KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.
TAMPA BAY: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays feel they have everything it takes to win the World Series and aren't afraid to say it.
The budget-minded franchise that's played into October four out of the past six seasons boosted payroll instead of cutting back this winter in hopes of making another strong run for the playoffs.
''The goal is to be the team that plays the last game of the year and win,'' third baseman Evan Longoria said.
''I felt like we were really close to breaking through last year,'' the three-time AL All-Star added. ''And with the team that we have this year, I'm really excited to go out and try to prove to ourselves that we are good enough to do that.''
The Rays won 92 games a year ago, including a Game 163 tie-breaker to claim a wild-card spot, and have compiled the second-best record in baseball over the past six seasons.
That's not enough for manager Joe Maddon and a hungry collection of players who reported to spring training feeling as if there's unfinished business to tend to after losing to eventual World Series champion Boston in the AL division round.
''I love that our guys feel and think that way. I think it's great,'' Maddon said.
''You'll hear that rhetoric in a lot of clubhouses, whether it's baseball, football or basketball, but you've got to back it up. You have to really believe it. Not just say it,'' he said. ''Some groups say it because they're supposed to say it. Some groups say it because they believe it. Our guys believe it.''
That confidence was bolstered by the Rays' ability to keep most of the key components from last year's roster together, including lefty David Price, who anchors one of baseball's deepest pitching rotations.
Price and just about everybody else expected the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner to be traded, however the Rays wound up giving him a $14 million one-year deal, in addition to re-signing first baseman James Loney and landing free agent closer Grant Balfour in moves that represent a big chunk of a club-record payroll of around $80 million.
Andrew Friedman, the team's vice president of baseball operations, also traded for catcher Ryan Hanigan and infielder Logan Forsythe to give Maddon additional flexibility filling out a batting order around Longoria and 2013 AL rookie of the year Wil Myers.
''Talent can't win every game for you, but it's a good start,'' said Loney, who signed a three-year, $21 million deal - largest since Tampa Bay has given to a free agent since Stuart Sternberg became principal owner.
''If we can stay healthy, if we can do the things we're capable of doing,'' second baseman Ben Zobrist add, ''we certainly have as good or better chance than any other team in the league to win it all.''

*Yankees-Rays Preview* ======================

New York (76-72) at Tampa Bay (72-78), 7:10 p.m. EDT

The New York Yankees have won four straight starts by Chris Capuano, although he deserved no credit for any contribution in last week's victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Capuano will try to bounce back from the shortest start of his career when he takes the mound Monday night against the Rays to start a three-game set at Tropicana Field.

Six of the seven Tampa Bay hitters Capuano (2-3, 4.90 ERA) faced reached base Wednesday as he failed to get out of the first inning for the first time after doing so in his first 217 starts. He recorded one out and was charged with four runs before the Yankees (76-72) rallied to win 8-5 at home.

"The execution wasn't spot on and was making some good pitches they were fouling off, I couldn't get them to miss it or put it in play to get that groundball that I needed," Capuano said. "The ones I executed they did a good job of battling and fouling them off and the level of execution wasn't there on the other pitches."

Capuano really hadn't pitched well in his three previous outings, giving up six homers over 16 2-3 innings and posting a 4.86 ERA as he went 1-0.

Tampa Bay hitters who are probably looking forward to facing the left-hander again include Wil Myers (3 for 3), Yunel Escobar (4 for 6), James Loney (4 for 6) and Logan Forsythe (4 for 10).

Escobar is hitting .354 in a season series that Tampa Bay (72-78) leads 9-7. The Rays are seeking to become the first team to win at least 10 games against the Yankees in three straight seasons since Boston from 1973-75.

New York realistically has no shot at reaching the postseason with a five-game deficit behind Kansas City for the AL's second wild card.

The Yankees lost three of four this weekend in Baltimore. Closer David Robertson failed to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning of Sunday's 3-2 defeat.

"It was another tough one tonight," manager Joe Girardi said. "Just have to move on."

Jacoby Ellsbury is in a 2-for-25 slump, Mark Teixeira a 4-for-32 slide and Derek Jeter was out of Monday's lineup amid an 0-for-24 stretch. Jeter owns an AL-worst .510 OPS since the All-Star break.

Brett Gardner is 1 for 10 with five strikeouts in three games after missing six due to lower abdominal pain.

The Yankees will face a pitcher making his fifth career start in Alex Colome (1-0, 2.79), who has endured a rocky year. He was suspended for the first 50 games of the season for a positive steroids test and is back in the big leagues after going 0-1 with a 9.95 ERA in two postseason starts at Triple-A Durham.

The right-hander won his lone 2014 start with Tampa Bay by allowing one run in 5 2-3 innings in a 5-2 win at Baltimore on June 27. His only outing versus New York came when he allowed three unearned runs in 4 1-3 innings and didn't factor in a 7-5 loss June 22, 2013.
