| | | SEATTLE: HITTING: C/DH JESUS MONTERO was brought over from the Yankees to hit in the heart of the order. At age 22, his offensive potential is scary. OF ICHIRO SUZUKI is entering the twilight of his career, but he might still have another .300 season left. 2B DUSTIN ACKLEY is the kind of line-drive hitter who fits well in Safeco, but he needs to catch up to MLB pitching. 1B JUSTIN SMOAK has disappointed, but he's making strides and has 30-HR upside. OF CASPER WELLS could play everyday. He won't hit for average, but has the power Seattle needs. MIKE CARP figures to at least grab early at-bats against righties. He'll strike out, but has lots of power. OF FRANKLIN GUTIERREZ is out for at least a month with a pectoral injury, but will reclaim his starting gig based on his defense. Seattle would love to see OF MICHAEL SAUNDERS step up to replace Gutierrez, but he's shown no signs of being able to handle MLB pitching. C MIGUEL OLIVO still has solid power, but he's an all-or-nothing hitter. 3B CHONE FIGGINS isn't quite done, but he's close. He'll have to battle line-drive hitting KYLE SEAGER for a job. SS BRENDAN RYAN will stick around for defense, but his bat is barely good enough for a regular gig. STARTING PITCHING: FELIX HERNANDEZ had a touch of bad luck last year, but he's one of the few pitchers in baseball who's a lock for 200 strikeouts. JASON VARGAS just keeps throwing strikes and letting his defense make plays. He'll get by fine again in spacious Safeco. BLAKE BEAVAN doesn't have a strikeout pitch, but he'll make few mistakes and get some outs thanks to a strong defense. HECTOR NOESI, who also came over from New York with Montero, isn't a big strikeout pitcher, but has good control and is savvy enough to get his shot in Seattle's rotation this year. 37-year-old journeyman KEVIN MILLWOOD will fill out the fifth spot in the rotation after a solid spring. Top prospect DANNY HULTZEN could break into the bigs in 2012. The lefty has the polish of a big leaguer right now, though his ceiling is more good-not-great. RELIEF PITCHING: Like many rebuilding teams, the Mariners will continue to shop their closer. BRANDON LEAGUE will pick up saves in Seattle, but he's more of a groundball pitcher than a strikeout artist. He'd likely be ticketed for a set-up role elsewhere. If League is traded, the closer role is wide open. SHAWN KELLEY came back from Tommy John surgery late last year and looked as good as ever. If he picks up where he left off last year, he'd be an obvious choice for ninth inning duties. CHANCE RUFFIN, part of the Doug Fister trade, has a strong minor-league track record. He could carve out a big role in this bullpen if he can improve his command. | | ST LOUIS: HITTING: Alienate and trade your talented young centerfielder for bullpen scraps and a middling, impending free-agent starter. Justify your ludicrous pitching changes by blaming crowd noise and your innocent bullpen coach'and you too could win a World Series! This was Tony La Russa baseball. But he's gone now, as is the all-world Albert Pujols. SS RAFAEL FURCAL liked his short stint in the Show Me State enough to sign up for more. OF CARLOS BELTRAN will hit second after an impressive 2011 campaign during which he produced solid numbers in pitchers' parks amidst weak lineups. 2Bs TYLER GREENE and DANIEL DESCALSO are the latest plucky 'gamer' to play infield at Busch. Resuscitated slugger 1B LANCE BERKMAN shifts to a much more suitable defensive position. OF MATT HOLLIDAY's OPS remains as strong as ever. 3B DAVID FREESE will never have to buy a drink in Missouri again after his postseason heroics. C YADIER MOLINA is a defensive whiz behind the plate and an underrated hitter. OFs ALLEN CRAIG and JON JAY are more suited to platoon roles, but Jay will be starting in center on Opening Day. STARTING PITCHING: His stuff isn't nearly what it used to be, and he's more than earned his reputation within the game as a towering crybaby. But on the mound, CHRIS CARPENTER remains ruthlessly effective when he's healthy. But he'll miss the first couple of months of the 2012 campaign due to shoulder problems. ADAM WAINWRIGHT should be ready to go on Opening Day, and has shown every reason to think he'll be his old brilliant self. JAIME GARCIA cannot sustain a sub-2.00 ERA for a full season. He's a