KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants lost Pablo Sandoval to big money and the Boston Red Sox. They missed out paying big money to left-hander Jon Lester, who instead signed with the Chicago Cubs.
While the reigning World Series champions are ready to shed that every-other-year title trend, plenty of people wonder whether general manager Brian Sabean and his staff did enough during the offseason to stay near the top in the talented NL West.
Ask manager Bruce Bochy and his players, and they consider the additions of healthy right-hander Matt Cain and center fielder Angel Pagan back into the mix as a big deal right up there with signing a prized free agent.
And, of course, they have World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner ready to build off his remarkable postseason.
As he addressed the team at the start of spring training, Bochy reminded the Giants that it's hard to win consistently year after year.
''We had a great year last year,'' Bochy said. ''We have to go about our business and get ready for a new year. We'll still enjoy and savor those memories but at the same time it's time for us to get ready. ... Your lock on success is as good as that last game, so we've got to get after it.''
Durable right fielder Hunter Pence is sidelined with a broken left forearm that could keep him out until early May, while left fielder Nori Aoki will join the team he lost to in last year's Fall Classic while with the Kansas City Royals.
Casey McGehee, traded to San Francisco from the Marlins, will take over at third base with Sandoval's departure on a $95 million, five-year contract to Boston. He has said he won't try to replace the formerly popular Kung Fu Panda.
''I feel like we get a lot of flak for not doing anything this offseason,'' shortstop Brandon Crawford said. ''We got Aoki, we got McGehee. We have Cain coming back healthy that I think a lot of people forget. We've got Pagan coming back healthy. It's almost like getting four new guys.''
Bochy joked to Aoki - whom he calls ''a catalyst'' - about hitting 30 home runs. The speedy Japanese outfielder responded, ''24.''
''We're playing for a championship,'' Aoki said. ''It's a passionate group of guys.''
Here are some things to look for with the Giants, who have captured three World Series titles in the past five years:
BUMGARNER'S NEXT STEP: Bumgarner threw 270 innings, including 21 with two wins and a save in the World Series.
He went 4-1 during the postseason following an 18-10 regular season. From his four-hit, 10-strikeout gem that got things started in an 8-0 wild-card win at Pittsburgh all the way through his brilliant relief outing in Game 7 of the World Series to beat the Royals, Bumgarner became one of the postseason's best pitchers ever.
''I think he'll be comfortable in his skin,'' pitching coach Dave Righetti said.
HUDSON'S HURRAH: This is it for Tim Hudson, who has said he will retire after his 17th major league season.
He won his first championship last year, advancing out of the first round for the first time.
Now, the 39-year-old pitcher is bouncing back from surgery to remove bone spurs from his right ankle, the same one he injured during the 2013 season with Atlanta that sidelined him for the final two months.
PAGAN'S BALKY BACK: Pagan arrived at spring training declaring himself pain-free for the first time in years following back surgery.
Despite some flare-ups, Pagan and the Giants are counting on a full season. He joked to Bochy that he's ready to play 160 games.
Pagan played in only 96 last season and 71 in 2013 because of injuries.
''It's a new slate for everybody, including him,'' Bochy said.
RELIABLE BULLPEN: San Francisco's bullpen is lined up again - Jeremy Affeldt, Javier Lopez, Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla. Each of these pitchers has been part of all three title teams.
Casilla became closer after Romo struggled in June, though Bochy knows he can mix and match with these guys. Then, there's Yusmeiro Petit, who showed he can start or relieve with equal efficiency.
''You want to remind them to take advantage of what you have,'' Bochy said. ''We've got a great group here and we don't ever want to lose out on this opportunity.''
TEXAS: When Yu Darvish pitched only one inning this spring before season-ending elbow surgery, the Texas Rangers were already off to an ominous start.
The Rangers lost their ace even before what they are still hoping will be a comeback season.
''There is no way to spin that, other than it's a tough deal for us. He's one of the best pitchers in the game,'' general manager Jon Daniels said this spring. ''That being said, it's one guy. It's not 17. Good teams and good organizations have had similar news at similar times before and found a way. That's got to be our mentality.''
Texas had 22 different players spend time on the disabled list last season, including Darvish missing the final seven weeks with elbow inflammation before needing Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery this spring.
The aching result for the Rangers was the American League's worst record (67-95) and their most losses since 1985, ending an impressive four-year run of 90-win seasons with their only two World Series appearances (2010-11).
Darvish was 10-7 and an All-Star again before getting sidelined last season.
As for the top of the rotation without him, the January trade to get local pitcher Yovani Gallardo proved even more important. Gallardo, who can be a free agent after this season, started the last five season openers for Milwaukee.
Derek Holland, who didn't pitch until September last season after knee surgery, had a strong finish. Shoulder soreness slowed the left-hander this spring, but that likely set him up to start the home opener April 10 against Houston, in the fifth game of the season.
Also among the injured in 2014 were slugger Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo, the big offensive additions before last season.
Fielder had missed only one game the previous five seasons with Detroit and Milwaukee before being limited to only 42 games and three home runs in his Rangers debut because a herniated disk in his neck that required surgery. Choo played 123 games, but his on-base percentage dipped from .423 in 2013 for Cincinnati to .340 before operations late last season for a bone spur in his left elbow and torn cartilage in his left ankle.
''There's no telling what this ballclub can do,'' new manager Jeff Banister said. ''They've yet to have an opportunity to play together. Let's hope they get a really strong shot of playing together for 162-plus (games).''
Here are a few things to know about the Rangers, who open the season April 6 at Oakland:
CLOSING TIME: Neftali Feliz is back in his World Series role for the Rangers as their closer after an ill-fated and injury-plagued attempt to be a starter. The right-hander was 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA in eight games (seven starts) in 2012 before Tommy John surgery. Feliz was 2-1 with 13 saves in 14 chances with a 1.99 ERA in 30 relief appearances after rejoining the Rangers last July, just before Joakim Soria was traded.
BELTRE'S IMPACT: Third baseman Adrian Beltre is going into his 17th major league season, his fifth with the Rangers and signed through next season. ''He's the heart and soul of this club,'' Banister said. ''A shining light in the storm, that's what he was last year. ... Do yourself a favor and watch that last at-bat he put together in 2014.'' Determined not to be the final out of the season, Beltre went from an 0-2 count to getting a single on the third straight slider thrown after that.
LEFT OF CENTER: With pretty much every other defensive position set, Jake Smolinski and Ryan Ruo entered spring as candidates in left field. Both showed promising glimpses in short stints in their major league debuts the second half of last season. Ryan Ludwick, who made his major league debut with Texas in 2002 and played for five other teams the past decade, was a non-roster invitee who could play left. Michael Choice, who got 35 of his 55 outfield starts in left last year, was the early man out when optioned to the minors in mid-March. Choo moves from left to right after Alex Rios departed in free agency.
MISSING WORK: The 26 different DL stints for the Rangers last season amounted to 2,281 days lost. That was 833 more than Arizona, who had the second most, and more than double any other American League team.

