| | | TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
| | SEATTLE: SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano was just the start. The Seattle Mariners didn't stop with one major splash in trying to catch up with the best in the AL West.
Even so, there remain many questions about whether Seattle's additions as a whole can improve a team coming off a 71-win season.
The moves made by Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik were in hopes of improving the Mariners and solidifying his own future after a shaky offseason that started with Eric Wedge's decision not to return as manager.
Lloyd McClendon is getting his second shot as a major league manager nine years after he was last leading a club in Pittsburgh. Along with Cano, Seattle signed outfielder Corey Hart, closer Fernando Rodney and traded for designated hitter Logan Morrison.
Despite those moves, there remain concerns about the depth of Seattle's rotation beyond ace Felix Hernandez and whether players the Mariners have been waiting for to finally pop can establish themselves as reliable, everyday starters.
Yet the Mariners believe they will be competitive in one of baseball's toughest divisions.
''We're ready to win. That's what it's all about,'' Hernandez said. ''We're ready to win ballgames in Seattle. We're ready to be in the playoffs, we're ready to do that.''

| | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PA SPORTSTICKER AL PREVIEW (TEXAS-SEATTLE) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(DELETES reference to leapfrogging Oakland for first)
*Rangers-Mariners Preview* ==========================
Texas (14-8) at Seattle (8-13), 10:10 p.m. EDT
Adrian Beltre didn't think he needed a stint on the disabled list, so he figures to be eager to return.
Beltre is expected back in the Texas Rangers' lineup in Friday night's opener of a three-game road series against the Seattle Mariners.
Texas (14-8) placed the slugger on the 15-day DL on April 13 due to a strained left quadriceps muscle. He felt the move was not necessary, although the Rangers chose to be cautious with the 35-year-old, who last played April 8.
"I did not agree with the decision. It was out of my hands," Beltre said at the time. "Obviously the medical staff and the front office thought it was best. ... I have no say over that."
Beltre is returning at the right time since he owns a 13-game hitting streak against the Mariners. The third baseman is batting .423 in that run against the club he played for from 2005-09.
Kevin Kouzmanoff has been outstanding filling in for Beltre, batting .362 with 10 RBIs in 13 games. Kouzmanoff, however, was held out of Wednesday's 3-0 victory at Oakland with a sore back, and he was scheduled to be evaluated Friday at home by a specialist before the team made a roster move.
He was the hitting star with team highs of seven hits and five RBIs as Texas took three of four at home from Seattle (8-13) between April 14-17, the first series of 2014 between these division rivals. Robinson Cano led the Mariners with four RBIs in that set, but had just three hits in 17 at-bats.
Cano's lone homer this year is against Texas, and is one of his four extra-base hits. He has a career-worst .354 slugging percentage.
The second baseman's woes are one of several issues for the Mariners, who ended an eight-game slide with a dramatic 5-3 victory over Houston on Wednesday. Seattle was two outs from another defeat before Kyle Seager's three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.
Seager, batting .179, also had a two-run homer after not going deep in his previous 43 games.
"Nobody was really stressing," Seager said. "We've been all right. We know what we have here. Obviously nobody wants to lose, but we know what we have here and we haven't been panicking."
The Mariners' slide started with three defeats to the Rangers. That series also began an 8-1 run by Texas, which capped a three-game sweep Wednesday.
"We won three games here because we played very well," manager Ron Washington told the Rangers' official website. "We're pleased to get three games here, but we have to continue to play baseball."
Texas and Seattle will each start a left-hander coming off a poor outing who beat the other team earlier in the month.
Mariners rookie Roenis Elias (1-2, 3.22 ERA) allowed a season-high six runs over 5 2-3 innings of a 7-0 loss at Miami on Saturday. He earned his first big-league win in his previous outing, limiting the Rangers to one run in 6 2-3 innings of a 7-1 victory April 14.
Rangers starter Robbie Ross Jr. (1-1, 2.31) pitched 7 2-3 innings the next night to earn a 5-0 victory over the Mariners, but gave up seven runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 16-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
