KEY GAME INFORMATION
CINCINNATI: HITTING: 2B BRANDON PHILLIPS sparked the Reds offense after moving to the top of the order. But his free-swinging makes him a bad fit there. SS ZACK COZART played in only 11 games for the Reds before wrecking his non-throwing elbow, but it was still enough to convince the team they'd seen enough of PAUL JANISH in the starting role. 1B JOEY VOTTO keeps punishing pitchers. OF JAY BRUCE is in his gawky, teenage phase, but he's already emerged as a major power source. OF DREW STUBBS must cut down on his MLB-leading 206 strikeouts. He's out of the leadoff spot now, but those whiffs don't play well anywhere in the lineup. OF CHRIS HEISEY should get the starting nod in left now that Yonder Alonso is out of the picture. 3B SCOTT ROLEN is a permanent health question mark. His backup, JUAN FRANCISCO, swings for the fences. C DEVIN MESORACO is the most hyped catching prospect since Matt Wieters. RYAN HANIGAN will split squatting responsibilities with him.
STARTING PITCHING: Considered a source of strength entering the 2011 campaign, the Reds rotation directly caused their undoing. The first step toward a remedy was trading for MAT LATOS, who began 2011 slow and got stronger as the year went on. The 24-year-old threw at least six innings with 5+ K in 16 of his final 17 starts (2.94 ERA). But that was in a much more pitcher-friendly environment. He has a decent career road ERA (3.57), and Cincy will surely give him much better run support than he received in San Diego. Last year's pitching problems began with BRONSON ARROYO, who gave up more home runs in a season than any pitcher in this millennium. He allowed more HR (46) than walks (45). JOHNNY CUETO was the one big bright spot; he hasn't maintained the strikeout rates he flashed early in his career, but he's All-Star caliber. HOMER BAILEY was a disappointment, going 9-7 with a 4.43 ERA. MIKE LEAKE actually pitched pretty well after he got his first taste of the minors to get his mechanics worked out.
RELIEF PITCHING: With Francisco Cordero flying the coop, and newcomer RYAN MADSON lost for the season with Tommy John Surgery, Cincinnati will use a closer-by-committee approach. The Reds gave up three players, including starter Travis Wood, to acquire SEAN MARSHALL, who should fit in nicely as a set-up man who's tough on both right-and left-handed batters. AROLDIS CHAPMAN is listed as the main set-up man for Marshall, but he missed out on winter ball and could be too raw to trust in the ninth inning. LOGAN ONDRUSEK is also capable of being a decent closer, with a big fastball.
TEXAS: HITTING: 2B IAN KINSLER will lead off again. A few less at-'em balls and he's an MVP candidate. SS ELVIS ANDRUS is coming along offensively, but his poor SB% could lead to fewer attempts. Injuries are the only thing that will keep OF JOSH HAMILTON out of the MVP discussion. He'll likely start declining at age 35, but DH MICHAEL YOUNG can't help but put up numbers batting cleanup in this lineup. 3B ADRIAN BELTRE was unstoppable in Arlington. Like Hamilton, he's an MVP candidate if healthy. Injuries are piling up for OF NELSON CRUZ, who still has monster power but doesn't run as much anymore. C MIKE NAPOLI is MLB's best offensive catcher and will play some 1B on 'off' days. Because their lineup is stacked, Texas can play defensive-minded/offensively limited 1B MITCH MORELAND. And because Ron Washington would prefer to play Hamilton in left, speedy CF CRAIG GENTRY looks to have the edge over DAVID MURPHY for the starting job in center. Cuban import LEONYS MARTIN will start the season in Triple-A, but JULIO BORBON could earn a significant OF role.
STARTING PITCHING: COLBY LEWIS can overpower when he's on, but as a flyball pitcher in cozy Arlington he's going to have a handful of ugly days. The much-ballyhooed YU DARVISH brings a deep arsenal of pitches and a durable frame from Japan. He's probably the best Japanese arm to ever cross the Pacific. Lefty MATT HARRISON solidified his rotation spot. He has topped out as a respectable No. 3-type starter. DEREK HOLLAND has top-of-the-rotation upside. Consistency has been an issue, but hopefully another year and some big postseason moments helped to cure that. The big story is NEFTALI FELIZ moving to the rotation. He was considered a future ace in the minors, but the transition might not be easy. His K/BB ratio plummeted last year and his flyball tendencies could spell disaster in Arlington. Keep in mind the Rangers made a successful closer-to-ace switch with C.J. Wilson. Top prospect MARTIN PEREZ could be an option in the second half.
RELIEF PITCHING: Veteran JOE NATHAN was brought in and handed the closer's job. He struggled in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, but most pitchers who've had the procedure don't come all the way back until their second full season. If Nathan falters, MIKE ADAMS could be next in line. He had no trouble transitioning from pitcher-friendly San Diego in the National League to hitter-friendly Arlington and the A.L.'s superior bats. KOJI UEHARA would also be in the closer discussion if Nathan falters, but he was unhappy about being traded from Baltimore and faltered for the Rangers late last year. ALEXI OGANDO got a huge boost from his defense and his bullpen before a late-season collapse. He threw by far a career-high in innings; better stamina would allow him to take the next step and possibly rejoin the rotation.

