KEY GAME INFORMATION
CINCINNATI: HITTING: 2B BRANDON PHILLIPS sparked the Reds offense after moving to the top of the order. But his free-swinging makes him a bad fit there. SS ZACK COZART played in only 11 games for the Reds before wrecking his non-throwing elbow, but it was still enough to convince the team they'd seen enough of PAUL JANISH in the starting role. 1B JOEY VOTTO keeps punishing pitchers. OF JAY BRUCE is in his gawky, teenage phase, but he's already emerged as a major power source. OF DREW STUBBS must cut down on his MLB-leading 206 strikeouts. He's out of the leadoff spot now, but those whiffs don't play well anywhere in the lineup. OF CHRIS HEISEY should get the starting nod in left now that Yonder Alonso is out of the picture. 3B SCOTT ROLEN is a permanent health question mark. His backup, JUAN FRANCISCO, swings for the fences. C DEVIN MESORACO is the most hyped catching prospect since Matt Wieters. RYAN HANIGAN will split squatting responsibilities with him.
STARTING PITCHING: Considered a source of strength entering the 2011 campaign, the Reds rotation directly caused their undoing. The first step toward a remedy was trading for MAT LATOS, who began 2011 slow and got stronger as the year went on. The 24-year-old threw at least six innings with 5+ K in 16 of his final 17 starts (2.94 ERA). But that was in a much more pitcher-friendly environment. He has a decent career road ERA (3.57), and Cincy will surely give him much better run support than he received in San Diego. Last year's pitching problems began with BRONSON ARROYO, who gave up more home runs in a season than any pitcher in this millennium. He allowed more HR (46) than walks (45). JOHNNY CUETO was the one big bright spot; he hasn't maintained the strikeout rates he flashed early in his career, but he's All-Star caliber. HOMER BAILEY was a disappointment, going 9-7 with a 4.43 ERA. MIKE LEAKE actually pitched pretty well after he got his first taste of the minors to get his mechanics worked out.
RELIEF PITCHING: With Francisco Cordero flying the coop, and newcomer RYAN MADSON lost for the season with Tommy John Surgery, Cincinnati will use a closer-by-committee approach. The Reds gave up three players, including starter Travis Wood, to acquire SEAN MARSHALL, who should fit in nicely as a set-up man who's tough on both right-and left-handed batters. AROLDIS CHAPMAN is listed as the main set-up man for Marshall, but he missed out on winter ball and could be too raw to trust in the ninth inning. LOGAN ONDRUSEK is also capable of being a decent closer, with a big fastball.
TEXAS: HITTING: 2B IAN KINSLER will lead off again. A few less at-'em balls and he's an MVP candidate. SS ELVIS ANDRUS is coming along offensively, but his poor SB% could lead to fewer attempts. Injuries are the only thing that will keep OF JOSH HAMILTON out of the MVP discussion. He'll likely start declining at age 35, but DH MICHAEL YOUNG can't help but put up numbers batting cleanup in this lineup. 3B ADRIAN BELTRE was unstoppable in Arlington. Like Hamilton, he's an MVP candidate if healthy. Injuries are piling up for OF NELSON CRUZ, who still has monster power but doesn't run as much anymore. C MIKE NAPOLI is MLB's best offensive catcher and will play some 1B on 'off' days. Because their lineup is stacked, Texas can play defensive-minded/offensively limited 1B MITCH MORELAND. And because Ron Washington would prefer to play Hamilton in left, speedy CF CRAIG GENTRY looks to have the edge over DAVID MURPHY for the starting job in center. Cuban import LEONYS MARTIN will start the season in Triple-A, but JULIO BORBON could earn a significant OF role.
STARTING PITCHING: COLBY LEWIS can overpower when he's on, but as a flyball pitcher in cozy Arlington he's going to have a handful of ugly days. The much-ballyhooed YU DARVISH brings a deep arsenal of pitches and a durable frame from Japan. He's probably the best Japanese arm to ever cross the Pacific. Lefty MATT HARRISON solidified his rotation spot. He has topped out as a respectable No. 3-type starter. DEREK HOLLAND has top-of-the-rotation upside. Consistency has been an issue, but hopefully another year and some big postseason moments helped to cure that. The big story is NEFTALI FELIZ moving to the rotation. He was considered a future ace in the minors, but the transition might not be easy. His K/BB ratio plummeted last year and his flyball tendencies could spell disaster in Arlington. Keep in mind the Rangers made a successful closer-to-ace switch with C.J. Wilson. Top prospect MARTIN PEREZ could be an option in the second half.
RELIEF PITCHING: Veteran JOE NATHAN was brought in and handed the closer's job. He struggled in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, but most pitchers who've had the procedure don't come all the way back until their second full season. If Nathan falters, MIKE ADAMS could be next in line. He had no trouble transitioning from pitcher-friendly San Diego in the National League to hitter-friendly Arlington and the A.L.'s superior bats. KOJI UEHARA would also be in the closer discussion if Nathan falters, but he was unhappy about being traded from Baltimore and faltered for the Rangers late last year. ALEXI OGANDO got a huge boost from his defense and his bullpen before a late-season collapse. He threw by far a career-high in innings; better stamina would allow him to take the next step and possibly rejoin the rotation.

