Manager: Pete Mackanin (third season)
Who's new? LF Howie Kendrick, RF Michael Saunders, C Ryan Hanigan, OF Chris Coghlan, RHP Clay Buchholz, RHP Joaquin Benoit
Who's gone? C A.J. Ellis, 1B Ryan Howard, INF Andres Blanco, OF Peter Bourjos, RHP Charlie Morton, RHP David Hernandez
Projected lineup: 2B Cesar Hernandez (.294, 6 HR, 39 RBI, 17 SB), LF Howie Kendrick (.255, 8, 40, 10 with Dodgers), CF Odubel Herrera (.286, 15, 49, 25), 3B Maikel Franco (.255, 25, 88), RF Michael Saunders (.253, 24, 57 with Blue Jays), 1B Tommy Joseph (.257, 21, 47), C Cameron Rupp (.252, 16, 54), SS Freddy Galvis (.241, 3, 20, 17 SB)
Rotation: RH Jeremy Hellickson (11-14, 3.65 ERA), RH Aaron Nola (6-9, 4.78), RH Clay Buchholz (8-10, 4.78 with Red Sox), RH Vince Velasquez (8-6, 4.12), Jerad Eickhoff (11-14, 3.65)
Key relievers: Jeanmar Gomez (3-5, 4.85, 37/43 SV), Joaquin Benoit (2-0, 0.38 with Blue Jays), Hector Neris (4-4, 2.58), Pat Neshek (2-2, 3.06 with Astros), Edubray Ramos (1-3, 3.83)
Hot spots: Shortstop and closer. Philadelphia is waiting for the arrival of J.P. Crawford, the marquee name in the farm system. Crawford struggled in his first exposure to Triple-A last year, batting .250 with seven home runs in 123 games. In the meantime shortstop belongs to Galvis, who had an MLB-worst .274 on-base percentage last season. Crawford will get a chance once he's deemed ready. Gomez had a 19.13 ERA last September, possibly opening the door for Ramos, Neris or newcomer Benoit to seize the closer's job in spring training.
Outlook: On the long road back to respectability, the Phillies appear closer to the end than the beginning. Young starters Nola, Velasquez and Eickhoff showed flashes of brilliance last year. So did center fielder Herrera, who was rewarded with a five-year contract extension. He's the only player on the roster with a guaranteed contract beyond this year. That points to 2017 as a major transition year with prospects and veterans auditioning for jobs in 2018 and beyond, when the Phillies can be active in free agency. | | SAN FRANCISCO: 2016: 87-75, second place
Manager: Bruce Bochy (11th season)
Who's new? RHP Mark Melancon, C Nick Hundley, IF Jae-Gyun Hwang
Who's gone? OF Angel Pagan, OF Gregor Blanco, RHP Jake Peavy, RHP Santiago Casilla, RHP Sergio Romo, LHP Javier Lopez
Projected lineup: CF Denard Span (.266, 11 HR, 53 RBI, 12 SB), 1B Brandon Belt (.275, 17 , 82), C Buster Posey (.288, 14, 80), RF Hunter Pence (.289, 13, 57), SS Brandon Crawford (.275, 12, 84), 3B Eduardo Nunez (.288, 16, 67, 40 SBs with Giants and Twins), 2B Joe Panik (.239, 10, 62), LF Jarrett Parker (.236, 5, 14) or Mac Williamson (.223, 6, 15)
Rotation: LH Madison Bumgarner (15-9, 2.74 ERA), RH Johnny Cueto (18-5, 2.79), RH Jeff Samardzija (12-11, 3.81), LH Matt Moore (13-12, 4.08 with Giants and Rays), RH Matt Cain (4-8, 5.64)
Key relievers: RH Mark Melancon (2-2, 1.64, 47/51 SV with Nationals), RH Hunter Strickland (3-3, 3.10), RH Derek Law (4-2, 2.13), LH Steven Okert (0-0, 3.21) or Josh Osich (1-3, 4.71), RH Cory Gearrin (3-2, 4.28), RH George Kontos (3-2, 2.53)
Hot spot: Bullpen and left field. No team blew more saves last year than the Giants. The front office hopes it found the answer by signing three-time All-Star closer Melancon to a (then-record) four-year, $62 million deal, and by cutting ties with Romo and Casilla. They will need to replace Will Smith, a key lefty who tore his UCL in spring training. Veteran outfielder Pagan left after five seasons in San Francisco. Rather than fill his shoes via free agency or trade, the unproven tandem of Williamson and Parker is expected to share time in left.
Outlook: The Giants have an established core of position players, and an enviable 1-2 rotation punch in Bumgarner and Cueto. That's probably why the front office did little in the offseason besides overhaul the back end of the bullpen. Hwang, who hit 26 home runs and drove in 104 last year in Korea, is an intriguing addition to the bench. Mostly the Giants are counting on continuity. Former NL MVP Posey is coming off a below-average season by his standards, and sparkplug Pence missed nearly two months last year with a hamstring injury. Expecting both to bounce back isn't a stretch, and new closer Melancon is as good as they come. At full strength, this Giants team should be able to give the Dodgers a good run. |
| | Giants look to continue success against Phillies
SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants will seek to continue their run of improved play since the All-Star break when they host the Philadelphia Phillies on the second night of a four-game series Friday. The Giants ran their record in baseball's second half to 15-18 with a 5-4 victory over the Phillies in the series opener Thursday night. The .455 winning percentage since the All-Star Game is far superior to their .378 mark (34-56) in the first half, but still a far cry from .547 pace (87-75) that earned the Giants a wild-card playoff berth in the National League last season. "Yeah, I think it's a lot of progress," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday after the win. "We're not just trying to play .500, but we are playing a lot better." The Giants' improved record has come despite the efforts of Friday's starter, left-hander Matt Moore (3-12, 5.71 ERA), who hasn't won in six starts since the All-Star break. The Giants have lost five of those six games, including the last four. Moore is coming off one of his better outings of the season, having limited the Washington Nationals to two runs in seven innings in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday. The Giants went on to lose 6-2 in 11 innings. The second-year Giant has never beaten the Phillies, going 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA in three starts. Moore will take the mound with the majors' 20th-worst ERA among pitchers with 10 or more starts. One of the 19 with a worse ERA will be his pitching counterpart Friday, Phillies right-hander Zach Eflin (1-4, 5.76). Unlike Moore, who has been consistently subpar all season, Eflin's high ERA is mostly a result of three terrible outings in May in which he was crushed for 30 hits and 22 earned runs in 15 innings. He was demoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after the third of the troublesome starts on May 28, and he has pitched better since returning to the Phillies earlier this month. He has gone 1-1 in two starts, allowing just six earned runs in 12 1/3 innings. Eflin has never beaten the Giants, going 0-0 with a 4.91 ERA in two starts. The Phillies were inches away from a big inning that might have turned Thursday's game in their favor before Giants second baseman Kelby Tomlinson turned a potential RBI single by Tommy Joseph into a rally-killing double play with a diving stop in the fifth inning. Philadelphia scored on the play to cap a three-run uprising, but the Phillies never scored again in the one-run defeat. "We're in so many games," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin lamented afterward. "We're just falling short, but it's nice to see that we're in a lot of games. We don't get blown out a whole lot. We'll get there." The loss was the Phillies' fifth straight. Nine of their last 19 games have been decided by one run. |
