| |  | TEXAS: HITTING: 2B IAN KINSLER will lead off again. A few less at-'em balls and he's an MVP candidate. SS ELVIS ANDRUS is coming along offensively, but his poor SB% could lead to fewer attempts. Injuries are the only thing that will keep OF JOSH HAMILTON out of the MVP discussion. He'll likely start declining at age 35, but DH MICHAEL YOUNG can't help but put up numbers batting cleanup in this lineup. 3B ADRIAN BELTRE was unstoppable in Arlington. Like Hamilton, he's an MVP candidate if healthy. Injuries are piling up for OF NELSON CRUZ, who still has monster power but doesn't run as much anymore. C MIKE NAPOLI is MLB's best offensive catcher and will play some 1B on 'off' days. Because their lineup is stacked, Texas can play defensive-minded/offensively limited 1B MITCH MORELAND. And because Ron Washington would prefer to play Hamilton in left, speedy CF CRAIG GENTRY looks to have the edge over DAVID MURPHY for the starting job in center. Cuban import LEONYS MARTIN will start the season in Triple-A, but JULIO BORBON could earn a significant OF role.
STARTING PITCHING: COLBY LEWIS can overpower when he's on, but as a flyball pitcher in cozy Arlington he's going to have a handful of ugly days. The much-ballyhooed YU DARVISH brings a deep arsenal of pitches and a durable frame from Japan. He's probably the best Japanese arm to ever cross the Pacific. Lefty MATT HARRISON solidified his rotation spot. He has topped out as a respectable No. 3-type starter. DEREK HOLLAND has top-of-the-rotation upside. Consistency has been an issue, but hopefully another year and some big postseason moments helped to cure that. The big story is NEFTALI FELIZ moving to the rotation. He was considered a future ace in the minors, but the transition might not be easy. His K/BB ratio plummeted last year and his flyball tendencies could spell disaster in Arlington. Keep in mind the Rangers made a successful closer-to-ace switch with C.J. Wilson. Top prospect MARTIN PEREZ could be an option in the second half.
RELIEF PITCHING: Veteran JOE NATHAN was brought in and handed the closer's job. He struggled in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, but most pitchers who've had the procedure don't come all the way back until their second full season. If Nathan falters, MIKE ADAMS could be next in line. He had no trouble transitioning from pitcher-friendly San Diego in the National League to hitter-friendly Arlington and the A.L.'s superior bats. KOJI UEHARA would also be in the closer discussion if Nathan falters, but he was unhappy about being traded from Baltimore and faltered for the Rangers late last year. ALEXI OGANDO got a huge boost from his defense and his bullpen before a late-season collapse. He threw by far a career-high in innings; better stamina would allow him to take the next step and possibly rejoin the rotation. | | ST LOUIS: HITTING: Alienate and trade your talented young centerfielder for bullpen scraps and a middling, impending free-agent starter. Justify your ludicrous pitching changes by blaming crowd noise and your innocent bullpen coach'and you too could win a World Series! This was Tony La Russa baseball. But he's gone now, as is the all-world Albert Pujols. SS RAFAEL FURCAL liked his short stint in the Show Me State enough to sign up for more. OF CARLOS BELTRAN will hit second after an impressive 2011 campaign during which he produced solid numbers in pitchers' parks amidst weak lineups. 2Bs TYLER GREENE and DANIEL DESCALSO are the latest plucky 'gamer' to play infield at Busch. Resuscitated slugger 1B LANCE BERKMAN shifts to a much more suitable defensive position. OF MATT HOLLIDAY's OPS remains as strong as ever. 3B DAVID FREESE will never have to buy a drink in Missouri again after his postseason heroics. C YADIER MOLINA is a defensive whiz behind the plate and an underrated hitter. OFs ALLEN CRAIG and JON JAY are more suited to platoon roles, but Jay will be starting in center on Opening Day.
