Manager: Andy Green (second season)
Who's new? RHP Jhoulys Chacin, RHP Trevor Cahill, RHP Jered Weaver
Who's gone? RHP Tyson Ross, RHP Brandon Morrow, IF/OF Alexi Amarista, OF Jon Jay, OF Oswaldo Arcia, IF/OF Adam Rosales
Projected lineup: LF Travis Jankowski (.245, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 30 SB), CF Manuel Margot (.243, 0, 3 in 10 games), 1B Wil Myers (.259, 28, 94, 28), 3B Yangervis Solarte (.286, 15, 71), RF Hunter Renfroe (.371, 4, 14 in 11 games), 2B Ryan Schmipf (.217, 20, 51), C Austin Hedges (.125, 0, 1 in eight games), SS Luis Sardinas (.287, 2, 13)
Rotation: RH Jered Weaver (12-12, 5.06 ERA with Angels), RH Jhoulys Chacin (6-8, 4.81 with Angels and Braves), LH Clayton Richard (3-3, 2.52), RH Trevor Cahill (4-4, 2.74 with Cubs), LH Christian Friedrich (5-12, 4.80) or RH Luis Perdomo (9-10, 5.71)
Key relievers: RH Brandon Maurer (0-5, 4.52, 13/19 SV), RH Carter Capps (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery), LH Ryan Buchter (3-0, 2.86), LH Brad Hand (4-4, 2.92), RH Kevin Quackenbush (7-7, 3.92), LH Keith Hessler (1-0, 3.38 with Diamondbacks and Padres), RH Jarred Cosart (0-3, 6.03 with Marlins and Padres)
Hot spots: Bullpen. San Diego's version of a position battle is Green fighting the temptation to bench a young player in the middle of a long slump. Since the Padres are playing for next year anyway, watching bullpen roles shake out might be someone's version of fun. Maurer, the incumbent closer, blew six of 19 save opportunities last year. Hand and Buchter are a pair of workhorse lefties who wouldn't look out of place on a contending team. The wild card is Capps, who is healthy after missing all of 2016 following Tommy John surgery. A year before, he struck out 58 batters in 31 innings with the Marlins.
Outlook: Look up 'rebuilding team' in the dictionary. With only eight active players on the books for more than $1 million ' excluding the retained salaries of Matt Kemp, Melvin Upton Jr. and several other former Padres ' San Diego will field MLB's lowest payroll. Theirs is the youngest roster in baseball too, with perhaps only two players who have turned 30 by Opening Day. Their best prospects are college-age kids in the low minors. So what's to like? Prospect watchers have been awaiting the arrival of Margot and Renfroe for years. The backup catcher, Christian Bethancourt, might pitch. Capps has an unusual delivery. The Padres also ran the bases aggressively under Green, and stolen bases are fun. How's that for a marketing slogan? | | SAN FRANCISCO: 2016: 87-75, second place
Manager: Bruce Bochy (11th season)
Who's new? RHP Mark Melancon, C Nick Hundley, IF Jae-Gyun Hwang
Who's gone? OF Angel Pagan, OF Gregor Blanco, RHP Jake Peavy, RHP Santiago Casilla, RHP Sergio Romo, LHP Javier Lopez
Projected lineup: CF Denard Span (.266, 11 HR, 53 RBI, 12 SB), 1B Brandon Belt (.275, 17 , 82), C Buster Posey (.288, 14, 80), RF Hunter Pence (.289, 13, 57), SS Brandon Crawford (.275, 12, 84), 3B Eduardo Nunez (.288, 16, 67, 40 SBs with Giants and Twins), 2B Joe Panik (.239, 10, 62), LF Jarrett Parker (.236, 5, 14) or Mac Williamson (.223, 6, 15)
Rotation: LH Madison Bumgarner (15-9, 2.74 ERA), RH Johnny Cueto (18-5, 2.79), RH Jeff Samardzija (12-11, 3.81), LH Matt Moore (13-12, 4.08 with Giants and Rays), RH Matt Cain (4-8, 5.64)
Key relievers: RH Mark Melancon (2-2, 1.64, 47/51 SV with Nationals), RH Hunter Strickland (3-3, 3.10), RH Derek Law (4-2, 2.13), LH Steven Okert (0-0, 3.21) or Josh Osich (1-3, 4.71), RH Cory Gearrin (3-2, 4.28), RH George Kontos (3-2, 2.53)
Hot spot: Bullpen and left field. No team blew more saves last year than the Giants. The front office hopes it found the answer by signing three-time All-Star closer Melancon to a (then-record) four-year, $62 million deal, and by cutting ties with Romo and Casilla. They will need to replace Will Smith, a key lefty who tore his UCL in spring training. Veteran outfielder Pagan left after five seasons in San Francisco. Rather than fill his shoes via free agency or trade, the unproven tandem of Williamson and Parker is expected to share time in left.
