KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is gone, the final remaining link to the New York Yankees' last dynasty. He left behind a team in transition, that failed to make the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time in a generation and is beset with an older core coming off injuries.
Alex Rodriguez's return from a season-long drug suspension is the most interesting aspect of the Yankees, who enter the season with a health-challenged rotation, rebuilt bullpen and lineup that was among the least potent in the American League last year.
''I think we've added a lot of good young arms,'' manager Joe Girardi said. ''Added some good young players, as well. I think we've really seen an improvement in our young minor league players and the impact they are capable of having. I think we will continue to see that for years to come.''
If the Yankees founder, young players could be given more of a chance. Top prospects include pitcher Luis Severino, infielders Jose Pirela and Rob Refsnyder, and outfielder Aaron Judge.
But first, many of the old, beaten-up players will be given a chance to show they have something left.
Left fielder Brett Gardner (abdomen) and right fielder Carlos Beltran (elbow) return from surgery, and Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) missed a significant stretch of spring training. First baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist) hit .216 last year, 143rd among 148 major league qualifiers in his return from an injury that sidelined him for most of 2013.
After signing a big-money deal with the Yankees, catcher Brian McCann was hitting just .209 in May before improving in the second half to finish at .232. Third baseman Chase Headley, acquired from San Diego in July, was given a new contract by the Yankees because they have no confidence in A-Rod's ability to play the field. New York also re-signed Stephen Drew under the theory he can't be as bad as he was in 2014.
Didi Gregorius, obtained from Arizona in a trade, is the primary offensive newcomer and replaces Jeter at shortstop. Left-handed-hitting Garrett Jones hopes to earn at-bats.
''Jeter is still Jeter. Everything that everybody is going to talk about is Jeter,'' Gregorius said. ''But for me - I'm learning and I'm there just to play the game, so just trying to focus on the game and trying to win every game, that's all I can say, not worrying about what's going on around.''
LIGHTNING ROD: The three-time AL MVP, who turns 40 on July 27, has not played a full season since 2007 because the suspension, operations on both hips and other injuries. New York owes him $61 million over the final three seasons of his contract, so he will be given a chance to earn at-bats as a DH, especially against left-handed starters.
RICKETY ROTATION: Masahiro Tanaka missed 2 1/2 months in his first season because of a small elbow ligament tear the Yankees say didn't need surgery. CC Sabathia, limited to eight starts last year, has to show he can pitch effectively with reduced velocity. Michael Pineda, back from shoulder surgery, had a 1.89 ERA in 13 starts last year but missed a long stretch because of the shoulder. New York hopes hard-throwing Nathan Eovaldi can learn to be effective after his acquisition from Miami. With Chris Capuano on the DL and Ivan Nova not expected back from Tommy John surgery until May or June, Adam Warren was the leading contender for fifth starter.
BULLPEN: A strong point last year, the Yankees rebuilt the `pen. David Robertson was allowed to leave for the Chicago White Sox, and David Phelps, Shawn Kelley and Shane Greene were traded. Lefty Andrew Miller and Scott Baker were signed, and Justin Wilson and Chris Martin acquired in trades. Miller and Dellin Betances competed in spring training to replace Robertson as closer.
HOPS: The Yankees are sharing their ballpark with Major League Soccer's expansion New York City team, and Teixeira complained before the soccer team's home opener that the infield would get torn up, leading to bad hops.
TEXAS: When Yu Darvish pitched only one inning this spring before season-ending elbow surgery, the Texas Rangers were already off to an ominous start.
The Rangers lost their ace even before what they are still hoping will be a comeback season.
''There is no way to spin that, other than it's a tough deal for us. He's one of the best pitchers in the game,'' general manager Jon Daniels said this spring. ''That being said, it's one guy. It's not 17. Good teams and good organizations have had similar news at similar times before and found a way. That's got to be our mentality.''
Texas had 22 different players spend time on the disabled list last season, including Darvish missing the final seven weeks with elbow inflammation before needing Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery this spring.
The aching result for the Rangers was the American League's worst record (67-95) and their most losses since 1985, ending an impressive four-year run of 90-win seasons with their only two World Series appearances (2010-11).
Darvish was 10-7 and an All-Star again before getting sidelined last season.
As for the top of the rotation without him, the January trade to get local pitcher Yovani Gallardo proved even more important. Gallardo, who can be a free agent after this season, started the last five season openers for Milwaukee.
Derek Holland, who didn't pitch until September last season after knee surgery, had a strong finish. Shoulder soreness slowed the left-hander this spring, but that likely set him up to start the home opener April 10 against Houston, in the fifth game of the season.
Also among the injured in 2014 were slugger Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo, the big offensive additions before last season.
Fielder had missed only one game the previous five seasons with Detroit and Milwaukee before being limited to only 42 games and three home runs in his Rangers debut because a herniated disk in his neck that required surgery. Choo played 123 games, but his on-base percentage dipped from .423 in 2013 for Cincinnati to .340 before operations late last season for a bone spur in his left elbow and torn cartilage in his left ankle.
''There's no telling what this ballclub can do,'' new manager Jeff Banister said. ''They've yet to have an opportunity to play together. Let's hope they get a really strong shot of playing together for 162-plus (games).''
Here are a few things to know about the Rangers, who open the season April 6 at Oakland:
CLOSING TIME: Neftali Feliz is back in his World Series role for the Rangers as their closer after an ill-fated and injury-plagued attempt to be a starter. The right-hander was 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA in eight games (seven starts) in 2012 before Tommy John surgery. Feliz was 2-1 with 13 saves in 14 chances with a 1.99 ERA in 30 relief appearances after rejoining the Rangers last July, just before Joakim Soria was traded.
BELTRE'S IMPACT: Third baseman Adrian Beltre is going into his 17th major league season, his fifth with the Rangers and signed through next season. ''He's the heart and soul of this club,'' Banister said. ''A shining light in the storm, that's what he was last year. ... Do yourself a favor and watch that last at-bat he put together in 2014.'' Determined not to be the final out of the season, Beltre went from an 0-2 count to getting a single on the third straight slider thrown after that.
LEFT OF CENTER: With pretty much every other defensive position set, Jake Smolinski and Ryan Ruo entered spring as candidates in left field. Both showed promising glimpses in short stints in their major league debuts the second half of last season. Ryan Ludwick, who made his major league debut with Texas in 2002 and played for five other teams the past decade, was a non-roster invitee who could play left. Michael Choice, who got 35 of his 55 outfield starts in left last year, was the early man out when optioned to the minors in mid-March. Choo moves from left to right after Alex Rios departed in free agency.
MISSING WORK: The 26 different DL stints for the Rangers last season amounted to 2,281 days lost. That was 833 more than Arizona, who had the second most, and more than double any other American League team.

