| | | HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - Coming off three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros are confident they'll be better this year.
How much? They aren't putting a number on that. But after setting a franchise record with a whopping 111 defeats, they have a simple target.
''It's our goal to be the most improved team in major league baseball (and) I believe ... we have the group together and we can actually accomplish that,'' second-year manager Bo Porter said.
There are several reasons why the Astros are certain they can improve. They brought in several established players this offseason to pair with the many young players who got their first significant playing time last season. They also could get some reinforcements soon from top prospects who are inching closer to being major league ready.
General manager Jeff Luhnow's rebuilding plan has already boosted Houston's minor league system from the worst in baseball to one of the best. He expects that work to start paying dividends this season in the majors.
''We have a young team. We're still going to make some mistakes,'' he said. ''Our young players have improved but still need some development. We brought in some veterans to help stabilize the team this year. We're going to see a big improvement as a result of those two dynamics.''
| | TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''

*Astros-Rangers Preview* ========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Houston (68-87) at Texas (61-93), 8:05 p.m. EDT
Jose Altuve is giving Houston Astros fans a reason to keep paying attention near the end of another losing campaign.
A late-season surge and Derek Holland's sparkling return from the disabled list are providing at least some solace for the Texas Rangers during the club's worst season in nearly 30 years.
While Altuve continues his push to become the Astros' first batting champion, Holland looks for another superb start Monday night while helping his club officially avoid 100 losses.
Altuve became the first MLB player with 220 or more hits in a season since Ichiro Suzuki in 2009 by collecting two in an 8-3 win over the Mariners on Sunday. He already owns the Astros' single-season record and has the most for a second baseman since Charlie Gehringer's 227 in 1936.
Altuve has boosted his average to .345, 11 points ahead of Detroit's Victor Martinez, by going 22 for 47 (.468) in his last 11 games with multiple hits in all but one contest.
"He's the catalyst of the ballclub," interim manager Tom Lawless said. "When he gets on things happen. He's got ... 220 hits and that's really unheard of."
Altuve has produced that memorable season while the Astros (69-87) have endured a sixth consecutive losing one. Unlike its previous three campaigns, though, Houston won't lose 100 games and could avoid 90 by going at least 4-2.
The Rangers (62-93) will try to keep their rivals from moving closer to that 73rd win while earning their ninth in 10 games. Texas played spoiler to Atlanta and Oakland before taking two of three from AL West champion Los Angeles this weekend.
The Rangers' 2-1 win Sunday and Arizona's 8-3 loss in Colorado pushed the Diamondbacks to the worst record in the majors.
"We're trying to win every game from here on out," interim manager Tim Bogar said. "If we do that, we're definitely not going to have (MLB's) worst record."
Holland (1-0, 0.99 ERA) will try to deliver another victory in his fifth start since returning from left knee surgery. The left-hander yielded one run, four hits and walked his first three batters this season in Oakland on Wednesday but did not get a decision in a 6-1 victory.
Holland went 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA in three starts against Houston last season and pitched a six-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 12-0 victory Sept. 23.
The Rangers are set to finish with their most losses since going 62-99 in 1985 but can guarantee they won't lose 100 games for the first time since 1973 with one more win.
They'll also likely end the Astros' string of three consecutive last-place finishes. With a 6 1/2-game lead over Texas, Houston can assure it will finish fourth with one more victory.
The Astros, 11-5 in the season series, have won 10 of the last 12 matchups and produced a three-game sweep in Texas from July 7-9.
Nick Tropeano (1-1, 2.70) will make his third major league start. The right-hander earned a 5-2 win in Seattle in his debut Sept. 10 but took a 4-2 loss to Cleveland on Tuesday by allowing two runs - one earned - in five innings.
Altuve, batting .381 against the Rangers this season, went 2 for 8 versus Holland in 2013. He's hitting .422 against left-handers in 2014.