mid-rotation starter, but one of the better ones in all of baseball. Did KYLE LOHSE really register a 1.17 WHIP over an entire season? Really? He just doesn't miss enough bats to keep that going. JAKE WESTBROOK stayed healthy for a full season again, which is a relief given his past dalliances with the DL. He's an innings eater who's capable of another dozen wins. LANCE LYNN gives the Cardinals enviable depth in the rotation. He'll probably slide back to the bullpen once Carpenter returns. Uber-prospect SHELBY MILLER could be a second-half call-up. RELIEF PITCHING: It doesn't look pretty when JASON MOTTE winds up and delivers a pitch, but in the end, results are results. The converted catcher has finally nailed down the closer role that many predicted would be his a few years ago. The only way he loses it this time is if he hurts himself with that painful delivery. FERNANDO SALAS can more than hold his own if that happens. He'll slot into the eighth-inning role, but he provides more of the pitching depth that is a hallmark of this Cardinals team. KYLE McCLELLAN, like Lynn, is serviceable both in relief or in the rotation. But he's better in the former role. |

*Mariners-Cardinals Preview* ============================
Seattle (65-82) at St. Louis (86-61), 2:15 p.m. EDT
The St. Louis Cardinals are having more than their share of trouble with the unfamiliar Seattle Mariners starters this weekend.
Mariners starters have not allowed a run in this series, which concludes Sunday with Erasmo Ramirez getting the ball for Seattle at Busch Stadium.
St. Louis (86-62), tied with Pittsburgh for the NL Central lead, has managed five hits in 13 innings against Seattle's starters in splitting the first two games. Hisashi Iwakuma lasted seven innings in the Mariners' 2-1, 10-inning loss Friday before rookie James Paxton pitched six innings to record Saturday's 4-1 victory.
"There's nothing wrong with us getting a couple of hits early," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, who has watched his club average 3.0 runs while batting .164 over its last five games. "There's nothing wrong with getting a couple of runs."
The Cardinals had never seen those pitchers before and face the same situation Sunday against Ramirez (5-1, 4.57 ERA), who is 3-0 with a 4.15 ERA in five road starts.
"We've faced the Pirates 100 times and we know exactly what A.J. Burnett has, we know what Francisco Liriano has, and those kinds of guys," St. Louis second baseman Matt Carpenter said. "Then we come in here and we've got these guys, and nobody knows anything about anybody."
Ramirez is making his first 2013 interleague start after going 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two outings last year as a rookie. The right-hander enters after throwing six-plus scoreless innings last Sunday in a 4-1 home defeat to Tampa Bay.
"I thought Erasmo was good," manager Eric Wedge said. "I loved his aggressiveness early in the game and he was able to hang on to it and sustain it."
Although the Cardinals are battling for the playoffs and the Mariners (66-82) will miss the postseason for the 12th straight year, a victory by Seattle on Sunday would give both teams 9-11 interleague marks.
Numerous St. Louis hitters are scuffling. Yadier Molina is hitless in 15 at-bats as part of a 6-for-47 slump, David Freese had two hits in 16 at-bats, Carlos Beltran is in a 3-for-21 slide and Jon Jay a 1-for-13 skid.
Carpenter has carried the offense by reaching base in 14 straight games, batting .370 with 15 runs scored in that span.
Kendrys Morales homered for the fifth time in 10 games Saturday as Seattle ended a five-game slide. Morales is 6 for 11 in his last three, including 4 for 8 in this series.
None of Seattle's hitters has faced the Cardinals' Shelby Miller (13-9, 3.05), who enters off a scoreless effort like Ramirez. Miller pitched 6 2-3 innings to earn Tuesday's 4-2 win over Milwaukee, improving to 8-3 with a 1.76 ERA in 14 home starts.
The right-hander is bidding to become the first St. Louis rookie to win 14 games since Dick Hughes won 16 for the 1967 World Series champions. Miller is 1-2 with a 6.87 ERA in four interleague starts.
Seattle leadoff hitter Brad Miller was removed Saturday with a mild left hamstring strain after running out a sacrifice bunt in the fifth. He is day to day.
