Who's gone? OF Seth Smith, SS Ketel Marte, C Chris Iannetta, OF Nori Aoki, RHP Taijuan Walker, RHP Nathan Karns, LHP Vidal Nuno, LHP David Rollins, RHP Tom Wilhelmsen
Projected lineup: LF Jarrod Dyson (.278, 1 HR, 25 RBI, 30 SB with Royals), SS Jean Segura (.319, 20, 64, 33 with Diamondbacks), 2B Robinson Cano (.298, 39, 103), DH Nelson Cruz (.287, 43, 105), 3B Kyle Seager (.278, 30, 99), C Mike Zunino (.207, 12, 31), 1B Danny Valencia (.287, 17, 51 with A's), RF Mitch Haniger (.229, 5, 17 in 34 games with Diamondbacks), CF Leonys Martin (.247, 15, 47, 24 SB)
Rotation: RH Felix Hernandez (11-8, 3.82), RH Hisashi Iwakuma (16-12, 4.12), LH James Paxton (6-7, 3.79), RH Yovani Gallardo (6-8, 5.42 with Orioles), LH Drew Smyly (7-12, 4.88 with Rays)
Key relievers: RH Steve Cishek (4-6, 2.81, 25/32 SV), RH Edwin Diaz (0-4, 2.79, 18/21), RH Nick Vincent (4-4, 3.73), RH Evan Scribner (0-0, 0.00 in 12 games), LH Marc Rzepczynski (1-0, 2.64 with A's and Nationals), RH Casey Fien (1-1, 5.49 with Twins and Dodgers)
Hot spots: First base and right field. Veteran Valencia has the first baseman's job for now, but Dan Vogelbach is the heir apparent who will begin the season at Triple-A. Vogelbach, 24, slimmed down this offseason ' a necessity when you're 6 feet tall, weigh 250 pounds and expect to play your first full major league season ' and might have more weight to lose. Valencia, 32, has never been a full-time first baseman in seven seasons. Haniger is known more for his glove than his bat, but he struggled (.713 OPS) in limited time at a hitter-friendly park in Arizona last year. Safeco Field won't be as kind. Cruz will play right field if Haniger doesn't.
Outlook: General Manager Jerry Dipoto has paired a staff of fly-ball pitchers with three rangy outfielders, an exercise in team-building he once tried with the Angels. Dipoto caused a stir by executing 40 roster transactions during the offseason, but is it possible he didn't do enough? Haniger has never been atop a major league depth chart. Pitchers Gallardo and Smyly are coming off shaky seasons in Baltimore and Tampa Bay, respectively. On paper, the Mariners look like a top-heavy team without much help in the minors if the bottom falls out. That was the case for Dipoto with the Angels too, and sometimes it worked out OK. More often it didn't. | | TAMPA BAY: 2016: 68-94, fifth place
Manager: Kevin Cash (third season)
Who's new? OF Colby Rasmus, OF/1B Rickie Weeks Jr., RHP Tommy Hunter, RHP Jumbo Diaz, C Wilson Ramos, C Derek Norris, OF Mallex Smith, RHP Jose De Leon, RHP Shawn Tolleson
Who's gone? 2B Logan Forsythe, IF/OF Steve Pearce, OF Desmond Jennings, OF Mikie Mahtook, C Hank Conger, IF/OF Taylor Motter, C Bobby Wilson, LHP Drew Smyly, LHP Enny Romero, RHP Steve Geltz, LHP Dana Eveland, RHP Kevin Jepsen, RHP Tyler Sturdevant, RHP Dylan Floro
Projected lineup: DH Corey Dickerson (.245, 24, 70), CF Kevin Kiermaier (.246, 12, 37, 21 SB), 3B Evan Longoria (.273, 36, 98), 2B Brad Miller (.243, 30, 81), RF Steven Souza (.247, 17, 49), LF Colby Rasmus (.206, 15, 54 with Astros), SS Tim Beckham (.247, 5, 16), 1B Logan Morrison (.238, 14, 43), C Curt Casali (.186, 8, 25)
Rotation: RH Chris Archer (9-19, 4.02 ERA), RH Jake Odorizzi (10-6, 3.69), RH Alex Cobb (1-2, 8.59 in five starts), LH Blake Snell (6-8, 3.54), RH Matt Andriese (8-8, 4.37)
Key relievers: RH Alex Colome (2-4, 1.91, 37/40 SV), RH Tommy Hunter (2-2, 3.18 with Indians), RH Danny Farquhar (1-0, 3.06), LH Xavier Cede'o (3-4, 3.70), RH Erasmo Ramirez (7-11, 3.77), RH Jumbo Diaz (1-1, 3.14), RH Chase Whitley (0-0, 2.51)
Hot spots: Shortstop and catcher. Tim Beckham and the combination of Curt Casali and newly signed Derek Norris are holding down the fort while Matt Duffy and Wilson Ramos recover from injuries. Beckham and Casali or Norris can at least try to make the situation awkward by hitting. That wasn't their strong suit last year, but the Rays will need someone to bat eighth and ninth while Ramos (knee surgery; out until July) and Duffy (Achilles surgery; out until May) heal.
