KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHI WHITE SOX: CHICAGO (AP) - From rock bottom last season to contention this year? The Chicago White Sox see no reason why it can't happen.
They're ready to put last season's 99-loss wreck behind them and make a jump at least back to respectability, if not a run at the AL Central title.
They see a team with solid pitching, a new slugger in Jose Abreu and renewed vigor. Now, all they have to do is back it up.
''You have to pitch, you have to hit, you have to score,'' said manager Robin Ventura, entering his third season. ''You have to play defense. You have to do all of them in our division. Detroit has won it the last few years. They have a combination of everything. Unless you do that, you're not going to be close. We proved that last year.''
They had the pitching part down last season. The rest? Well, that's where things got dicey.
SEATTLE: SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano was just the start. The Seattle Mariners didn't stop with one major splash in trying to catch up with the best in the AL West.
Even so, there remain many questions about whether Seattle's additions as a whole can improve a team coming off a 71-win season.
The moves made by Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik were in hopes of improving the Mariners and solidifying his own future after a shaky offseason that started with Eric Wedge's decision not to return as manager.
Lloyd McClendon is getting his second shot as a major league manager nine years after he was last leading a club in Pittsburgh. Along with Cano, Seattle signed outfielder Corey Hart, closer Fernando Rodney and traded for designated hitter Logan Morrison.
Despite those moves, there remain concerns about the depth of Seattle's rotation beyond ace Felix Hernandez and whether players the Mariners have been waiting for to finally pop can establish themselves as reliable, everyday starters.
Yet the Mariners believe they will be competitive in one of baseball's toughest divisions.
''We're ready to win. That's what it's all about,'' Hernandez said. ''We're ready to win ballgames in Seattle. We're ready to be in the playoffs, we're ready to do that.''

*White Sox-Mariners Preview* ============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Chicago (55-62) at Seattle (61-54), 4:10 p.m. EDT

After having a four-game win streak snapped, the Seattle Mariners will try to get back on track by adding to John Danks' recent struggles.

The Chicago White Sox left-hander's latest start was one of the worst in his career and he'll seek to atone for that miserable performance in Sunday's finale in Seattle.

Seattle (61-55) fell just short of a season high-tying fifth straight win Saturday, losing 2-1 in 10 innings. Kyle Seager drove in the lone run for the Mariners, who scored 28 runs and batted .300 in their prior four games.

Seattle dropped 1 1/2 games behind Kansas City for the AL's second wild card after Conor Gillaspie hit a two-out RBI single in the 10th. The White Sox (56-62) snapped a four-game skid and earned just their second win in eight contests.

They're hoping next to see a better outing from Danks (9-7, 4.93 ERA). It couldn't get much worse than his performance in a 16-0 loss to Texas on Tuesday.

He matched a career high by allowing nine runs in 4 2-3 innings and is 1-1 with a 10.29 ERA in his last four starts.

"It's a shame to go out there and get your butt kicked on a night you feel so good. It doesn't happen every night when you feel great and tonight I did. I felt real good about everything in the bullpen, and I just got my (butt) kicked," Danks said.

He had a streak of seven consecutive victories against Seattle snapped in his only matchup last season, a 4-2 loss June 3. Danks gave up four runs in six innings after posting a 1.31 ERA in his prior eight meetings.

He's expected to pitch opposite Erasmo Ramirez (1-5, 4.35) in this one. The right-hander is being recalled from the minors to give ace Felix Hernandez an extra day of rest.

Ramirez began this season in Seattle's rotation before going 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA in five starts. He's fared better in his last three major league stints, compiling a 2.75 ERA but hasn't gotten enough support to win in any of his last seven starts.

Ramirez has a 1.33 ERA in his past five major league outings. He matched a career high with 10 strikeouts and gave up two runs in seven innings in the most recent game, a 3-1 loss to the New York Mets in a spot start July 22.

"He threw the ball good and hopefully he has that type of command again," manager Lloyd McClendon told MLB's official website. "If he does, we have a good chance of winning the game."

Ramirez hasn't earned a win in the majors since an 8-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in his season debut April 1.

Robinson Cano will try to help Ramirez by improving on his .462 career average against Danks. Cano, second in the AL with a .332 average, had a 10-game hit streak snapped Saturday.

Austin Jackson has more hits against Danks than any other pitcher, going 18 for 45 (.400) with three homers. He's 4 for 8 versus the left-hander this season.
