KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona's desert overhaul began last summer with the hire of Tony La Russa as chief baseball officer.
More hires followed: Dave Stewart as general manager, Joe Carter and De Jon Watson to front-office positions, Chip Hale as the new manager.
Now that the brain trust is in place, it's time to see what the new-look Diamondbacks can do on the field.
''I don't have a crystal ball. I just know we'll be competitive,'' La Russa said. ''I've said before, I'll be broken-hearted if we don't have a winning record this year.''
Arizona has fallen hard since winning the 2011 NL West crown, putting together a pair of .500 seasons before dropping to 64-98 a year ago, the worst record in baseball and second-worst in franchise history.
Some of it was injuries; the Diamondbacks lost three pitchers to Tommy John surgery and seemed to have every one of their top players get hurt at some point.
But La Russa and the rest of the front office also saw need for changes, which began during the trade deadline and continued during the offseason.
Gone are catcher Miguel Montero, third baseman Martin Prado, shortstop Didi Gregorius, along with pitchers Wade Miley and Brandon McCarthy.
Even with the losses, Arizona's lineup should be potent.
A.J. Pollock, Mark Trumbo and Paul Goldschmidt are all healthy after missing games last season and David Peralta returns in right field after a solid rookie season. Arizona also picked up Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas, who has potentially game-changing power.
But, as has been the case in the desert, pitching will be the big question
Arizona traded Miley to Boston and its opening day starter will be Josh Collmenter, an over-the-top-throwing right-hander who has bounced between the bullpen and the rotation during his four big-league seasons.
Patrick Corbin and Bronson Arroyo were part of the rotation last season, but both underwent Tommy John surgery and aren't expected to return until at least midseason.
The Diamondbacks picked up right-hander Rubby De La Rosa in the Miley trade and right-hander Jeremy Hellickson in another deal with Tampa Bay. Arizona also signed 21-year-old Cuban right-hander Yoan Lopez, who is competing for a spot in the rotation, and has right-handers Chase Anderson and Trevor Cahill back from last season.
For all the potential the Diamondbacks have with their bats, it won't matter much if the pitchers don't come through.
A few more things to look for from the 2015 Arizona Diamondbacks:
GOLDY SHINES: Goldschmidt was having another stellar season in 2014 when he was derailed by a broken hand at the start of August. Before his injury, the All-Star first baseman had become one of the best power hitters in the game and was runner-up in the NL MVP race in 2013, when he hit .302 with 26 homers and 125 RBIs. He felt good throughout spring training and expected to be back giving the Diamondbacks some consistent pop in the lineup.
REPLACING MONTERO: Arizona took a gamble during the offseason by trading Montero to the Chicago Cubs. A two-time All-Star, Montero was a steadying influence in the clubhouse and behind the plate, not to mention a power bat in the lineup. Now that he's gone, the Diamondbacks will turn to 31-year-old Tuffy Gosewisch, who has 179 career at-bats and didn't break into the majors until 2013 after eight years in the minors.
ADDING TOMAS: The Diamondbacks made a bit of an international splash by signing Tomas to a six-year, $68 million contract. The dilemma now is to figure out where to play him and how quickly he can adjust to playing in the big leagues. Arizona would like to play the 24-year-old at third base, but could move him to the outfield if he can't make the transition to a position he's never played. Tomas has plenty of raw ability and is young, so the Diamondbacks have high hopes for him - wherever he ends up playing.
HUDSON'S RETURN: Daniel Hudson was a consistent performer on Arizona's staff before having Tommy John surgery each of the past two seasons. He returned last September, pitching in the bullpen. The right-hander is expected to start the season in the bullpen, but could find a place back in the rotation if he remains healthy.
SEATTLE: SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano is one of the few on the Seattle Mariners roster who can speak with certainty about the playoffs. In his previous stop, Cano played in the postseason seven times and hoisted one World Series trophy.
When Cano looks at the roster the Mariners have put together for the 2015 season, he sees familiar traits.
''On paper we look like world champions,'' Cano said. ''But hopefully, God help us, we stay healthy and it's not how we look on paper, we have to go out and prove it every day.''
This time it's different for Seattle. Before the season begins the Mariners are viewed as favorites in the AL West.
It's been a rarity for most of Seattle's history for the Mariners to be the favorites and when they have been, they typically fell short. That's what makes this season equal parts exciting and concerning. They could be the team that reignites the fire in Seattle fans, or one that provides another disappointment.
''There's more of a buzz around the team from an outside perspective. Internally, we expected a lot out of ourselves last year and we did that for the most part, obviously coming one game short,'' third baseman Kyle Seager said. ''But this year it's a different feeling in the locker room. There's more of a confidence. There's more of a general trust in the guy next to you and confidence in the guy next to you.''
Cano's signing a year ago brought validity to what Seattle was trying to create. That was supplemented by the development of Seager into an All-Star and Gold Glove winner, and the best pitching staff in baseball led by AL Cy Young runner-up Felix Hernandez.
But it wasn't enough. The Mariners ended one-game short. Getting to 87 wins was a surprising achievement but left Seattle wanting more.
The Mariners have created a roster that has Cano optimistic about what Seattle can accomplish. Nelson Cruz, the major league leader in homers last season, adds punch and protection in the middle of the lineup. The Mariners upgraded their outfield with the additions of Justin Ruggiano and Seth Smith and the late signing of Rickie Weeks.
And while Hernandez remains the ace, Seattle's pitching staff could be even better because of youngsters James Paxton and Taijuan Walker.
''With the additions we made this offseason and guys getting that experience last year, being in a little bit of a race, I think this team's prepped and ready to make a run at the postseason,'' Paxton said.
Here are things to watch as Seattle looks to reach the postseason for the first time since 2001:
CRUZ CONTROL: The addition of Cruz is a massive upgrade for Seattle's offense. While with Baltimore, Cruz was the only hitter in baseball to reach 40 homers last season, and while that came in the friendly hitting confines of Camden Yards he's always been a strong hitter at Safeco Field. One of Cruz's biggest impacts is the trickle down on Seattle's lineup. He'll hit behind Cano and in front of Seager and no longer leaves the cleanup spot in Seattle's order a gaping hole.
GOOD TO BE THE KING: Hernandez is already driven by the desire to make the postseason. He may have gotten just a little more motivation by finishing second in the Cy Young voting to Cleveland's Corey Kluber. He set a major league record last season when he pitched 16 straight games of seven or more innings while allowing two earned runs or less. It was a brilliant stretch from May to early August, but wasn't good enough to get Seattle to the postseason or win the Cy Young.
PLATOON OR NO PLATOON: How manager Lloyd McClendon handles his situations in right and left field will be worth watching early in the season. Ultimately, it's a good thing for Seattle to have as many options as it does at those positions with Smith and Ruggiano in right field and Dustin Ackley and Weeks in left field. With the strengths of each player, it's likely Smith and Ackley will right-handed pitching and Weeks and Ruggiano against lefties. McClendon has said he doesn't view either situation as a platoon.
BEST BULLPEN: Fernando Rodney was the anchor of the best bullpen in baseball last year. He led baseball in saves with 48, but he was just part of what made Seattle successful late in games. Most of that bullpen crew is back, and for as good as Seattle's starters are expected to be, its relievers need to be equal to last season if the Mariners are going to match their expectations.