Outlook: The Giants have an established core of position players, and an enviable 1-2 rotation punch in Bumgarner and Cueto. That's probably why the front office did little in the offseason besides overhaul the back end of the bullpen. Hwang, who hit 26 home runs and drove in 104 last year in Korea, is an intriguing addition to the bench. Mostly the Giants are counting on continuity. Former NL MVP Posey is coming off a below-average season by his standards, and sparkplug Pence missed nearly two months last year with a hamstring injury. Expecting both to bounce back isn't a stretch, and new closer Melancon is as good as they come. At full strength, this Giants team should be able to give the Dodgers a good run. |
| | Giants host Padres in matchup of tired teams
SAN FRANCISCO -- Two tired ballclubs will complete a four-game series when the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants meet Sunday in the wake of back-to-back extra-inning affairs. About 13 hours after a 12-9 Padres victory in 11 innings ended, the Giants got a measure of payback Saturday afternoon when backup catcher Nick Hundley ended a 5-4, 12-inning win with a walk-off single. The win was only the Giants' fourth in their last 13 games against their Southern California rivals. A pair of rookie starters will vie in the series finale. Padres right-hander Dinelson Lamet (3-4, 6.40 ERA) will be pitching his third consecutive road game. The last two did not go well as he was roughed up at Cleveland and Colorado for 12 runs (10 earned) in eight innings. He lost both starts. He's only 1-3 with an 8.59 ERA in five road starts this season. "You've seen a lot of innings out of the bullpen over the last five days, about as many as I've ever seen," Padres manager Andy Green said after Saturday's loss. "We just need a good start from Lamet." The Giants will counter with their only starter with a winning record, left-hander Ty Blach (6-5, 4.36). He shut out the Padres on three hits over seven innings in a start in April. He did not get a decision in a 5-2 loss. Blach is 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA in two career starts against San Diego. The Giants have won seven of his last 11 starts. Giants manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged the wear and tear of 32 hard-fought innings in the series showed late in Saturday's game. "What a great comeback from a very rough night," Bochy said of the aftermath of Friday's marathon that ended almost exactly as the clock was hitting midnight. "I'll tell you this: Two tired teams out there." Both teams got help from unexpected sources in Saturday's game. Relievers Buddy Baumann of the Padres and Albert Suarez of the Giants, each called up from Triple-A earlier in the day, provided a break for their respective weary bullpens with impressive performances. Baumann struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect seventh inning. Suarez retired six straight guys in the seventh and eighth. Two key players should be well rested for Sunday's game. The Giants used Buster Posey only as a pinch hitter Saturday. He struck out with the potential winning run on first base in the ninth inning. Posey provided the game-winner in a similar situation earlier on the homestand with a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning of a 5-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Padres catcher Hector Sanchez got a similar type of "day off" Saturday, called upon only as a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth inning. He grounded out to first base with two outs and runners at first and third. Sanchez, a former Giant, had contributed three hits and two RBIs to Friday's victory. |