*Reds-Rangers Preview* ======================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Cincinnati (46-35) at Texas (47-34), 3:05 p.m. EDT

Mat Latos got back in the win column his last time out after seeing his long undefeated streak come to an end. Yu Darvish, meanwhile, is still trying to put the brakes on his winless streak.

The right-handers face off Sunday as the visiting Cincinnati Reds and Texas Rangers meet in the rubber match of their three-game series.

A 21-start regular season undefeated streak for Latos (7-1, 3.05 ERA), which dated back to Aug. 24, came to an end against Pittsburgh on June 18. But he rebounded last Sunday by yielding one run over 7 2-3 innings in a 4-2 victory at Arizona.

Latos matched a career high with 13 strikeouts, tied for baseball's third-most this year.

"You start striking out a lot of players, you start throwing a lot of pitches," said Latos, who registered 79 of his 110 pitches for strikes. "Maybe it would have been great to go all nine and not strike out 13, but I'll take it. It was a good win."

Darvish (7-3, 2.95) hasn't won since May 16 against Detroit. He's 0-2 despite a 2.93 ERA in seven outings since, receiving an average of only 2.35 runs of support in those games from a team that averages 4.3 runs per contest.

The longest Darvish went without a victory in his 16-win rookie season last year was three starts.

He has been troubled by the long ball lately, including his last start when he yielded a career-high three homers, all solo shots over 5 1-3 innings in a 4-3 road loss to the Yankees on Tuesday. Darvish also gave up two home runs in his prior start after allowing none in the previous three.

His average of 0.85 homers allowed per nine innings prior to the last two starts ranked as one of the lower figures among AL pitchers.

"He's pitching," manager Ron Washington said. "I don't see any difference in what he's been doing. Maybe at times he throws pitches he can get away with, but he didn't get away with it tonight."

After falling victim to two straight shutouts, the Reds' offense woke up in a 6-4, 11-inning victory Saturday. Shin-Soo Choo set the tone with a homer on the game's first pitch, and Devin Mesoraco put Cincinnati (46-35) ahead with a two-run homer in the top of the 11th for the Reds' second win in eight games

"Every streak starts with one. You got to get one before you get 10, six or whatever it is," manager Dusty Baker said. "I think one game can get you going. And the way you win it gets you going sometimes too."

Choo finished with three hits after going 1 for 19 over his previous six games, the only hit a home run.

Lance Berkman missed a second straight game for the Rangers (47-34) with a sore right knee, which he hurt while getting off the team's plane Thursday.

"(Berkman) can't be sore and come in here tomorrow ready to play," Washington told the team's official website. "I haven't talked to the doctors yet. He's not going to have that miraculous recovery. Tomorrow maybe a different story."

Ian Kinsler occupied Berkman's normal DH spot and went 0 for 5, continuing his slump as he's 2 for 18 over his last five contests.
