Angels calling up Peters for finale vs. Mariners

The Los Angeles Angels were scheduled to start left-hander Andrew Heaney in Sunday's series finale at Seattle.

Instead, he was placed on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation, just another in a long list of woes for the Angels' rotation.

The Angels said left-hander Dillon Peters (1-0, 4.15 ERA) will be recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to start Sunday against Mariners rookie lefty Yusei Kikuchi (4-6, 5.01 ERA).

Heaney pitched 4 1/3 innings against Houston on Tuesday, allowing two runs. He told MLB.com he first felt the issue during a July 6 start.

"I felt it before my start in Houston, pitched through it, then obviously let them know before the break, lining up the rotation, tried to get that extra rest, pitched last time, it just wasn't really any better," Heaney told MLB.com. "Tried to give it a few days after that start to see how it felt, wasn't really progressing any. I just felt this was the best move, to be more precautionary with it."

Heaney underwent an MRI but it didn't show any structural damage in his shoulder.

"It's just some inflammation, some stiffness," Heaney said. "I tried pitching through it. It just didn't really recover. It's something that if we get in front of it now, have a good two months at the end of the year hopefully, if we let it keep getting worse and worse and worse, not only does it make it harder to pitch, but it's also never really going to bounce back."

Heaney, who missed the first two months of the season with left elbow inflammation, was 1-3 with a 5.09 ERA.

"I don't think it's going to be anything surgical or anything like that," Angels manager Brad Ausmus said. "I think it's something of a tired, irritated shoulder."

That leaves the Angels with right-handers Griffin Canning, Felix Pena and Jaime Barria as their only healthy starters. Rookie left-hander Jose Suarez is eligible to return Thursday after being sent to the minors July 15 and they claimed lefty Adalberto Mejia off waivers from Minnesota.

Ausmus said the Angels don't have any plans to move Trevor Cahill into the rotation, and former starter JC Ramirez is still expected to work as a reliever when he returns from a 15-month rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery.

Peters has made four appearances this season, with three coming against the Mariners. He beat them June 8 in Anaheim, Calif., by allowing three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, with no walks and four strikeouts.

Kikuchi is 1-2 with a 10.91 ERA in four starts against the Angels this season. He didn't get a decision last Sunday against them, allowing three runs on two hits in four innings of a 6-3 defeat. He walked four and struck out three.

"They have a really good lineup, first and foremost, but if you look at the results (last Sunday), I didn't get hit around," Kikuchi told MLB.com through an interpreter after that game. "They had two hits, so the results weren't as bad as the last two starts."

The Angels evened the three-game series in Seattle with a 6-2 victory Saturday night, breaking a tie in the ninth by scoring four runs after the Mariners misplayed an infield popup. David Fletcher got the go-ahead hit and Mike Trout followed with a three-run homer, his 31st of the season.