*Reds-Rangers Preview* ======================

By MATT BECKER STATS Editor

Cincinnati (45-34) at Texas (45-33), 8:05 p.m. EDT

The Cincinnati Reds' offense is scuffling and their staff ace is coming off a disastrous outing.

Dusty Baker hopes the return of his All-Star second baseman can help ignite the offense, but he hasn't exactly been swinging a hot bat lately.

Brandon Phillips is scheduled to come back from the paternity list Friday night when the visiting Reds open a series with the surging Texas Rangers.

Cincinnati (45-34) is averaging 2.5 runs and batting .204 in dropping six of eight. Joey Votto is in the middle of the mess, going 2 for 13 in his last four games, while leadoff hitter Shin-Soo Choo is 1 for 15 with seven strikeouts in his last five.

"Everybody is going to have a streak like this. It didn't matter because we didn't score any runs," Baker said after the Reds managed two hits in Wednesday's 5-0 loss to Oakland. "Not only are we not scoring runs but we're not getting any hits either. It's not anything you want to do.

"At least we'll have Brandon back and he adds to the lineup."

Phillips has missed the last two games, but his return doesn't necessarily mean the offense will suddenly break out considering he's 4 for 36 in his last nine contests.

Baker wasn't concerned after scheduled starter Johnny Cueto (4-1, 3.21 ERA) was knocked around by Arizona last Friday, chalking it up to simply an aberration. Cueto was tagged for seven runs and a career high-tying 11 hits over 4 1-3 innings in an 11-5 loss. He had allowed two runs and 10 hits over 21 innings in his previous three starts.

"Things did not go well," Cueto said through a translator. "It is just one outing but a bad outing. I have a lot more outings, so I have to keep my head up and continue."

He'll be facing a Texas offense that is averaging 4.8 runs and batting .310 with runners in scoring position over a 7-1 stretch. Ian Kinsler is hitting .351 with seven RBIs over his last 10 games, and Nelson Cruz is batting .325 with four home runs and 13 RBIs in that same stretch for the Rangers (46-33), who open a nine-game homestand.

"We're playing good baseball now, and we tend to play better at home," David Murphy told the Rangers' official website after Thursday's 2-0 win over the New York Yankees. "I know our offense tends to perform better at home. It's always good to be at home for 10 or 11 days. Hopefully, we can take advantage of that and win some games and win some series."

Although this will be Cueto's first outing against Texas, the right-hander has historically fared well against the American League, going 5-0 with a 1.39 ERA in seven interleague starts since losing to Seattle on June 18, 2010.

Texas counters with rookie Martin Perez (1-1, 3.65).

Making his second start of the season Saturday in St. Louis, Perez gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings of a 4-2 win.

"I've always seen the stuff, but tonight was the first time I think he showed he's a big-league pitcher," manager Ron Washington said of the left-hander, who had a 1.75 ERA in six starts for Triple-A Round Rock. "It can be a huge step, he just beat a pretty good team."

This will be the teams' first meeting since 2007, and the Reds' first trip to Rangers Ballpark since 2002.
