| | | ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss. A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery. Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool. Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth. ''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.'' Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training. ''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''
| | SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''

*Diamondbacks-Giants Preview* =============================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Arizona (2-7) at San Francisco (5-2), 10:15 p.m. EDT
The San Francisco Giants can thank the Arizona Diamondbacks for their strong start.
Coming off a successful home opener, the Giants try for a fourth consecutive victory over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.
San Francisco (6-2) took three of four at Arizona to open its season before winning two of three at Dodger Stadium. The Giants then got a two-run homer from Brandon Belt and a solid eight innings from Tim Hudson in Tuesday's 7-3 win over the Diamondbacks (2-8).
The Giants have scored 30 runs and recorded 18 extra-base hits, including seven home runs, in the five games versus Arizona.
Four of Belt's five home runs and all but two of his nine RBIs have come against the Diamondbacks. Teammate Angel Pagan added two more hits Tuesday to raise his average to .441 overall and .455 (10 for 22) versus Arizona this year.
The Diamondbacks went 1 for 5 with runners in scoring position and are 16 for 85 (.188) on the season.
"We had our chances," manager Kirk Gibson said. "We weren't able to hold them down. We weren't able to get the big two-out hits like they did."
Tim Lincecum (0-0, 6.00 ERA) makes his second straight start against Arizona after yielding two-run homers to Paul Goldschmidt and Mark Trumbo in Thursday's 8-5 win. The right-hander struck out seven and walked none in six innings.
Goldschmidt, batting .385 overall and .381 (8 for 21) against the Giants this season, is 12 for 23 with six home runs versus Lincecum.
"I'm going to start throwing underhand to him or something," Lincecum told the Giants' official website. "It's a game of adjustments. He's constantly making them against me, so I've got to do the same thing against him. That will be for the next go-around."
Lincecum has received four runs of support while going 0-4 with a 4.35 ERA in his last five home starts against the Diamondbacks. He'll again oppose veteran right-hander Bronson Arroyo (0-0, 4.15).
Though back problems plagued Arroyo during spring training, he was able to open the season and allowed two runs and five hits in 4 1-3 innings Thursday in his Arizona debut.
"I felt good, as good as I could have asked for," Arroyo told the Diamondbacks' official website. "It's a long season, that's what it is. You try to chew up as many (innings) as you can. If you consistently do that, then you've done your job. And if you get knocked out like I did before you can even finish five, then you haven't."
After going 0-4 with a 4.11 ERA in his first six starts at San Francisco, Arroyo put together a one-hit, seven-inning performance in a 9-0 victory for Cincinnati in Game 2 of the 2012 NL division series. Then last season, he tossed a seven-hitter and struck out six without a walk in an 11-0 win there.
Belt, the first Giant since Jose Cruz Jr. in 2003 to hit five home runs in the first eight games, is 5 for 9 with two homers against Arroyo in the regular season.
