Who's gone? 1B Mark Teixeira, C Brian McCann, RHP Nate Eovaldi, RHP Kirby Yates, RHP Anthony Swarzak, RHP Nick Goody, RHP Blake Parker
Projected lineup: LF Brett Gardner (.261, 7 HR, 41 RBI, 16 SB), CF Jacoby Ellsbury (.263, 9, 56, 20), C Gary Sanchez (.299, 20, 42 in 53 games), DH Matt Holliday (.246, 20, 62 with Cardinals), 1B Greg Bird (did not play in 2016), 2B Starlin Castro (.270, 21, 70), 3B Chase Headley (.253, 14, 51), RH Aaron Judge (.179, 4, 10 in 27 games) or Aaron Hicks (.217, 8, 31), SS Tyler Wade (.259, 5, 27 at Double-A) or Ronald Torreyes (.258, 1, 12)
Rotation: RH Masahiro Tanaka (14-4, 3.07), LH C.C. Sabathia (9-12, 3.91), RH Michael Pineda (6-12, 4.82), RH Luis Severino (3-8, 5.83), RH Chad Green (2-4, 4.73) or RH Adam Warren (4-2, 3.26) or RH Luis Cessa (4-4, 4.35) or RH Bryan Mitchell (1-2, 3.24 in five games)
Key relievers: LH Aroldis Chapman (4-1, 1.55, 36/39 SV), RH Dellin Betances (3-6, 3.08), RH Tyler Clippard (3-6, 3.57), LH Tommy Layne (2-0, 3.38), LH Chasen Shreve (2-1, 5.18)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and right field. The starter's competition is not urgent ' the Yankees have five off-days in the first month of the season ' but it's interesting nonetheless. Green, Cessa, Warren and Mitchell combined to make 22 major league starts last season. None had an outstanding spring training, so the Yankees might choose to divide the load again. Some will go to Triple-A, others to the bullpen. Someone named Aaron (Judge or Hicks) will be the Yankees' right fielder this season. If either falters, Tyler Austin or Rob Refsnyder could seize their at-bats.
Outlook: The Yankees will employ fewer past-their-prime position players in 2017 than any season this decade. Is their next generation of homegrown talent ready to take over? Sanchez is the most advanced prospect ' the catcher hit 20 home runs in 53 games as a rookie ' but beyond him lies several question marks. Greg Bird, Clint Frazier, Gleyber Torres, Judge and Austin (who was stalled in camp by a foot injury) will get a chance once they're ready. The pitching staff is led by Tanaka and the ferocious bullpen combo of Chapman, Betances and Clippard. But depth is a real question mark, and there are no blue-chip prospects at Triple-A waiting for their moment.
SEATTLE: 2016: 86-76, second place
Manager: Scott Servais (second season)
Who's new? LF Jarrod Dyson, SS Jean Segura, IF Danny Valencia, RF Mitch Haniger, C Carlos Ruiz, C Tuffy Gosewich, RHP Yovani Gallardo, LHP Drew Smyly, LHP Marc Rzepczynski, RHP Casey Fien, RHP Chris Heston
Who's gone? OF Seth Smith, SS Ketel Marte, C Chris Iannetta, OF Nori Aoki, RHP Taijuan Walker, RHP Nathan Karns, LHP Vidal Nuno, LHP David Rollins, RHP Tom Wilhelmsen
Projected lineup: LF Jarrod Dyson (.278, 1 HR, 25 RBI, 30 SB with Royals), SS Jean Segura (.319, 20, 64, 33 with Diamondbacks), 2B Robinson Cano (.298, 39, 103), DH Nelson Cruz (.287, 43, 105), 3B Kyle Seager (.278, 30, 99), C Mike Zunino (.207, 12, 31), 1B Danny Valencia (.287, 17, 51 with A's), RF Mitch Haniger (.229, 5, 17 in 34 games with Diamondbacks), CF Leonys Martin (.247, 15, 47, 24 SB)
Rotation: RH Felix Hernandez (11-8, 3.82), RH Hisashi Iwakuma (16-12, 4.12), LH James Paxton (6-7, 3.79), RH Yovani Gallardo (6-8, 5.42 with Orioles), LH Drew Smyly (7-12, 4.88 with Rays)
Key relievers: RH Steve Cishek (4-6, 2.81, 25/32 SV), RH Edwin Diaz (0-4, 2.79, 18/21), RH Nick Vincent (4-4, 3.73), RH Evan Scribner (0-0, 0.00 in 12 games), LH Marc Rzepczynski (1-0, 2.64 with A's and Nationals), RH Casey Fien (1-1, 5.49 with Twins and Dodgers)
Hot spots: First base and right field. Veteran Valencia has the first baseman's job for now, but Dan Vogelbach is the heir apparent who will begin the season at Triple-A. Vogelbach, 24, slimmed down this offseason ' a necessity when you're 6 feet tall, weigh 250 pounds and expect to play your first full major league season ' and might have more weight to lose. Valencia, 32, has never been a full-time first baseman in seven seasons. Haniger is known more for his glove than his bat, but he struggled (.713 OPS) in limited time at a hitter-friendly park in Arizona last year. Safeco Field won't be as kind. Cruz will play right field if Haniger doesn't.
Outlook: General Manager Jerry Dipoto has paired a staff of fly-ball pitchers with three rangy outfielders, an exercise in team-building he once tried with the Angels. Dipoto caused a stir by executing 40 roster transactions during the offseason, but is it possible he didn't do enough? Haniger has never been atop a major league depth chart. Pitchers Gallardo and Smyly are coming off shaky seasons in Baltimore and Tampa Bay, respectively. On paper, the Mariners look like a top-heavy team without much help in the minors if the bottom falls out. That was the case for Dipoto with the Angels too, and sometimes it worked out OK. More often it didn't.

