KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.
TAMPA BAY: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays feel they have everything it takes to win the World Series and aren't afraid to say it.
The budget-minded franchise that's played into October four out of the past six seasons boosted payroll instead of cutting back this winter in hopes of making another strong run for the playoffs.
''The goal is to be the team that plays the last game of the year and win,'' third baseman Evan Longoria said.
''I felt like we were really close to breaking through last year,'' the three-time AL All-Star added. ''And with the team that we have this year, I'm really excited to go out and try to prove to ourselves that we are good enough to do that.''
The Rays won 92 games a year ago, including a Game 163 tie-breaker to claim a wild-card spot, and have compiled the second-best record in baseball over the past six seasons.
That's not enough for manager Joe Maddon and a hungry collection of players who reported to spring training feeling as if there's unfinished business to tend to after losing to eventual World Series champion Boston in the AL division round.
''I love that our guys feel and think that way. I think it's great,'' Maddon said.
''You'll hear that rhetoric in a lot of clubhouses, whether it's baseball, football or basketball, but you've got to back it up. You have to really believe it. Not just say it,'' he said. ''Some groups say it because they're supposed to say it. Some groups say it because they believe it. Our guys believe it.''
That confidence was bolstered by the Rays' ability to keep most of the key components from last year's roster together, including lefty David Price, who anchors one of baseball's deepest pitching rotations.
Price and just about everybody else expected the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner to be traded, however the Rays wound up giving him a $14 million one-year deal, in addition to re-signing first baseman James Loney and landing free agent closer Grant Balfour in moves that represent a big chunk of a club-record payroll of around $80 million.
Andrew Friedman, the team's vice president of baseball operations, also traded for catcher Ryan Hanigan and infielder Logan Forsythe to give Maddon additional flexibility filling out a batting order around Longoria and 2013 AL rookie of the year Wil Myers.
''Talent can't win every game for you, but it's a good start,'' said Loney, who signed a three-year, $21 million deal - largest since Tampa Bay has given to a free agent since Stuart Sternberg became principal owner.
''If we can stay healthy, if we can do the things we're capable of doing,'' second baseman Ben Zobrist add, ''we certainly have as good or better chance than any other team in the league to win it all.''

*Yankees-Rays Preview* ======================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

New York (76-73) at Tampa Bay (73-78), 7:10 p.m. EDT

The New York Yankees seem to have reached a boiling point after their batters have repeatedly been hit by Tampa Bay Rays pitchers.

Unfortunately for their fading playoff chances, their offense has hit rock bottom.

New York hopes its beleaguered bats can wake up Wednesday night against Rays right-hander Alex Cobb.

The Yankees (76-74) had their postseason hopes put on life support with Tuesday's 6-1 loss at Tropicana Field - their fifth defeat in six games.

Tensions initially flared when Steve Geltz hit Derek Jeter on the hand in the eighth inning, marking the fifth time a Yankees batter has been struck by a Rays pitcher in the last five meetings.

Manager Joe Girardi was ejected when he came onto the field after Jeter was struck, and David Phelps was tossed in the bottom of the inning after throwing inside against Kevin Kiermaier, prompting both dugouts to empty.

"I'm all for pitching inside, but you've got to know how to pitch inside because it's extremely dangerous," Girardi said. "I don't know what they expect ... you hit five of our guys in four games, you don't think we'll be (mad)?"

Girardi is likely more concerned with his team's lack of offense. New York has scored seven runs during its 1-5 stretch while going 3 for 34 with runners in scoring position.

The Yankees aren't getting any healthier, either, with Martin Prado's season coming to an end after an appendectomy Tuesday. Prado leads the team with a .316 average in his 37 games since being acquired from Arizona and had hit seven homers with 16 RBIs.

Mark Teixeira also wasn't in Tuesday's lineup due to a nagging right wrist injury, and Girardi was unsure when he would play again.

New York will have to try to figure out Cobb (9-7, 2.75 ERA), whose bid for a no-hitter Thursday at Yankee Stadium was spoiled by Chris Young's one-out double in the eighth inning. That hit ended Cobb's outing in the Rays' eventual 5-4 loss.

"Cobb was outstanding. He was as good as I've seen him," Jeter said afterward.

Jeter - caught in an 0-for-26 slump that is the second-longest of his career - is just 2 for 15 against Cobb.

Cobb is 7-1 over his last 14 starts and has a 0.92 ERA in the last six. He fanned eight over 7 1-3 innings in a 5-0 home victory against the Yankees on Aug. 15 and is 5-0 with a 1.24 ERA in his last seven meetings. His 1.69 career ERA versus New York is his lowest against an opponent he's faced multiple times.

Teixeira is the only New York player with any consistent success against Cobb, going 4 for 11 with a home run. No other Yankee is batting better than .222 against him in more than one at-bat.

Brandon McCarthy (6-4, 2.54 ERA) endured a brief rough patch for New York when he allowed nine runs over 12 1-3 innings in back-to-back starts Aug. 26 and 31, but has since posted two straight quality outings. He threw seven shutout innings in the Yankees' 2-1 loss at Baltimore on Friday, leaving without a decision.

McCarthy had been 3-0 with a 0.88 ERA in his past four outings versus Tampa Bay before yielding four runs - two earned - over 6 1-3 innings of a 5-0 road loss Aug. 15.

The Rays (74-78) are aiming for their first three-game sweep of the Yankees in St. Petersburg since April 6-8, 2012.

James Loney is 15 for 33 over his last eight contests.
