4, 27 in 245 ABs).
Rotation: RH Ervin Santana (7-11, 3.38 ERA, 149 Ks), RH Phil Hughes (1-7, 5.95, 11 HRs, 11 starts), LH Hector Santiago (3-6, 5.58, 13 HRs, 11 starts after trade with Angels), RH Kyle Gibson (6-11, 5.07, 1.561 WHIP), LH Adalberto Mejia (rookie).
Key relievers: RH Brandon Kintzler (0-2, 3.15, 17/20 saves), RH Matt Belisle (0-0, 1.76 in 40 games for Nationals), RH Ryan Pressly (6-7, 3.70, 1 save in 72 games), LH Taylor Rogers (3-1, 3.96, 64 Ks in 57 games), LH Craig Breslow (0-2, 4.50 in 15 games for Marlins). Hot Spot: Starting Rotation. The resuscitation of a team with the worst record in the majors last season must begin with starting pitching that ranked 30th out of 30 in wins (37), ERA (5.39) and strikeouts (655). Hughes, Santiago, Gibson and Berrios will all be counted on to make 2016 the aberration and not the standard. Adding Castro, who has a strong reputation for game calling and pitch framing, probably can't hurt. There's enough depth in the group at least to give the Twins a chance to return to respectability as new baseball chief Derek Falvey continues to try to revamp organizational philosophy and process for the long term. The bullpen appears more vulnerable than the rotation, despite being bolstered by the addition of the veteran Belisle. Three-time All-Star closer Glen Perkins is still working his way back from surgery last year to repair a torn labrum and will likely land on the disabled list to start the season. Kintzler fared well in his place, but doesn't have a track record.
Outlook: The Twins ranked a respectable sixth in the American League in total bases and eighth in OPS despite their abysmal record last year. Buxton's sparkling September, following a second straight frustrating summer, restored his and the club's confidence in the 2012 second overall draft pick. Dozier probably hit his power ceiling in 2016, but if Buxton and Sano can strike out less and get on base more there's the potential in place for a productive offense. Vargas hit his way back into contention for the DH spot with a decent finish to 2016, but the pressure is on him to prove he's worth a spot in the lineup with a strong performance this spring by Park, who struggled badly to adjust to major league pitching in his arrival from South Korea last year.
TEXAS: 2016: 95-67, first place
Manager: Jeff Banister (third season)
Who's new? 1B Mike Napoli, 1B James Loney, INF Will Middlebrooks, RHP Andrew Cashner, RHP Tyson Ross, RHP Mike Hauschild
Who's gone? 1B Mitch Moreland, INF/OF Ian Desmond, OF/DH Carlos Beltran, RHP Derek Holland, RHP Colby Lewis, RHP Shawn Tolleson, RHP Lucas Harrell
Projected lineup: CF Carlos Gomez (.231, 13 HR, 53 RBI, 18 SB in 118 games with Astros and Rangers), DH Shin-Soo Choo (.242, 7, 17, 6 in 48 games), 3B Adrian Beltre (.300, 32, 104), 1B Mike Napoli (.239, 34, 101 with Indians), 2B Rougned Odor (.271, 33, 88, 14 SB), C Jonathan Lucroy (.292, 24, 81 with Brewers and Rangers), RF Nomar Mazara (.266, 20, 64), SS Elvis Andrus (.302, 8, 69, 24 SB), LF Jurickson Profar (.239, 5, 20) or Ryan Rua (.258, 8, 22, 9 SB)
Rotation: LH Cole Hamels (15-5, 3.32 ERA), RH Yu Darvish (7-5, 3.42 in 17 games), LH Martin Perez (10-11, 4.39), RH A.J. Griffin (7-4, 5.07), RH Andrew Cashner (5-11, 5.25 with Padres and Marlins)
Key relievers: RH Sam Dyson (3-2, 2.43, 38/43 SV), RH Matt Bush (7-2, 2.48), RH Jeremy Jeffress (27/28 SV with Brewers and Rangers), RH Tony Barnette (7-3, 2.09), LH Alex Claudio (4-1, 2.79), RH Keone Kela (5-1, 6.09)
Hot spots: Designated hitter and left field. Choo, Napoli and Joey Gallo are all candidates to DH. Gallo, a perennial prospect with prodigious power, can make it interesting by seizing his first-ever Opening Day roster spot. Otherwise Napoli (a first baseman) and Choo (an outfielder) can switch off as needed. Moving Desmond to the outfield was successful enough last year that the Rangers are taking a similar approach with Profar. The oft-injured 24-year-old will try to break camp as a left fielder, platooning with Rua.
Outlook: Coming off back-to-back division titles, the Rangers begin 2017 with a weakened farm system and the footsteps of the Astros and Mariners passing them by ' or at least catching up. There's still a lot to like here. Napoli was a huge bargain on a $6 million contract following his 34-homer season in Cleveland. He'll join Beltre and Odor to form a dangerous middle of the order. Darvish is entering his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, and he and catcher Lucroy are entering their long-awaited walk years. This isn't the deepest roster in the AL but it's capable of winning another division title if its stars can avoid the disabled list.
PREVIEW
Twins ace Santana faces Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Twins didn't exactly light up the Texas sky with their offense in the opener of a three-game series against the Rangers, but Minnesota took advantage of the opportunities presented in finding its way back into the win column.

Minnesota (9-10) won for only the second time in eight games by turning three walks in one inning into three runs with one swing of the bat, and they emerged with a 3-2 win Monday.

The Twins and Rangers face off in the middle game of the series Tuesday night at Globe Life Park.

"We talk about quality at-bats," said Twins second baseman Brian Dozier, who delivered the three-run double in the fifth inning Monday night. "Trying to find ways to create runs and taking advantage of opportunities.

"A team that's obviously been struggling offensively, so knowing a few runs, in a one-run ballgame, that could be the deciding difference. We're not going up trying to walk, but taking advantage."

The Twins will look to take advantage of a start by their ace Tuesday. Right-hander Ervin Santana is 3-0 with a microscopic 0.64 ERA on the season, but he traditionally struggles against Texas.

Despite a 13-11 career record against the Rangers, Santana owns a 5.57 ERA in 31 career starts vs. Texas. He is coming off a no-decision against the Cleveland Indians in which he allowed one run in six innings with three walks and five strikeouts.

Santana leads the Minnesota staff in wins, ERA, innings pitched (28) and strikeouts (20).

Texas counters with Andrew Cashner (0-1, 2.38 ERA), who is making his third start. The 30-year-old right-hander is facing the Twins for first time in his career, one of three clubs he has yet to pitch against.

The Texas native is coming off his first-ever appearance at Globe Life Park. He made quite an impression on his new hometown fans by going six scoreless innings in what turned out to be a 13-inning, 1-0 walk-off win for Texas over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.

Should Cashner put the Rangers in position to win again, new closer Matt Bush will be ready. Bush recorded his first save of the season Sunday, assuming the role left by a struggling and subsequently injured Sam Dyson.

Bush, one of the club's top relievers last season as a rookie, doesn't see much difference in his new role.

"The significance is what everyone else wants to put on it," he said. "For me, it's getting three outs and helping the ballclub win, no matter what. That's what it's all about."

Bush admitted there are differences having to record the final out.

"As the closer, you give up a run or two and you still get that save, you did your job," he said. "Certain innings it's a little bit different. You want to keep the score the way it is and allow the closer to have a little room to work with. Every inning as a relief pitcher late in the game, you want to shut it down and come into the dugout knowing you did your job that day."
