KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN FRANCISCO: HITTING: The Giants scored the second-fewest runs in the majors. But the additions of OF MELKY CABRERA (.305 BA, 18 HR, 87 RBI, 102 runs) and OF ANGEL PAGAN (32 SB) at the top of the order will certainly help. C BUSTER POSEY's surgically repaired ankle should be fully healed for the start of the season, and the 25-year-old's .368 OBP is certainly needed. 3B PABLO SANDOVAL was the team's best hitter in 2011 (.315 BA, 23 HR, 70 RBI) and was the only legitimate power source. The right side of the infield consists of veteran players past their prime. 1B AUBREY HUFF had his worst season, hitting .246 with 12 HR, but the 35-year-old will continue to bat in the middle of the lineup. 2B FREDDY SANCHEZ, 34, missed 50+ games for the third straight year as he suffered a torn labrum. SS BRANDON CRAWFORD has a slick glove but he's not close to being a legitimate major-league hitter (.204 career BA). OF BRANDON BELT, 23, has future star potential, but will be in a reserve role. OF NATE SCHIERHOLTZ (.756 OPS) provides a reliable bat in right field.
STARTING PITCHING: San Francisco ranked second in the majors in ERA (3.28), strikeouts (5.4 per game) and Opp. BA (.237). TIM LINCECUM was the ace once again with a 2.74 ERA and 220 strikeouts, but carried a sub-.500 record (13-14). Including playoffs, Lincecum has thrown an average of 230 innings per season since 2008. MATT CAIN also had a phenomenal year, carting a 2.88 ERA, team-best 1.08 WHIP and fanning 179 batters. He allowed only nine home runs in 221.2 innings of work. 22-year-old lefty MADISON BUMGARNER had a solid first full season, finishing with a 3.21 ERA, and a 4.2 K-to-BB ratio (191 strikeouts, 46 walks). RYAN VOGELSONG was an unbelievable story, returning to the majors for the first time since 2006 and going 13-7 with a 2.71 ERA. Although he's 34, his arm has plenty of innings left. BARRY ZITO will likely earn the final spot in the rotation as prospect ERIC SURKAMP gets more seasoning in Triple-A. Zito posted a career-worst 5.87 ERA while Surkamp carted a 1.84 WHIP in six starts.
RELIEF PITCHING: The success of the San Francisco bullpen hinges on BRIAN WILSON, who had a down year (1.47 WHIP, 54 K, 31 BB) because of elbow problems. Surgery was not required for his ailment, so expect a nice bounce-back season from this elite closer. If Wilson gets injured again, SERGIO ROMO could get called upon in the late innings. But even if he doesn't save a game, he still has plenty of value as a set-up man, notching a gaudy 13.1 strikeout rate and 0.71 WHIP last year. In 48 innings, he struck out 70 batters and only walked five. JEREMY AFFELDT is the top lefty in the Giants pen. He notched a strong 2.63 ERA and also tallied a career-best 1.15 WHIP last year.
TAMPA BAY: HITTING: OF DESMOND JENNINGS' on-base skills will lead to tons of runs and SBs despite his mediocre batting average. 2B BEN ZOBRIST bounced back from a disappointing 2010, and will continue to produce near the top of the batting order. Though a series of nagging injuries plagued his 2011 season, 3B EVAN LONGORIA slugged 17 HR in his last 53 games. Fully healthy this season, he'll be an elite power-hitter with double-digit SB potential. OF B.J. UPTON's days in Tampa may be numbered. He's an elite athlete, but he just might lose his head if he's traded into a tough situation. After a hot start, OF MATT JOYCE settled in as the productive hitter he is. He should get to play every day in right field. SSs SEAN RODRIGUEZ and REID BRIGNAC will battle for ABs but neither hits on a consistent basis. C JOSE MOLINA was acquired for his defense much more than his hitting. DH LUKE SCOTT can also play some 1B when slugger CARLOS PENA, who is returning to Tampa after hitting 28 homers for the Cubs in 2011, needs a rest.
STARTING PITCHING: DAVID PRICE was a little more hittable than in 2010, but he increased his already-high strikeout rate while cutting back on walks. His win total should rise from a disappointing 12 last year. JAMES SHIELDS put his 2010 disaster season behind him and became a Cy Young candidate. His peripheral stats and skills weren't all that different the past two years, it was a big swing of luck. Some people are putting out the Bust Alert on Rookie of the Year JEREMY HELLICKSON. He had the league's luckiest batting average on balls in play (.217), but he improved as last season progressed. MATT MOORE may be this year's R.O.Y. after a dominant late-season call up. He'll be among the league leaders in strikeouts for years to come. WADE DAVIS is a mediocre pitcher who eats innings at the back of the rotation.
RELIEF PITCHING: KYLE FARNSWORTH looked as strong as he has in years, converting 25 of 31 saves in his first season with the Rays. He's the closer again this year, but it won't take much for him to lose that job after an unsteady last third of the 2011 season. JOEL PERALTA may overtake Farnsworth for ninth-inning duties at some point this season. Peralta was 5-for-5 on saves in September when Farnsworth was hurt, and gave up only one run in his final 21.3 innings. Possible future closer JAKE McGEE progressed nicely after a tough start to 2011. He's got potentially lethal stuff. Former Angels hurler FERNANDO RODNEY is looking to bounce back after a wild season (28 walks, 26 strikeouts in 32 IP).

