| |  | MIAMI: HITTING: Ozzie Guillen takes over as manager for the newly named Miami Marlins, who will open their new retractable-roof Marlins Ballpark in 2012. Indoor games could generate more offense, but the fences are pretty deep (340' to left, 384' to 392' power alleys, 416' center and 335' right). New SS JOSE REYES led the NL with a .337 average and posted a career-best .384 OBP. Malcontent HANLEY RAMIREZ will reluctantly move to 3B, but hopefully he will play harder under Guillen than he has under the previous two skippers. OF GIANCARLO STANTON hit 34 HR last year and will drive in 100 if Ramirez stays healthy. OF LOGAN MORRISON cranked 23 bombs, but his batting average dipped to .247 with this new-found power. 1B GABY SANCHEZ fizzled after August 1 (.211 BA), but still had 19 HR and 78 RBI. OF EMILIO BONIFACIO swiped 40 bases and led the team with a .296 average, but he'll move down the order because of Reyes. C JOHN BUCK and 2B OMAR INFANTE's jobs are secure, but 22-year-old prospect MATT DOMINGUEZ might start 2012 in Triple-A instead of sitting and watching Ramirez and Sanchez at the corner infield spots.
STARTING PITCHING: JOSH JOHNSON is dominant when healthy, but he's made only 88 starts over the past five seasons. His shoulder feels great after surgery last year, and he expects to take the mound on Opening Day. MARK BUEHRLE followed his former manager and signed a 4-year, $58M deal with Miami. The 33-year-old lefty was 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA last year, his 11th straight season of 200+ IP and 10+ wins. RICKY NOLASCO once again had 10 wins and a strong K-to-BB ratio (3.4), but also sported an 8.18 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in his final eight starts. ANIBAL SANCHEZ posted a second straight productive season, fanning 202 batters in 196.1 innings. He did give up twice as many HR (20) as he did in 2010 though. CARLOS ZAMBRANO will begin 2012 in the rotation, but where he ends up is anybody's guess. If Guillen can motivate him, Zambrano has plenty of innings left in his 30-year-old arm.
RELIEF PITCHING: The signing of HEATH BELL to a three-year deal gives the Marlins a reliable long-term closer for the first time since Robb Nen in the mid-'90s. Bell's numbers could suffer a bit with the move to a smaller ballpark and an alarming drop in strikeout rate (11.1 in 2010 to 7.3 in 2011), but he still throws 94 mph. STEVE CISHEK will be the main set-up man for Bell and could see a handful of saves, converting all three opportunities last year and fanning 55 batters in 54.2 innings. MIKE DUNN is the lefty set-up man in this bullpen. He has great stuff (100 K in 86 career innings), but remains extremely wild (53 walks in those 86 IP). | | TAMPA BAY: HITTING: OF DESMOND JENNINGS' on-base skills will lead to tons of runs and SBs despite his mediocre batting average. 2B BEN ZOBRIST bounced back from a disappointing 2010, and will continue to produce near the top of the batting order. Though a series of nagging injuries plagued his 2011 season, 3B EVAN LONGORIA slugged 17 HR in his last 53 games. Fully healthy this season, he'll be an elite power-hitter with double-digit SB potential. OF B.J. UPTON's days in Tampa may be numbered. He's an elite athlete, but he just might lose his head if he's traded into a tough situation. After a hot start, OF MATT JOYCE settled in as the productive hitter he is. He should get to play every day in right field. SSs SEAN RODRIGUEZ and REID BRIGNAC will battle for ABs but neither hits on a consistent basis. C JOSE MOLINA was acquired for his defense much more than his hitting. DH LUKE SCOTT can also play some 1B when slugger CARLOS PENA, who is returning to Tampa after hitting 28 homers for the Cubs in 2011, needs a rest.
