Manager: Bud Black (first season)
Who's new? 1B Ian Desmond, IF Alexi Amarista, RHP Greg Holland, LHP Mike Dunn
Who's gone? Manager Walt Weiss, LHP Jorge De La Rosa, RHP Eddie Butler, LHP Boone Logan, C Nick Hundley, IF Daniel Descalso, OF Ryan Raburn
Projected lineup: CF Charlie Blackmon (.324, 29 HR, 82 RBI, 17 SB), 2B D.J. LeMahieu (.348, 11, 66, 11), 3B Nolan Arenado (.294, 41, 133), RF Carlos Gonzalez (.298, 25, 100), 1B Mark Reynolds (.282, 14, 53), LF David Dahl (.315, 7, 24) or Gerardo Parra (.253, 7, 39), SS Trevor Story (.272, 27, 72), C Tony Wolters (.259, 3, 30)
Rotation: RH Jon Gray (10-10, 4.61 ERA), RH Tyler Chatwood (12-9, 3.87), LH Tyler Anderson (5-6, 3.54), LH Kyle Freeland (6-3, 3.91 at Triple-A), RH German Marquez (1-1, 5.23)
Key relievers: Greg Holland (did not pitch in 2016), Adam Ottavino (1-3, 2.67, 7/12 SV), Mike Dunn (6-1, 3.40, 4/8 SV with Marlins), Jake McGee (2-3, 4.73, 15/19 SV), Jordan Lyles (4-5, 5.83), Chad Qualls (2-0, 5.23), Chris Rusin (3-5, 3.74), Carlos Estevez (3-7, 5.24, 11/18 SV)
Hot spots: Catcher and closer. Wolters was 23 years old and hadn't played a game above Double-A last year when the Rockies claimed him off waivers from Cleveland. Now he's the most experienced catcher on the Rockies' 40-man roster, having played 71 major league games. A pitch-framing specialist with rare agility behind the plate, Wolters must coax pitchers through Coors Field and its occasional malefactions. While Colorado's rotation is the best it's looked in years, the ninth inning could be an adventure. Seven pitchers recorded a save for the Rockies in 2016. Now, a man who hasn't thrown a competitive pitch since 2015 might be their best option. Holland, 31, saved 125 games for the Royals from 2013-15 before elbow surgery paused his career. Ottavino will close if Holland can't.
Outlook: The Rockies probably won't catch the Dodgers or Giants this season, but a .500 record or better would be a big boost for their rebuilding movement. Black skippered the Padres from 2007-15, then spent last year in the Angels' front office. His first task: keeping morale steady after a spate of injuries and illness struck the clubhouse. The Rockies' biggest offseason acquisition was veteran Desmond, but he'll miss the beginning of the season with a fractured hand. Pitcher Chad Bettis, who led the Rockies with 32 starts last year, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. Backup catcher Tom Murphy (hairline fracture in forearm) and outfielder Dahl (ribs) could also start the season on the DL. If they can get past these early hurdles, the Rockies will be competitive at worst and dangerous at best. | | SAN FRANCISCO: 2016: 87-75, second place
Manager: Bruce Bochy (11th season)
Who's new? RHP Mark Melancon, C Nick Hundley, IF Jae-Gyun Hwang
Who's gone? OF Angel Pagan, OF Gregor Blanco, RHP Jake Peavy, RHP Santiago Casilla, RHP Sergio Romo, LHP Javier Lopez
Projected lineup: CF Denard Span (.266, 11 HR, 53 RBI, 12 SB), 1B Brandon Belt (.275, 17 , 82), C Buster Posey (.288, 14, 80), RF Hunter Pence (.289, 13, 57), SS Brandon Crawford (.275, 12, 84), 3B Eduardo Nunez (.288, 16, 67, 40 SBs with Giants and Twins), 2B Joe Panik (.239, 10, 62), LF Jarrett Parker (.236, 5, 14) or Mac Williamson (.223, 6, 15)
Rotation: LH Madison Bumgarner (15-9, 2.74 ERA), RH Johnny Cueto (18-5, 2.79), RH Jeff Samardzija (12-11, 3.81), LH Matt Moore (13-12, 4.08 with Giants and Rays), RH Matt Cain (4-8, 5.64)
Key relievers: RH Mark Melancon (2-2, 1.64, 47/51 SV with Nationals), RH Hunter Strickland (3-3, 3.10), RH Derek Law (4-2, 2.13), LH Steven Okert (0-0, 3.21) or Josh Osich (1-3, 4.71), RH Cory Gearrin (3-2, 4.28), RH George Kontos (3-2, 2.53)
Hot spot: Bullpen and left field. No team blew more saves last year than the Giants. The front office hopes it found the answer by signing three-time All-Star closer Melancon to a (then-record) four-year, $62 million deal, and by cutting ties with Romo and Casilla. They will need to replace Will Smith, a key lefty who tore his UCL in spring training. Veteran outfielder Pagan left after five seasons in San Francisco. Rather than fill his shoes via free agency or trade, the unproven tandem of Williamson and Parker is expected to share time in left.