*Diamondbacks-Mariners Preview* ===============================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Arizona (48-51) at Seattle (46-55), 3:40 p.m. EDT

Felix Hernandez has already staked a claim as one of the best pitchers of his generation.

He'll match up for the first time Wednesday against Paul Goldschmidt, who is blossoming into one of the best hitters among those same peers.

Hernandez seeks his AL-leading 13th victory for the Seattle Mariners versus Goldschmidt and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks.

One of the front-runners to win his second Cy Young Award after finishing runner-up last season, Hernandez (12-5, 2.69 ERA) ranks 13th among active pitchers with 137 wins. The 29-year-old, making his franchise-record 324th start, is at least three years younger than each of the players ahead of him.

Being in opposite leagues has kept him from facing Goldschmidt to this point, however. Goldschmidt's .934 OPS ranks sixth among active players with at least 2,000 at-bats, and he currently leads the majors with 75 RBIs and ranks second with a .347 batting average. He's also 13 for 30 (.433) during a 10-game hitting streak after going 2 for 5 in Arizona's 8-4 victory Tuesday night.

It's unclear who has the edge, though, as Hernandez has been lights out over his last five starts, going 2-1 with a 1.09 ERA. He also boasts a 6-1 record and 1.56 ERA in his last 10 interleague starts.

Hernandez is 1-0 with a 2.51 ERA in two meetings with the Diamondbacks, whom he hasn't faced since 2009.

The Mariners (46-55) could use a strong start from their ace after giving up 25 runs while losing three of four.

Meanwhile, Arizona (48-51) is looking to match its season high with a fifth straight victory and has posted a 1.70 ERA during its winning streak. Ender Inciarte homered Tuesday and is 12 for 32 (.375) over his last seven games.

Patrick Corbin (1-3, 3.68) is in danger of losing a career-high fourth straight start, though it's partially due to bad luck - he's been given three runs of support in 17 innings during the losing streak.

The left-hander was excellent despite no backing Friday against Milwaukee, yielding only a solo homer by Ryan Braun over seven innings in a 2-1 loss.

Corbin has surrendered five home runs during his skid, accounting for six of the seven runs against him, and has a home run rate of 2.1 per nine innings on the season. He allowed 0.94 home runs per nine from 2012-13 prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Seattle's .299 on-base percentage against lefties is one of the majors' lowest, though Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager have both enjoyed success facing southpaws. Cruz, who is 14 for 37 (.378) during an eight-game hitting streak and hit his fifth homer in that span Tuesday, owns a .378 batting average against left-handers, while Seager is hitting .321. Though Seager's hitting streak was snapped at seven games, he has hit safely in 16 of 18 while scoring 15 runs.

Seven of Cruz's 26 homers have come in 13 interleague games.

Arizona catcher Welington Castillo was left out of the lineup after taking a pitch on the elbow Monday for the second time in three games. It's uncertain if he'll play Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks have averaged 8.4 runs while taking four of the last five meetings.