Outlook: How do you fix a team that ranked eighth in the AL in ERA and 14th in runs scored? If you're the Rays, you trade away your second-best hitter (Forsythe) for a pitcher who will start the season in Triple-A (De Leon), then sign an outfielder with a .641 OPS (Rasmus) to be your second-highest paid player. Expectations for a team with the third-lowest payroll in the game shouldn't be high to begin with. Getting Duffy and Ramos back from the DL will help, but not enough to slow rumors of Archer, Cobb and Odorizzi getting traded if they pitch well. |
| | Cruz leading Mariners' hot bats against Rays
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Seattle's hot bats continue to keep them in the thick of the American League wild-card race, with Nelson Cruz leading the way. "We are riding the boomstick right now," manager Scott Servais said after Cruz hit a two-run home run that proved the winning margin in a 7-6 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. A night earlier, Cruz crushed a 482-foot home run that is the longest recorded ever at Tropicana Field. On Saturday, his home run was initially ruled a double, but replay showed that it cleared the fence and bounced back into play off a railing. "They all count," joked Servais, who has seen Cruz hit 11 home runs since July 30, matching the most in the major leagues. "It hit just far enough. Nelly is hot, he's swinging the bat great and everybody else is contributing as well." The Mariners have won four straight games, including two against the Rays, who found their bats Saturday, scoring six runs after totaling nine in their previous 10 home games. Tampa Bay can gain confidence from their three home runs Saturday and a late rally that fell a run short, but each loss takes them farther out of postseason contention. "The bats finally came alive," manager Kevin Cash said. "To me, that's the story of the game. We lost, and it stinks, but we needed to see some type of production, some type of positive performance from the offense, and I think we provided that." The Rays have lost eight of nine and 12 of 15, and they'll hope to rally Sunday around left-hander Blake Snell, whose last start was his first win in 16 starts this season. Snell is 1-6 with a 4.78 ERA, and his win Tuesday wasn't his sharpest outing, allowing seven hits and four runs in six innings. Snell faced Seattle in his second major league start in June 2016, lasting only 3 1/3 innings and giving up eight hits, though four of the five runs he allowed were unearned. The Mariners counter with righty Yovani Gallardo, who has struggled even more, with a 5-8 record and 5.84 ERA, highest among Seattle's starting rotation. He's been bounced to the bullpen and back to the rotation -- his numbers against the Rays aren't bad, with a 3-2 career record with a 4.71 ERA in seven starts. He's sharper still at Tropicana Field, with a 2-1 record and 2.82 ERA in four starts there. The Rays' six runs Saturday were their most in any home game since June 23, but it coincided with a rare off-night on the mound. They'll try to take the positive aspect of Saturday's loss with the hopes of more of the same Sunday. "Tonight we hit a speed bump, but we will bounce back and overcome it," Cash said. "I think the most important part is that the offense put together an inning, put together some good at-bats and ultimately, put some runs on the board." |
