KEY GAME INFORMATION
DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - When Justin Verlander takes the mound for Detroit on opening day, maybe then the Tigers will be able to enjoy a much-needed sense of normalcy.
As an offseason of drama gave way to spring training injuries, it was easy to forget the Tigers still have one of the most talented rosters in baseball. Sure, there have been some early problems for new manager Brad Ausmus to address, Detroit still figures to be the favorite to win its fourth consecutive AL Central title.
''We have a new look this year,'' outfielder Torii Hunter said. ''Little bit more speed and we'll miss the big man, but we'll score some runs.''
The ''big man'' is Prince Fielder, whom the Tigers traded to Texas in a blockbuster deal that brought second baseman Ian Kinsler to Detroit. That move gave the Tigers more financial flexibility, although they weren't all that aggressive in pursuing free agents. Detroit did sign Joe Nathan to replace departed closer Joaquin Benoit.
The Tigers also traded right-hander Doug Fister to Washington.
Lately, the focus has been on right-hander Max Scherzer, who enters his final season before free agency after winning the Cy Young Award in 2013. Negotiations with the Tigers on a long-term deal have stalled.
''They respect where I'm at. I respect where they're at, and we'll revisit this after the season,'' Scherzer said. ''I still want to be in Detroit. I love this clubhouse and everything about it. There's been a history of this team signing free agents so hopefully I'll be a part of that history as well.''
But right now Scherzer's future is uncertain, and with Hunter and Victor Martinez in the final season of their contracts, it's hard to say what Detroit's 2015 roster will look like.
So the Tigers may never have a better chance to win a World Series with this group than right now.
TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''

*Tigers-Rangers Preview* ========================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer

Detroit (42-32) at Texas (35-42), 8:05 p.m. EDT

The first-place Detroit Tigers are again surging behind a red-hot offense led by their unrelated Martinez duo.

Another Martinez may be the answer to ending their current tear.

Nick Martinez takes the mound for Texas looking to shut down the visiting Tigers for the second time this season and help the Rangers avoid losing eight straight for the first time in nearly nine years.

Detroit (42-32) is averaging 6.5 runs while winning its last six games - its third streak of at least that many this season. The Tigers have won the first five on a nine-game trip after beating the Rangers 8-6 on Wednesday.

Ian Kinsler, hitting .419 over his last 11 games, had two hits after homering against his former team in Tuesday's opener, and Miguel Cabrera drove in a pair of runs.

Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez homered on consecutive pitches from different Texas pitchers in the fifth and finished with two RBIs apiece.

"Vic's been swinging the bat well all year, right-handed, left-handed, you take your pick," manager Brad Ausmus said. "The thing about J.D. is his power. When he gets hot, the ball is going to travel."

J.D. Martinez is hitting .411 with six homers during a 14-game hitting streak.

"He's been swinging the bat great, and he's a guy that has a lot of power," Victor, hitting .330 on the season, said of J.D. "He's getting a chance to play more often, and he's been doing a lot of damage."

Detroit, which leads the AL with a .276 batting average, didn't have nearly as much success the first time it faced Martinez (1-4, 4.22 ERA) on May 24.

The rookie right-hander picked up his first major league win in that contest, giving up one run in six innings of a 12-2 victory. He went 0-2 with a 11.08 ERA in three subsequent starts but has improved over his last two.

After allowing two runs in six innings of a 5-1 loss to Seattle on June 15, Martinez gave up two runs and three hits in seven innings of the Rangers' 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.

"He was great," manager Ron Washington said. "He was moving the ball around and never really gave them too many pitches in the same spot consecutively. He used his changeup well and spotted his curveball and his fastball."

Martinez now looks to help the Rangers (35-42) avoid their longest losing streak since Aug. 8-16, 2005. Adrian Beltre is 7 for 8 in the series and drove in two runs Wednesday, but Texas has dropped six of seven at home.

"It's definitely hard to comprehend a seven-game losing streak, but it is what it is," Washington said. "We knew why. We've got to score some runs, and we've got to pitch better."

Beltre is hitting .405 over his last 20, and he's 8 for 19 in his career against Rick Porcello, who had a rough outing while opposing Martinez last month.

Porcello (9-4, 3.76) gave up eight runs and 12 hits - including a homer to Beltre - over 5 1-3 innings in that defeat, beginning a tough stretch in which he went 1-3 with a 6.00 ERA over five starts.

The right-hander ended that slump Friday, giving up six hits in six scoreless innings of a 6-4 win over Cleveland.

Porcello may have a difficult time building off that outing, though, as he's 3-4 with a 7.41 ERA in seven career starts against the Rangers.
