KEY GAME INFORMATION
CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''
TAMPA BAY: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays feel they have everything it takes to win the World Series and aren't afraid to say it.
The budget-minded franchise that's played into October four out of the past six seasons boosted payroll instead of cutting back this winter in hopes of making another strong run for the playoffs.
''The goal is to be the team that plays the last game of the year and win,'' third baseman Evan Longoria said.
''I felt like we were really close to breaking through last year,'' the three-time AL All-Star added. ''And with the team that we have this year, I'm really excited to go out and try to prove to ourselves that we are good enough to do that.''
The Rays won 92 games a year ago, including a Game 163 tie-breaker to claim a wild-card spot, and have compiled the second-best record in baseball over the past six seasons.
That's not enough for manager Joe Maddon and a hungry collection of players who reported to spring training feeling as if there's unfinished business to tend to after losing to eventual World Series champion Boston in the AL division round.
''I love that our guys feel and think that way. I think it's great,'' Maddon said.
''You'll hear that rhetoric in a lot of clubhouses, whether it's baseball, football or basketball, but you've got to back it up. You have to really believe it. Not just say it,'' he said. ''Some groups say it because they're supposed to say it. Some groups say it because they believe it. Our guys believe it.''
That confidence was bolstered by the Rays' ability to keep most of the key components from last year's roster together, including lefty David Price, who anchors one of baseball's deepest pitching rotations.
Price and just about everybody else expected the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner to be traded, however the Rays wound up giving him a $14 million one-year deal, in addition to re-signing first baseman James Loney and landing free agent closer Grant Balfour in moves that represent a big chunk of a club-record payroll of around $80 million.
Andrew Friedman, the team's vice president of baseball operations, also traded for catcher Ryan Hanigan and infielder Logan Forsythe to give Maddon additional flexibility filling out a batting order around Longoria and 2013 AL rookie of the year Wil Myers.
''Talent can't win every game for you, but it's a good start,'' said Loney, who signed a three-year, $21 million deal - largest since Tampa Bay has given to a free agent since Stuart Sternberg became principal owner.
''If we can stay healthy, if we can do the things we're capable of doing,'' second baseman Ben Zobrist add, ''we certainly have as good or better chance than any other team in the league to win it all.''

*Indians-Rays Preview* ======================

Cleveland (16-19) at Tampa Bay (15-20), 7:10 p.m. EDT

After a rocky start following their first playoff appearance in six years, the Cleveland Indians are playing their best baseball of the season.

They'll look to keep it going against the team that ended their postseason dreams after just nine innings in October.

The Indians try to stretch their season-best winning streak to four games and exact a little revenge in Friday night's opener against the Tampa Bay Rays, who will try to avoid a sixth consecutive home loss for the first time in nearly nine years.

Cleveland (16-19) just completed a 5-2 homestand, capped off by three straight wins over Minnesota. Asdrubal Cabrera, who came into Thursday's finale hitting .215, had four of the Indians' season high-tying 15 hits and drove in three runs in a 9-4 victory.

"We needed this homestand. That's exactly what we needed," winning pitcher Justin Masterson told the team's official website. "Hopefully, that will help carry into this (Tampa) series, because there's a lot of momentum with the guys at the plate and guys are still pitching pretty good, too."

Friday's contest will be Cleveland's first meeting with the Rays since Oct. 2, when Tampa Bay beat the Indians 4-0 in the AL wild-card game at Progressive Field.

Cleveland only got four innings from Danny Salazar in that one, but on Friday will hand the ball to a pitcher who's shown he's capable of going deep into games. Two starts after going the distance in a win over Kansas City, Corey Kluber (2-3, 3.60 ERA) struck out 13 and allowed a run and three hits over eight innings Sunday before the bullpen caved in a 4-3 loss to the White Sox.

The right-hander set a franchise record by striking out seven consecutive batters, giving him 29 in his last 21 2-3 innings.

"It's a nice byproduct of having a good game," Kluber said. "I wasn't keeping track. I just tried to stay in the flow of the game and keep it going."

Kluber pitched two scoreless innings in his lone start against the Rays (15-20) on May 31 before that game was interrupted by nearly five hours of rain delays.

This time, he'll try to help hand Tampa Bay a fourth straight loss overall and sixth in a row at Tropicana Field. The Rays haven't lost that many consecutive games at home in a single season since June 17-26, 2005.

After taking four of six in Boston and New York, Tampa Bay returned home and totaled seven runs while getting swept in three games against Baltimore.

The Rays went 4 for 26 with runners in scoring position in the series, including 1 for 12 in a 3-1 loss Thursday.

"It's been real up and down, and inconsistent," said Evan Longoria, who's hitting .184 in his last 12 games. "Our goal right now is to figure out a way to get through it. Continue to be positive. We all want to win. We all want to do our part. When it doesn't work out, it's definitely frustrating."

Tampa may need its offense to come through in a big way with Jake Odorizzi (1-3, 6.83 ERA) on the mound. After throwing six scoreless innings while winning his season debut against Texas, Odorizzi has gone five or fewer in his last five.

The right-hander was perfect through three innings Saturday in the Bronx before giving up five hits, two walks and three runs over the next 10 plate appearances - leaving before recording an out in the fifth.

Opponents are batting .140 (7 for 50) against Odorizzi in his first time through the order, .442 (19 for 43) his second time through and .500 (9 for 18) the third.

Odorizzi has a 4.91 ERA in two career starts versus Cleveland, both of which came in September 2012 with Kansas City.

The Indians have lost 14 of their last 19 at Tropicana Field.