*Giants-Rangers Preview* ========================

San Francisco (56-45) at Texas (49-52), 8:05 p.m. EDT

Nick Martinez is scheduled to start Friday night, though Texas Rangers fans are more eagerly anticipating who could follow him.

That's because the Rangers are close to obtaining Cole Hamels, who will start for them this weekend if he comes over from Philadelphia.

The trade speculation has made Martinez's outing a bit of an afterthought as the Rangers welcome the San Francisco Giants to Arlington for the first time since the 2010 World Series for this three-game set.

Texas (49-52) is close to finalizing a deal with Philadelphia to acquire Hamels and reliever Jake Diekman for left-hander Matt Harrison and a package of top prospects. No deal was announced Thursday night, though players for both teams were talking as if it was already finished with Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus saying the addition of Hamels will be a "real plus."

Hamels, who hasn't pitched since his 13-strikeout, no-hitter Saturday over the Chicago Cubs, is scheduled to start Friday for the Phillies. Harrison is slated to pitch in the middle game of this series.

When asked if Martinez was a certainty to start Friday night, manager Jeff Bannister said, "As we sit right now."

There's good reason for Texas fans to look forward to Saturday - if that's when Hamels does make his debut - since Martinez (5-6, 4.08 ERA) has struggled in two starts since getting recalled from Triple-A Round Rock, going 0-1 with an 11.00 ERA.

The Rangers have dropped the last six starts by the right-hander, who is 0-4 with a 7.01 ERA in that span. Martinez has never faced the Giants.

San Francisco (56-45) no doubt has fond memories of Arlington, where it won two of three games in the 2010 World Series to begin its current run of three championships in five years.

Madison Bumgarner (11-5, 3.16) began developing his reputation as a clutch postseason pitcher with eight innings of three-hit ball in Game 4 of that series in a 4-0 road victory. That's his only career start against Texas.

The left-hander has posted a 2.04 ERA in winning three straight outings after limiting Oakland to one run over seven innings in Saturday's 2-1 victory.

He'll eventually be joined in the rotation by Mike Leake, who was acquired from Cincinnati for a pair of prospects late Thursday.

The Giants expect two of their top hitters to return Friday. Joe Panik has missed the last two games with back stiffness and Buster Posey sat out Wednesday's 5-0 victory over Milwaukee for rest.

"They've been going hard since the All-Star break," manager Bruce Bochy said. "I'm trying to keep these guys as fresh as I can."

Bochy's club has won 13 of 15 as it starts a 10-game trip. The Giants are an NL-best 9-3 in interleague games.

Posey is fourth in the majors with a .413 average in interleague play. Matt Duffy is tied for sixth at .400 and tied for fourth with 14 RBIs.

Josh Hamilton delivered a game-ending RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning in Thursday's 7-6 victory over the New York Yankees as Texas earned a four-game split. He had a three-run homer in the first.

Hamilton, Andrus and Mitch Moreland are the only current Rangers hitters who faced Bumgarner in the World Series, combining to go 1 for 8.

Texas won two of three at San Francisco when these teams met in 2012. The Giants have captured 16 of 25 regular-season meetings between the teams that played baseball's first interleague game June 12, 1997, in Arlington.