New Yankees get another shot at Mariners

SEATTLE -- Todd Frazier, David Robertson, Tommy Kahnle and the Chicago White Sox suffered a three-game sweep against Seattle last weekend.

Those three players will get another crack at the Mariners this week, only this time as members of the New York Yankees, who open a four-game series Thursday at Safeco Field.

Frazier, a third baseman who was a two-time National League All-Star, and right-handed relievers Robertson and Kahnle were acquired by the Yankees on Tuesday night in exchange for reliever Tyler Clippard and three prospects.

Robertson succeeded Mariano Rivera as the Yankees' closer in 2014 before signing with the White Sox after that season.

"Those are all guys that can come in here and help us accomplish what we're trying to accomplish," Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner told The New York Times.

Frazier hit a career-high 40 homers last season for the White Sox but has struggled in 2017, batting .206 with 16 home runs and 44 RBIs. He could play first base for the Yankees, who will be without Greg Bird until at least September after he underwent foot surgery Tuesday. On Wednesday against Minnesota, Frazier struck out as pinch-hitter and was hit by a pitch.

Robertson (4-2, 2.70 ERA, 13 saves) and Kahnle (1-3, 2.50 ERA with 60 strikeouts in 36 innings with the White Sox) should help shore up a Yankees bullpen that has 18 blown saves, the most in the majors. Kahnle made his New York debut in a 6-1 loss Wednesday, pitching a perfect inning with two strikeouts.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said the trade should send a message to his players.

"It should tell them, 'Hey, we're in this,'" Girardi told The Times. "We need to continue to play and play hard and play better than what we've done. But it should be a pick-me-up in there in a sense, like, hey, there's a lot of people who believe in this club."

The Yankees are scheduled to start right-hander Luis Severino (5-4, 3.40 ERA) in the series opener Thursday against Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez (5-3, 4.20).

Hernandez, who spent nearly two months on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation, has won his past two starts. He is 10-6 with a 3.13 ERA in 20 career starts against the Yankees. Hernandez has not faced New York this year.

Severino is 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA in one previous start against Seattle, last year.

While the Yankees (48-45) currently hold the second and final wild-card berth in the American League, the Mariners (48-48) are one of several teams still in playoff contention.

Seattle just completed a six-game trip to Chicago and Houston in which it went 5-1 to get back to the .500 mark. Closer Edwin Diaz earned saves in all five victories.

"For us, coming out of the (All-Star) break and starting off like this is huge," Mariners catcher Mike Zunino told The News Tribune of Tacoma. "We're recharged. Everyone is all in for this second-half push. Hopefully, we can keep this going and make a run at this thing."
