| | | CHI WHITE SOX: HITTING: The departure of Juan Pierre opens things up for SS ALEXEI RAMIREZ to hit leadoff. 2B GORDON BECKHAM will get a fresh start, but his leash is shortening. 1B PAUL KONERKO faded last year. He's potential trade bait for the rebuilding Sox. Did DH ADAM DUNN need a year to adjust to A.L. pitching and DHing? With his contract, the Sox will have to find out. OF ALEJANDRO DE AZA's late-season surge probably wasn't for real, but it was enough to get him the inside track on a starting job with Carlos Quentin having been dealt to the Padres on New Year's Eve. OF ALEX RIOS has bounced back before, but at his age the odds are longer now. The organization believes in OF DAYAN VICIEDO. His improving approach and power fit well in U.S. Cellular, but he could platoon with KOSUKE FUKUDOME in left field. C A.J. PIERZYNSKI has motivation for one more solid season as free agency looms. 3B BRENT MOREL is good glove, but has a limited stick. OF/1B BRENT LILLIBRIDGE has an improving bat and can play just about anywhere. STARTING PITCHING: JOHN DANKS doesn't look like a true No. 1 starter, but he keeps consistently throwing strikes and has some swing-and-miss stuff. Maybe it's because he's fallen short of his once-elite prospect status, but GAVIN FLOYD seems to get no respect as a quality middle-of-the-rotation arm. He was especially good after adding a cutter/slider-type pitch last year. JAKE PEAVY isn't going to win another Cy Young, but unlike last year, his shoulder should be close to 100 percent. The big question will again be whether, as a flyball pitcher, he can keep the ball in the park at cozy U.S. Cellular. PHILIP HUMBER was a nice surprise in 2011, but don't be fooled. It wasn't a former top prospect finally figuring it out. It was a back-of-the-rotation arm getting some good breaks. CHRIS SALE will make the move to the rotation. He'll likely be on some pitch counts, but this is an exciting development. With his stuff (he already has a solid changeup to go with his fastball/slider combo) he has monster upside. RELIEF PITCHING: With closer Sergio Santos shipped off to Toronto, youngster ADDISON REED figures to be the top candidate to close games. Any young closer is a risk, but Reed's fastball/slider combo has been dominant over two pro seasons. Lefty MATT THORNTON might have blown his chance to claim the closer role last year. He had regained his form as a top set-up man late in the year, but if Reed falters he might be no more than a committee guy. JESSE CRAIN chased strikeouts more aggressively last year, but he also issued more walks. He may miss the first couple weeks of the season with an oblique injury. | | TEXAS: HITTING: 2B IAN KINSLER will lead off again. A few less at-'em balls and he's an MVP candidate. SS ELVIS ANDRUS is coming along offensively, but his poor SB% could lead to fewer attempts. Injuries are the only thing that will keep OF JOSH HAMILTON out of the MVP discussion. He'll likely start declining at age 35, but DH MICHAEL YOUNG can't help but put up numbers batting cleanup in this lineup. 3B ADRIAN BELTRE was unstoppable in Arlington. Like Hamilton, he's an MVP candidate if healthy. Injuries are piling up for OF NELSON CRUZ, who still has monster power but doesn't run as much anymore. C MIKE NAPOLI is MLB's best offensive catcher and will play some 1B on 'off' days. Because their lineup is stacked, Texas can play defensive-minded/offensively limited 1B MITCH MORELAND. And because Ron Washington would prefer to play Hamilton in left, speedy CF CRAIG GENTRY looks to have the edge over DAVID MURPHY for the starting job in center. Cuban import LEONYS MARTIN will start the season in Triple-A, but JULIO BORBON could earn a significant OF role. STARTING PITCHING: COLBY LEWIS can overpower when he's on, but as a flyball pitcher in cozy Arlington he's going to have a handful of ugly days. The much-ballyhooed YU DARVISH brings a deep arsenal of pitches and a durable frame from Japan. He's probably the best Japanese arm to ever cross the Pacific. Lefty MATT HARRISON solidified his rotation spot. He has topped out as a respectable No. 3-type starter. DEREK HOLLAND has top-of-the-rotation upside. Consistency has been an issue, but hopefully another year and some big postseason moments helped to cure that. The big story is NEFTALI FELIZ moving to the rotation. He was considered a future ace in the minors, but the transition might not be easy. His