| |  | MILWAUKEE: MILWAUKEE (AP) - Two pitches into his spring training return, the Brewers' most important player tried to prove his point.
Home run, Ryan Braun.
Now let's see how he fares when the games count.
Bolstered by the return of Braun from a 65-game doping suspension and the signing of free-agent starter Matt Garza, Milwaukee enters the 2014 season hoping it has the pieces to contend again in the competitive NL Central.
Braun has vowed to return to his 2011 MVP form.
''I think the expectation is to have an opportunity to compete to get back to the playoffs. That's our goal, I think it's realistic,'' Braun said during spring training in Phoenix.
Staying healthy would help, too. Besides Braun's suspension, injuries sapped much of the Brewers' power last year with projected 3-4-5 hitters Braun, Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart each missing various lengths of time. Hart never played because of a knee injury.
Hart is gone, but Braun and Ramirez are back and bolstered by new team cornerstones who emerged last season in Carlos Gomez, Jean Segura and Jonathan Lucroy.
| | SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''

In the midst of a crucial nine-game road swing, the Milwaukee Brewers' first stop didn't exactly go as planned.
The slumping Brewers try to get back on track in Friday night's series opener against the San Francisco Giants, who are on the verge of their longest winning streak in nearly three months.
NL Central-leading Milwaukee (73-60) has dropped five of seven after suffering back-to-back losses to San Diego. The Brewers took a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday but Francisco Rodriguez blew the save in a 3-2, 10-inning defeat.
"That's a tough one, I'm not going to lie," Rodriguez told MLB's official website. "I'm probably not going to be able to close my eyes tonight just thinking about it. But we still have a tough series coming up. We have to be sure to be ready Friday."
Milwaukee is 1 1/2 games ahead of St. Louis and four in front of Pittsburgh for the division lead.
"We're in the driver's seat right now," Wednesday's starter Yovani Gallardo said. "If we go out there and take care of the things we have to do, everything else is going to fall into place."
While San Francisco (71-62) is 4 1/2 games behind Los Angeles in the West, it occupies the league's second wild-card spot. The Giants are seeking a fourth consecutive victory for the first time since a five-game run June 4-8.
Gregor Blanco hit a two-run homer in Thursday's 4-1 victory over Colorado and Yusmeiro Petit set a major league record by retiring his 46th consecutive batter - a streak that covered eight games.
San Francisco will try to keep building against Wily Peralta (15-8, 3.56 ERA), who had posted a 1.59 ERA in winning six of seven starts before getting hit hard in Saturday's 10-2 loss to Pittsburgh. The right-hander was tagged for eight runs - seven earned - and served up a career-worst three homers over five innings.
Peralta is one win behind Clayton Kershaw for the most in the baseball. He has won his last two starts against the Giants behind a 0.69 ERA after giving up one unearned run and striking out a career-high nine over 6 2-3 innings in a 3-1 victory Aug. 7.
San Francisco's Ryan Vogelsong (7-9, 3.78) gave up three runs and a season high-tying four walks over 5 1-3 innings in Sunday's 14-6 loss at Washington. Despite that showing, the right-hander is 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA in five starts this month.
However, Vogelsong has gone 0-5 with a 4.15 ERA over a seven-start stretch at AT&T Park while receiving a combined four runs of support, including none in his last five. His last home win came 2-1 against Minnesota back on May 24.
Vogelsong threw six innings of one-run ball to win 7-4 at Milwaukee on Aug. 6, improving to 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his last three starts in the series. Jonathan Lucroy and Ryan Braun are a combined 0 for 10 in their matchups since 2012.
Milwaukee took two of three from San Francisco earlier this month, improving to 8-3 in the series dating to May 2012.
"We played a good series against them," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "We know we're always going to have a tough time ... but if we play our type of game, we feel like we can win."
San Francisco's Buster Posey is batting .429 with five homers and 10 RBIs over his last eight games. However, he's 6 for 27 with one RBI in eight games against Milwaukee since the start of last year.
