| |  | SEATTLE: SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano was just the start. The Seattle Mariners didn't stop with one major splash in trying to catch up with the best in the AL West.
Even so, there remain many questions about whether Seattle's additions as a whole can improve a team coming off a 71-win season.
The moves made by Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik were in hopes of improving the Mariners and solidifying his own future after a shaky offseason that started with Eric Wedge's decision not to return as manager.
Lloyd McClendon is getting his second shot as a major league manager nine years after he was last leading a club in Pittsburgh. Along with Cano, Seattle signed outfielder Corey Hart, closer Fernando Rodney and traded for designated hitter Logan Morrison.
Despite those moves, there remain concerns about the depth of Seattle's rotation beyond ace Felix Hernandez and whether players the Mariners have been waiting for to finally pop can establish themselves as reliable, everyday starters.
Yet the Mariners believe they will be competitive in one of baseball's toughest divisions.
''We're ready to win. That's what it's all about,'' Hernandez said. ''We're ready to win ballgames in Seattle. We're ready to be in the playoffs, we're ready to do that.''
| | TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''

Colby Lewis is ready to rejoin the Texas Rangers rotation after 21 months and two operations, including an unprecedented hip procedure for a major league pitcher.
The right-hander is scheduled to take the mound Monday night at home for the opener of this three-game series against the Seattle Mariners.
"I'm excited to get back, I'm excited for the opportunity to play this game, the opportunity for the Rangers to give me that chance to go out and play, and ultimately continue my career a little bit longer," Lewis said Sunday. "Like my wife said, she wasn't ready for me to be done. So it was extra motivation to get back out there."
His last start for the Rangers (6-6) was July 18, 2012, before surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow.
While still rehabbing from the elbow surgery, Lewis had right hip resurfacing surgery last August, a procedure to remove bone spurs without a full hip replacement. The 34-year-old Lewis will be the first known major league pitcher to come back after such an operation.
"I kind of feel like anybody, this is all we ever know is playing sports," Lewis said. "There would be a multiple number of guys in (the clubhouse) that if they had the same hip surgery, they'd want to try to be able to make a comeback. So I just happen to be the first guy. So I just want to go out there, perform and put my team in a spot to win, and have a good time doing it."
Lewis, who had long pitched through the hip issues, was 6-6 with a 3.43 ERA in 16 starts in 2012 before his elbow surgery. Two months after that, the Rangers gave him a $2 million, one-year extension for 2013, and he came to spring training this year as a non-roster invitee.
"I don't mean this in a mean way, but he's the grandfather of our pitching staff. He's the leader," manager Ron Washington said. "We were looking for issues in spring training, never happened. Looking for issues in rehab. Never happened. So he feels good about it."
Lewis is 4-0 with a 2.45 ERA in six starts against Seattle in Arlington.
The Mariners (6-5) will counter with Cuban rookie Roenis Elias (0-1, 2.70 ERA), who has turned in two solid five-inning stints before his first look at Texas. The left-hander, who never pitched above Double-A last season, made his only mistake in Wednesday's 2-0 road loss to the Los Angeles Angels on a two-run homer by Albert Pujols.
"I've got to keep pitches down in the major leagues," Elias said through an interpreter. "If you don't they are not forgiving."
An unfamiliar pitcher could present yet another challenge to Prince Fielder, who finished 0 for 3 in Sunday's 1-0 win over Houston to drop his average to .149 through his first 12 games with the Rangers.
Seattle's Robinson Cano is still searching for his first homer with his new team and hasn't gone deep in his last 14 games against Texas.
The Mariners enter in a 17-inning scoreless drought after Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Oakland.
The Rangers won 12 of 19 meetings a season ago.