K/BB ratio plummeted last year and his flyball tendencies could spell disaster in Arlington. Keep in mind the Rangers made a successful closer-to-ace switch with C.J. Wilson. Top prospect MARTIN PEREZ could be an option in the second half. RELIEF PITCHING: Veteran JOE NATHAN was brought in and handed the closer's job. He struggled in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, but most pitchers who've had the procedure don't come all the way back until their second full season. If Nathan falters, MIKE ADAMS could be next in line. He had no trouble transitioning from pitcher-friendly San Diego in the National League to hitter-friendly Arlington and the A.L.'s superior bats. KOJI UEHARA would also be in the closer discussion if Nathan falters, but he was unhappy about being traded from Baltimore and faltered for the Rangers late last year. ALEXI OGANDO got a huge boost from his defense and his bullpen before a late-season collapse. He threw by far a career-high in innings; better stamina would allow him to take the next step and possibly rejoin the rotation. |

*White Sox-Rangers Preview* ===========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Chicago (10-15) at Texas (17-9), 8:05 p.m. EDT
A.J. Pierzynski's first interaction with his former club wasn't very pleasant.
He may be in the lineup against the Chicago White Sox for the first time Thursday night, when the Texas Rangers attempt to remain the only team in the majors to avoid losing a series.
Pierzynski spent eight seasons with the White Sox (11-15), playing a vital role in helping them win the 2005 World Series.
The former All-Star left Chicago for Texas (17-10) via free agency in December, and he's hitting .360 in eight home games.
He wasn't very happy with his first meeting with the White Sox after soreness and bruising to his side kept him out of Tuesday's 10-6 win in the opener of this three-game set.
In a pinch-hit appearance in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 5-2 loss, Pierzynski was hit by a pitch from closer Addison Reed. The fiery catcher reacted by flipping his bat away and saying a few words before staring at Reed on his way to first - and even more after getting there.
"I'm sure he was just trying to pitch me in and it got away," Pierzynski said diplomatically afterward.
The catcher may start Thursday as Texas tries to avoid its first series loss this season, but he'll see a familiar face when he steps into the batter's box.
"I mean, certainly we know each other very well," White Sox starter Jake Peavy told the team's official website of his scheduled start in the series finale. "He knows a lot of what I'm probably going to do to him. And I know what to do to him. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
"A.J. is a great hitter, and it's not a fun test trying to get him out three or four times."
Pierzynski is 4 for 15 versus Peavy, but that was before they became teammates in Chicago in 2009.
Peavy (3-1, 3.38), though, is looking for his first win versus Texas. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 7.59 ERA in four career starts, but enters this meeting with some momentum.
He's 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 20 2-3 innings over his last three outings.
Peavy turned in another quality start Friday, allowing three runs and two homers while fanning six in 6 2-3 innings of a 5-4 win over Tampa Bay.
The Rangers are scheduled to counter Peavy with rookie Justin Grimm (2-0, 1.59), who has won his last two starts while yielding two runs - one earned - and yielding 11 hits with 13 strikeouts in 13 innings.
"The name of the game is trusting my stuff," Grimm told the team's official website "It's not just the stuff, it's just a mindset. It's not trying for the strikeout or trying to do too much but just trusting my stuff out there."
The right-hander certainly did that Friday, scattering five hits in seven scoreless innings of a 4-3 win at Minnesota.
"I just want to pitch for this team, whether it's in the rotation or not," Grimm said. "I want to prove that I belong here. That's the whole idea."
It seems like he'll get that chance since Matt Harrison had a setback in his recovery from surgery on a herniated disk in his lower back, and needs a second operation in nine days.
Grimm, though, was tagged for three runs with three strikeouts and two walks in the final three innings of a 19-2 road loss to the White Sox on July 3.