*Giants-Rays Preview* =====================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer

San Francisco (48-59) at Tampa Bay (64-44), 7:10 p.m. EDT

David Price has battled through early-season struggles and an extended stint on the disabled list to regain the form that has made him one of baseball's top pitchers.

Just when it seems Tim Lincecum has done the same, he's more often than not fallen back into a rut.

Price's Tampa Bay Rays host Lincecum's San Francisco Giants in a matchup of former Cy Young Award winners Saturday night.

As if going 1-4 with a 5.24 ERA through his first nine starts after winning the 2012 AL Cy Young wasn't bad enough, Price (6-5, 3.57 ERA) suffered a strained left triceps in a loss to Boston on May 15 that would land him on the DL for the next six weeks.

He's been stellar since his return, though, going 5-1 with a 1.68 ERA in six outings and tossing three complete games in his last five. He had completed four games in his previous 130 starts.

Price won his third straight outing after allowing one run and two hits in 7 1-3 innings of Monday's 2-1 win over the Red Sox. He retired the only batter he faced after being sent out following a 39-minute rain delay, a decision manager Joe Maddon regretted.

"The guy's way too important to the franchise, and he's way too important to himself to jeopardize it on July 29," Maddon said.

Price hasn't faced the Giants, who never seem to know what they're going to get from Lincecum (5-11, 4.61).

The 2008 and '09 NL Cy Young winner has one win since beating Toronto on June 4, pitching a no-hitter while striking out 13 in a 9-0 victory at San Diego on July 13.

Lincecum, though, followed that gem by giving up eight runs in 3 2-3 innings of an 11-0 loss to Cincinnati on July 22. The right-hander then gave up two runs in seven innings while striking out 10 against the Cubs in a 2-1 defeat on Sunday.

"It's a shame we couldn't get him the win," manager Bruce Bochy said.

Inconsistency, though, has been nothing new for Lincecum, who is 1-6 with a 4.42 ERA despite 63 strikeouts in 55 innings over his last nine starts. He's made it through four starts without allowing an earned run this season, only to have gone 0-3 with a 9.14 ERA in the four outings immediately after those solid performances.

Lincecum will try to help deal the Rays (64-45) a third consecutive defeat after the Giants (49-59) took Friday's series opener 3-1. Brandon Belt broke out of a 1-for-19 slump by going 3 for 4 with a solo homer and an RBI triple in his first start since getting three days off to work on his swing.

"Mentally I've stayed in there pretty well," Belt said. "There's just some things that I need to work on to tap into my ability a little more."

Brandon Crawford followed Belt's triple with a two-run homer as San Francisco won its third straight after dropping eight of its previous nine.

Tampa Bay is on the verge of losing three straight for the first time since June 16-18 as its lineup has gone cold. The Rays' only run Friday came on Ben Zobrist's RBI single in the third after they mustered just three hits in a 7-0 loss to Arizona on Wednesday.

"There's an ebb and flow to the season; you get hot at some moments and sometimes you don't," Maddon said.

Tampa had won 12 of its previous 13 at home prior to dropping the last two. The Giants have won six of eight on the road.
