| |  | BALTIMORE: BALTIMORE (AP) - The transformation of the Baltimore Orioles clubhouse under manager Buck Showalter is complete.
No longer do the Orioles hope to win. They expect it.
When Showalter took over in July 2010, he inherited a team with the worst record in the majors. Having gone without a winning season since 1997, Baltimore could only hope Showalter's knack for orchestrating quick turnarounds would take hold in a town that had switched its allegiance from baseball to football.
By 2012, the Orioles were back. Baltimore won 93 games, beat Texas in the wild-card matchup and took the New York Yankees to the limit before falling in the AL division series.
After missing the postseason last year, the Orioles are poised for a return. They maintained the nucleus of a team that went 85-77 and was in contention to the final week, then added right-handed starter Ubaldo Jimenez and slugger Nelson Cruz to an already potent lineup that led the majors in home runs in 2013.
''When you have talent, you have confidence,'' right fielder Nick Markakis said. ''Put them together and good things usually happen. We've got that right now. We know we have a good team and we're going to roll with it.''
Although Jimenez and Cruz didn't come aboard until after the start of spring training, Showalter never wavered in his belief that the Orioles would challenge the defending champion Boston Red Sox and retooled Yankees in the AL East.
''I felt that way whether or not we added Nelson and Jimenez,'' he said. ''That's a poor reflection on me and my staff if we thought we needed more to win.''
| | TAMPA BAY: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays feel they have everything it takes to win the World Series and aren't afraid to say it.
The budget-minded franchise that's played into October four out of the past six seasons boosted payroll instead of cutting back this winter in hopes of making another strong run for the playoffs.
''The goal is to be the team that plays the last game of the year and win,'' third baseman Evan Longoria said.
''I felt like we were really close to breaking through last year,'' the three-time AL All-Star added. ''And with the team that we have this year, I'm really excited to go out and try to prove to ourselves that we are good enough to do that.''
The Rays won 92 games a year ago, including a Game 163 tie-breaker to claim a wild-card spot, and have compiled the second-best record in baseball over the past six seasons.
That's not enough for manager Joe Maddon and a hungry collection of players who reported to spring training feeling as if there's unfinished business to tend to after losing to eventual World Series champion Boston in the AL division round.
''I love that our guys feel and think that way. I think it's great,'' Maddon said.
''You'll hear that rhetoric in a lot of clubhouses, whether it's baseball, football or basketball, but you've got to back it up. You have to really believe it. Not just say it,'' he said. ''Some groups say it because they're supposed to say it. Some groups say it because they believe it. Our guys believe it.''
That confidence was bolstered by the Rays' ability to keep most of the key components from last year's roster together, including lefty David Price, who anchors one of baseball's deepest pitching rotations.
Price and just about everybody else expected the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner to be traded, however the Rays wound up giving him a $14 million one-year deal, in addition to re-signing first baseman James Loney and landing free agent closer Grant Balfour in moves that represent a big chunk of a club-record payroll of around $80 million.
Andrew Friedman, the team's vice president of baseball operations, also traded for catcher Ryan Hanigan and infielder Logan Forsythe to give Maddon additional flexibility filling out a batting order around Longoria and 2013 AL rookie of the year Wil Myers.
''Talent can't win every game for you, but it's a good start,'' said Loney, who signed a three-year, $21 million deal - largest since Tampa Bay has given to a free agent since Stuart Sternberg became principal owner.
''If we can stay healthy, if we can do the things we're capable of doing,'' second baseman Ben Zobrist add, ''we certainly have as good or better chance than any other team in the league to win it all.''

The Tampa Bay Rays will seek to build on a successful turnaround to one of their longest road trips of the season as they return home.
Chris Archer will try to help do so with a better performance against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night than he had last month at Camden Yards.
It hardly looked like Tampa Bay (15-17) would finish anywhere close to .500 on its 10-game trek when it dropped four of the first five. The Rays, though, rebounded to take four of the final five, playing those games against AL East rivals Boston and New York in a span of about 75 hours.
Wil Myers hit his first inside-the-park homer and matched a career high with four RBIs in a 5-1 victory over the Yankees on Sunday. Myers had seven RBIs in the three-game set while going 6 for 16.
Desmond Jennings had his home run streak snapped at three games but went 3 for 4 to extend his hit streak to seven.
"I think we've kind of come together as a group and I think there's a lot of belief in the clubhouse," manager Joe Maddon told the team's official website. "Now we get to go home ... and let's be ready to play Tuesday night."
Maddon's club will try to continue its recent home success against Baltimore (15-14). Tampa Bay won seven of 10 meetings at Tropicana Field last season, including the final four matchups.
The Rays lost their only two games against the Orioles this season April 14 and 16 after winning 11 of the previous 13 matchups, and Archer (2-1, 4.84 ERA) had the worst outing of his career in the series opener.
The right-hander allowed seven runs and 12 hits over five innings in a 7-1 defeat. He bounced back to beat the Yankees 16-1 on April 19 with 6 2-3 innings of one-run ball, but he's since posted a 7.59 ERA in two starts.
Archer couldn't make it out of a miserable fifth inning Thursday against Boston, getting charged with five runs. He avoided a loss when the Rays rallied for a 6-5 victory.
Archer will face a Baltimore team that produced a combined three runs in back-to-back defeats in Minnesota over the weekend. The Orioles had outscored opponents 14-6 during a season high-tying three consecutive wins.
Nelson Cruz's home run accounted for all of the Orioles' offense in a 5-2 loss Sunday.
"Hopefully everybody will get some rest and finally we'll play some games at the same time in the same city in the same time zone," manager Buck Showalter told the team's website.
Chris Tillman (3-1, 3.68) will try to end his recent struggles against Tampa Bay. The right-hander has gone 1-4 with a 5.14 ERA in his last five matchups, the most recent Aug. 19.
Tillman's latest start Thursday against Pittsburgh ended in the fifth inning due to a rain delay. He was charged with three runs in 4 2-3 innings and has a 7.63 ERA in his last three outings after posting a 0.84 mark in his first three.
Jennings is 2 for 13 against Tillman and Myers is 0 for 3, while Evan Longoria has gone 10 for 24 with four homers - his second-highest home run total against any pitcher.
J.J. Hardy and Matt Wieters went a combined 6 for 6 with three doubles against Archer on April 14.