Outlook: The Giants have an established core of position players, and an enviable 1-2 rotation punch in Bumgarner and Cueto. That's probably why the front office did little in the offseason besides overhaul the back end of the bullpen. Hwang, who hit 26 home runs and drove in 104 last year in Korea, is an intriguing addition to the bench. Mostly the Giants are counting on continuity. Former NL MVP Posey is coming off a below-average season by his standards, and sparkplug Pence missed nearly two months last year with a hamstring injury. Expecting both to bounce back isn't a stretch, and new closer Melancon is as good as they come. At full strength, this Giants team should be able to give the Dodgers a good run. |
| | Giants, Rockies both aim to turn things around
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Colorado Rockies will attempt to follow in the successful footsteps of the New York Mets when they begin a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants on Monday night at AT&T Park. The Rockies are coming off a deflating, three-game sweep at the hands of the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, and Colorado blew a five-run lead in the Sunday finale. The Mets likewise were roughed up by the Dodgers, losing four straight, before heading to San Francisco on Friday. New York proceeded to turn things around dramatically, outscoring the floundering Giants 24-8 in a three-game sweep of their own. Now it's the Rockies' turn. They arrived in San Francisco on Sunday night in arguably worse shape than the Mets, even though Colorado's demolition in Los Angeles lasted one game fewer. That was how bad their wild-pitch-infested Sunday loss was. Colorado gave up five runs on four wild pitches in the seventh and eighth innings. "Games like this happen. They're painful when you're on this end of it," Rockies manager Bud Black said. "As ugly as it got in the end, this is good for us to see where we are and how we can bounce back, especially on the mound." The Rockies couldn't be in a better place to rebound. They have beaten the Giants nine straight times and 10 of 11 this season, including three of four in an earlier visit to San Francisco. Colorado swept a four-game home series from the Giants earlier this month. Two of the wins were of the walk-off variety. Right-hander German Marquez (5-3, 3.92 ERA) will seek to extend an impressive eight-game stretch when he starts for the Rockies. He did not face the Giants in the teams' most recent series. Acquired last year from the Tampa Bay Rays in the Corey Dickerson trade, Marquez has allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his past eight games, winning five times during that stretch. He is coming off a six-inning, four-hit, one-run performance in a no-decision last Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Marquez has pitched once previously in San Francisco, and it did not go well. In his only career appearance against the Giants, he was bombed for 12 hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings in a 12-3 loss last September. The Giants have won just once since leaving Denver eight days ago. They dropped three of four in Atlanta before heading home to face the Mets. Jeff Samardzija (2-9, 4.74 ERA) will attempt to be the Giants' skid-stopper Monday. He pitched the second of San Francisco's four defeats in Colorado on the last trip, taking the loss in a 10-8 defeat. The eight-run, 11-hit outing made him 0-3 against the Rockies this season. His ERA is 9.33 in those games. Samardzija is 3-5 with a 3.91 ERA in 14 career games, including 11 starts, against the Rockies. The Giants have lost 12 of their last 13 games, their worst 13-game stretch since also going 1-12 bridging August and September of 1992. "These are tough times. No getting around it," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday after San Francisco's 8-2 loss to the Mets. "I've been around a long time. This is as tough as I've ever been around. The baseball gods are really testing this group. Enough is enough." |
