KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.
TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''

*Yankees-Rangers Preview* =========================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer

New York (54-49) at Texas (41-63), 8:05 p.m. EDT

Facing the club with baseball's worst record would seem to offer a major advantage for the New York Yankees, who are looking to improve their chances for a playoff berth.

Manager Joe Girardi doesn't view any opponent as a pushover, though, especially with the Texas Rangers sending Yu Darvish to the mound.

The Yankees look to avoid a third straight defeat Monday night as they face Darvish and the slumping Rangers in the opener of a three-game set in Texas.

New York (54-50) trails Baltimore by four games for the AL East lead and Toronto by one for the league's second wild-card spot after falling 5-4 to the Blue Jays on Sunday.

Chase Headley hit his first homer since being acquired from San Diego on Tuesday, but the Yankees dropped the final two games of the series after winning seven of their previous eight overall.

"It's always a disappointment to lose," Derek Jeter said. "We don't go into the last two days worried about what we did in the last eight. You try to win every day."

With the stretch run nearing and playoff races heating up, New York will take any advantage it can to keep pace. Though the Rangers (41-64) are having their troubles, Girardi still is approaching this series knowing that his team has to perform.

"People talk about when you're playing teams that are struggling, 'Is this a chance for you to move up?'" Girardi told MLB's official website. "Yeah, but you don't know how well they'll be playing when you get there. You could say that we were struggling a little bit. You want to try to take advantage of certain situations, but it really comes down to you have to outplay the other team.

"If you don't play well, no matter who you're playing, you're not going to win."

That's usually true when opponents face Darvish (9-6, 2.92 ERA), though he hasn't had his best stuff lately. He took the loss in Wednesday's rain-shortened, 2-1 loss to the Yankees in five innings, allowing two runs in 4 1-3. The right-hander fell to 1-2 with a 5.32 ERA over his last four outings.

"I try not to think about it and just want to go deep in the game as much as possible," Darvish said.

Darvish will get another crack at the Yankees, against whom he's 2-1 with a 1.85 ERA in four career starts.

David Phelps opposed Darvish in last week's contest, and he'll get the ball again looking to continue his solid stretch. Phelps (5-4, 3.77) is 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA over his last five outings, giving up two or fewer earned runs in each start.

The right-hander allowed one run in five innings against the Rangers, but he's just 1-3 with a 4.36 ERA in nine starts on the road with the Yankees dropping eight of them.

He'll face a Texas team that has scored only 12 runs while losing five of six. It fell 9-3 to Oakland on Sunday despite a two-run homer from Adam Rosales and a solo shot from Adrian Beltre.

Former Ranger Mark Teixeira has missed the last seven games with a left lat strain, but Girardi is hoping he can return at some point during this series.

"We'll re-evaluate where he is (Monday)," Girardi said. "Hopefully, he's a player for us pretty soon here."