STARTING PITCHING: DAVID PRICE was a little more hittable than in 2010, but he increased his already-high strikeout rate while cutting back on walks. His win total should rise from a disappointing 12 last year. JAMES SHIELDS put his 2010 disaster season behind him and became a Cy Young candidate. His peripheral stats and skills weren't all that different the past two years, it was a big swing of luck. Some people are putting out the Bust Alert on Rookie of the Year JEREMY HELLICKSON. He had the league's luckiest batting average on balls in play (.217), but he improved as last season progressed. MATT MOORE may be this year's R.O.Y. after a dominant late-season call up. He'll be among the league leaders in strikeouts for years to come. WADE DAVIS is a mediocre pitcher who eats innings at the back of the rotation.
RELIEF PITCHING: KYLE FARNSWORTH looked as strong as he has in years, converting 25 of 31 saves in his first season with the Rays. He's the closer again this year, but it won't take much for him to lose that job after an unsteady last third of the 2011 season. JOEL PERALTA may overtake Farnsworth for ninth-inning duties at some point this season. Peralta was 5-for-5 on saves in September when Farnsworth was hurt, and gave up only one run in his final 21.3 innings. Possible future closer JAKE McGEE progressed nicely after a tough start to 2011. He's got potentially lethal stuff. Former Angels hurler FERNANDO RODNEY is looking to bounce back after a wild season (28 walks, 26 strikeouts in 32 IP). |

Miami (13-36) at Tampa Bay (24-24), 3:10 p.m. EDT
The Miami Marlins have been punchless over the previous two seasons against the Tampa Bay Rays.
It only figures to get worse for them in 2013.
The Rays look to take advantage of baseball's worst team in the first of four straight against Miami on Monday.
These in-state foes play two games at Tropicana Field before a pair in Miami on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Marlins (13-37) are off to the worst start in franchise history and the poorest in the majors since the 2006 Kansas City Royals had the same record. No NL team has started this slowly since the 1987 San Diego Padres were 11-39.
They averaged 3.0 runs in losing nine of 12 over the last two years to Tampa Bay (25-24) in the 'Citrus Series.'
Those Marlins teams were poor offensively, with the 2011 club averaging 3.9 runs and last year's 3.8. That's a far cry from what Miami is producing this year - 2.6 runs per game.
The last teams to average fewer than three runs were the 1972 Texas Rangers (2.99) and 1972 California Angels (2.93).
Miami has been particularly bad offensively while losing 15 of 18, batting .207 with just six homers and averaging 1.9 runs.
Tampa Bay was scuffling for runs with 11 total during a three-game slide before breaking out in Sunday's 8-3 victory over the Yankees. Sean Rodriguez and James Loney each hit a two-run homer.
"You put up eight runs against the Yankees, definitely something good, but the `W' is all that matters," Rodriguez said.
Evan Longoria had a quiet weekend series with three hits in 13 at-bats, and he's gone five straight games without an RBI. He has never enjoyed much success against the Marlins, hitting .227 in 24 games.
Longoria and the Rays will get their first look at Miami starter Jose Fernandez (2-2, 3.31), a right-hander who is limiting hitters to a .215 average.
Fernandez is 2-0 with a 2.48 ERA over his last five starts, yielding one run over five innings Tuesday in a 7-3 home defeat to Philadelphia.
"Every time I can go out there and give the team a chance to win and a chance to stay in the ballgame, I'm happy," Fernandez said.
Tampa Bay will also start a rookie right-hander in Jake Odorizzi (0-0, 5.40), who gave up three runs over five innings last Monday in his club debut in a 7-5 loss at Toronto.
Odorizzi, whose previous big-league experience consists of two starts for Kansas City in 2012, is taking the place in the rotation of the injured David Price.
One young player who may have some extra incentive for the Marlins is Derek Dietrich, drafted in the second round by the Rays in 2010. Dietrich was traded to Miami on Dec. 4, 2012, in a deal that brought Yunel Escobar - acquired by the Marlins a month earlier in the Josh Johnson deal - to Tampa Bay.
Dietrich, hitting .232 overall but with two homers in his last three games, was promoted to the major leagues on May 8 for Miami.
The Marlins have dropped five straight after scoring seven runs over the weekend in a three-game set against the White Sox.
