KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.
TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''

*Yankees-Rangers Preview* =========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

New York (54-51) at Texas (42-64), 8:05 p.m. EDT

No one is expected to step up and fill the void in the New York Yankees' starting rotation created by the injury to Masahiro Tanaka.

That's because Brandon McCarthy seems to have already taken care of it.

Entering his fourth start since being acquired July 6, McCarthy will try to keep rolling and improve his fortunes against one of his former clubs Tuesday night as the Yankees look to avoid a series loss against the pitiful Texas Rangers.

While Tanaka went 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA and .185 opponent average through his first three starts, McCarthy (2-0, 1.45 ERA) has been as effective - though a bit more hittable with a .260 opponent average.

He's held each of his opponents to one earned run, including Texas in Thursday's 4-2 victory. The right-hander surrendered four hits with five strikeouts over six innings, giving him a 4-0 record with a 1.78 ERA in his last five starts overall.

"It's a nice feeling," McCarthy told MLB's official website. "It's the opposite of how I felt earlier this year, where I was a burden on my team. I was a guy that was holding things up. To come here and feel good about myself again, to contribute to a playoff race, is a great feeling."

Along with the change of leagues has come added run support. With Arizona, McCarthy received an average of 3.20 runs, which ranked seventh lowest in baseball before the trade. Thus far in New York, his RSA is 6.75, and while that might be easing some of the pressure, he's enjoying the bigger stage and higher stakes as the Yankees try to track down Baltimore and Toronto in the AL East.

"I was at a point where I really felt like I wanted more pressure, more something," McCarthy said. "Kind of the fight or flight thing; I've always responded well to it. To get into a situation now where that's the case - especially doing it for a team like the Yankees - it's ramped up all the way."

McCarthy's visits to Texas since leaving in free agency after the 2010 season have been quite rough with a 0-2 record and 7.65 ERA in four starts. Adrian Beltre is batting .389 in 36 at-bats against McCarthy, but Alex Rios is just 1 for 19.

The Yankees (54-51) started the series with a 4-2 loss Monday that was their third straight and dropped them 4 1/2 games behind the Orioles. It also soured Derek Jeter's eclipsing of Carl Yastrzemski for seventh place on the all-time hits list.

Jeter and Brett Gardner each collected three hits, and Gardner left the yard twice for the first time in his career. Jeter's night boosted his average to .278, his highest since entering April 27 at .292.

Texas (42-64) is in position to win back-to-back contests for the first time since June 27-28, but it'll take ending a seven-game skid in contests Nick Martinez has started.

Martinez (1-6, 4.73) is winless in eight starts with a 0-5 record and 6.98 ERA, though he probably deserved better in Tuesday's 2-1 loss in New York. The right-hander held the Yankees to three hits in 5 1-3 scoreless innings after coming off the disabled list.

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira played for the first time in eight games and gathered a pinch-hit single. After missing a week because of a back strain, the former Ranger hopes to be back in the starting lineup Tuesday.

Third baseman Chase Headley has hit safely in each of his seven games with New York and has a 10-game streak overall. He's batting .337 in his last 20.