*Yankees-Rangers Preview* =========================

New York (56-42) at Texas (47-51), 8:05 p.m. EDT

The New York Yankees are determined to give Masahiro Tanaka extra rest every time they can.

The Yankees have won five straight outings by Tanaka entering his first against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night as these teams continue their four-game set in Arlington.

New York (57-42) adjusted its rotation for this series, giving Chris Capuano a spot start Tuesday to give Tanaka (7-3, 3.64 ERA) and Michael Pineda extra rest. Since Tanaka returned June 3 from a stint on the disabled list with a strained right forearm, he has pitched with at least five days' rest in every outing - going 5-2 with a 3.79 ERA in nine.

The right-hander has posted a 2.82 ERA in winning three straight starts, yielding three runs - all on solo homers - over 7 2-3 innings in last Thursday's 9-3 victory over Baltimore. His opponents are batting .152 with 20 strikeouts in the last three games.

"The past three games, it's been gradually getting better," he said through an interpreter.

Tanaka has never faced any of the Rangers hitters.

Texas (47-52) has started left-handers in the first two games of this series to disastrous results, with New York totaling 14 runs off those starters. The Rangers will have right-handers on the mound in the last two games, beginning with Colby Lewis (10-4, 4.49).

Lewis has pitched into the eighth inning in capturing both starts since the All-Star break, allowing two runs over 7 2-3 innings with a season-high nine strikeouts in Friday's 4-2 victory at the Los Angeles Angels.

The right-hander is 2-3 with a 5.55 ERA in six starts against the Yankees, allowing five runs in 6 2-3 innings as he got credit for a 10-9 road victory May 22.

Didi Gregorius homered against him in that game and continued to torment the Rangers in Tuesday's 21-5 rout by going 4 for 5 with three RBIs. He is 7 for 9 with seven RBIs in this series and 15 for 36 with four homers and 14 RBIs in nine career games versus Texas.

The Yankees scored 11 runs in the second inning to erase a 5-0 deficit, and Chris Young's grand slam in the third opened up a 15-5 advantage.

"I've seen a snowman (8) but I've never seen 11 (runs). Everybody was swinging the bats well, but it's still big-league pitching," left fielder Brett Gardner said. "When you're down five, if you can scratch one across that's good, but more is even better. It speaks to the character of this team to come back and answer that quickly."

Young was 3 for 6 with a career-high five RBIs while Gardner was 3 for 4 with three walks, a career-high five runs scored and three RBIs.

The bottom third of the New York lineup is 15 for 28 with 12 RBIs in this series.

Young will likely sit Wednesday since he's a .185 hitter against right-handers. Carlos Beltran could return to the lineup in his place.

Texas has lost three straight and 12 of 13 at home, where it is a major league-worst 16-28. The Rangers committed three errors and were held hitless after they had three in the first inning.

"My overall take is it's not the way we want to play the game of baseball," manager Jeff Banister said.

Josh Hamilton sat out Tuesday and is expected back in the lineup.