STARTING PITCHING: His stuff isn't nearly what it used to be, and he's more than earned his reputation within the game as a towering crybaby. But on the mound, CHRIS CARPENTER remains ruthlessly effective when he's healthy. But he'll miss the first couple of months of the 2012 campaign due to shoulder problems. ADAM WAINWRIGHT should be ready to go on Opening Day, and has shown every reason to think he'll be his old brilliant self. JAIME GARCIA cannot sustain a sub-2.00 ERA for a full season. He's a mid-rotation starter, but one of the better ones in all of baseball. Did KYLE LOHSE really register a 1.17 WHIP over an entire season? Really? He just doesn't miss enough bats to keep that going. JAKE WESTBROOK stayed healthy for a full season again, which is a relief given his past dalliances with the DL. He's an innings eater who's capable of another dozen wins. LANCE LYNN gives the Cardinals enviable depth in the rotation. He'll probably slide back to the bullpen once Carpenter returns. Uber-prospect SHELBY MILLER could be a second-half call-up.
RELIEF PITCHING: It doesn't look pretty when JASON MOTTE winds up and delivers a pitch, but in the end, results are results. The converted catcher has finally nailed down the closer role that many predicted would be his a few years ago. The only way he loses it this time is if he hurts himself with that painful delivery. FERNANDO SALAS can more than hold his own if that happens. He'll slot into the eighth-inning role, but he provides more of the pitching depth that is a hallmark of this Cardinals team. KYLE McCLELLAN, like Lynn, is serviceable both in relief or in the rotation. But he's better in the former role. |

The Texas Rangers got a much-needed boost with a successful series that ended in thrilling fashion.
That also provided a fitting prelude for a highly anticipated rematch.
In their first visit to St. Louis since a dramatic 2011 World Series, the Rangers will try to keep their momentum going against the Cardinals on Friday night.
Texas (41-32) had lost six in a row - its longest skid in three seasons - before winning three of four over AL West-leading Oakland this week. The Rangers held on for a 4-3 win in Thursday's series finale after catcher A.J. Pierzynski tagged Josh Donaldson for the game's final out.
The victory pushed Texas within one game of Oakland in the division.
"Any win right now is special, especially against a good team like the A's, especially to win the series," said shortstop Elvis Andrus, who made the relay throw to Pierzynski.
The Rangers now face the owners of the best record in the majors and visit a stadium where one of the franchise's most heartbreaking losses occurred.
Texas was one strike away from winning its first World Series title in 2011 until David Freese hit a game-tying triple in Game 6. The eventual World Series MVP also hit the winning home run in the 11th inning and had an early two-run double in a 6-2 victory in Game 7.
"It's going to be fun to go back there. I know a lot of people are going to talk about Game 6, but it's just another game in the regular season for us," Andrus told the team's website. "You kind of go back and think how close we were, but things happen for a reason. It helped us as a team, and hopefully we get in that situation soon."
Like the Rangers, the Cardinals (47-26) have won three of four this week, but their series victory came against one of the NL's worst teams - the Chicago Cubs. Matt Holliday homered and drove in two runs Thursday as St. Louis beat the Cubs 6-1.
"It was a great series. Any time you can win three of four it's really good," said Allen Craig, who had a pinch-hit, two-run single. "We played really good baseball."
Craig has 11 RBIs in his last 10 games, Holliday is batting .381 in his last 17 and now they both will try to help hand Derek Holland (5-4, 3.30 ERA) a third straight defeat.
The left-hander has been tagged for eight runs and 19 hits in 10 1-3 innings over his last two starts, losing to Cleveland and Toronto.
Holland, though, is 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA in his last four road starts and 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA in two outings against NL opponents this season. The left-hander won his only start against St. Louis, throwing 8 1-3 scoreless innings in Game 4 of the 2011 World Series.
He'll be opposed by another struggling pitcher, Tyler Lyons (2-3, 4.65). The rookie left-hander is 0-3 with a 7.41 ERA in three starts this month after going 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his first two games in the majors.
Lyons gave up a career-high six runs over 5 1-3 innings Sunday in a 7-2 loss at Miami.
The Cardinals and Rangers are meeting for only the second time in the regular season. St. Louis won two of three in Texas from June 11-13, 2004.
